No sound when rig turned on last nght. Then it worked.
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that. The amp is only about 7 moths old and is kept in the house so i dont think it could be that. I will put a jack plug in them and see if there is an issue there. Good idea. Come ot think of it, this happened a couple of gigs ago as well. That time i put it down to the PSU lead from my 1 Spot causing this. Im now thinking its wasnt that at all and the only reason things started working was because of the time i took to fault find. -
I got to the gig last night and plugged all my gear in. That being a passive Fender, GK800 head, Line6 transmitter/receiver, Darkglass VMT and Vanderkley cab. Amp came on, all the right lights came on (its supposed to show if there are any issues) but no sound. Receiver was indicating a signal from the bass. Un plugged everything and just used a lead to the head. Still nothing. There was a slight hiss from the tweeter but nothing else. Changed the speaker lead, no difference. After about 15mins it all came back to life and worked perfectly the rest of the night. Other than checking inside the cab i changed as much as i could and none made a difference. If it was a cable inside the cab i would have expected intermittent cut outs but i had no issues at all. Anyone have any ideas what i an check?

Now gone to a very good home :-)

Vanderkley or barefaced cabs - which is the best ?
dave_bass5 replied to Black Coffee's topic in Amps and Cabs
To be honest i felt its was more the BF cabs not being to my taste rather than the 115MN6 being better. I actually found the rehearsal studios old 4x10 to be better than my BB2, to my ears. Ive posted about this in another thread so wont go on here. Needless to say, my biggest issue was with the low end on both my BB2 and Retro 210. I wouldn't say the 115MN6 is anything special though, and the 6" driver is pretty useless for me. It sounds like a standard tweeter that only adds very top end string noise, but the light weight, perfect size and tone just seems to make it the right cab for me. -
Vanderkley or barefaced cabs - which is the best ?
dave_bass5 replied to Black Coffee's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had a couple fo BF cabs last year and in to this year. They are great cabs but i felt they didn't do it for me. I ended up with a Vanderkley 115MN6 and couldn't be happier. For my style of playing, and doing general covers, the 115MN6 seems to fill out the mix much better, without the extended lows i had struggled with when i had my BB2. Ive been back to the same venues i gigged the BB2 in and can confirm (to my ears) the 1x15 sounded more even and thicker. Of course sounding thicker might mean coloured, but if so that worked for me. I found the upper notes quite weak with my BF cabs, but not so with the 115MN6. They have more punch and presence. I loved the BF cabs at first, it was only after a few gigs that i noticed they werent working for me. They do produce a lovely tone though. Of course thats all subjective but thats my experience. -
Cheers. The photos make the fronts look as bit more tatty than they do in real life, but yes a lick of paint is all they need to look more presentable. We've done 100's of gigs with these, and never had an issue with volume.
-
Cheers. It would be a real shame if i had to throw them but i expect i will as i cant store them at work any more, and have just brought some smaller ones that i can keep at home. If i could drive id happily drop them off to soemone in the London area, but i dont.

These are fully working, with no issues other than they look old. The drivers were replaced a few years ago, but the boxes are about 20 years old. I think we got them recovered a few years ago as well. Not sure if i can do this but here is a link to my for sale thread. Basically these need to be out the door by 12th Nov if possible. Free of course. http://basschat.co.u...r/#entry3163343
I always talk to them on the phone. Simple and effective. Always puts any doubts to rest.
That doesnt work for me, although im happy It works for you. Anyone can say anything on the phone. Scammers are very clever these days and can say all the right things. Even face to face isnt an indication for what someone plans to do. Having a decent post history gives more away than a phone call IME.
I do agree with you. It was just a thought. I just think it would be nice tho if the "sellers" of no or low post count joined in the forum a bit more. Especially as lots have nice gear or seem to have knowledge on something it would only enrich the forum having more people post. Also having a higher post count does put people more at ease about buying than a low or no post count. But as you said it of course isn't an honesty counter so to say.
Totally agree, and this is how i view items i want to buy. I personally prefer to know who im giving money to, and to do that i will look at their posts. Those adds that say very little about the seller or the item dont bother even putting a location down will not interest me, that makes it too much lies eBay. I dont think we need any rules, we can all make our own choices, but as this is supposed to be a community i would only deal with soemone who takes part in conversation, or can at least string more than one basic senescent together.

Which part of your setup bass, amp, cab etc do you prioritize
dave_bass5 replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
These days its the cab. Ive not been through loads in my lifetime, but recently i realised they have the biggest impact on the final tone. Changing cabs while keeping the bass and amp consistent has shown me this to be true in my case. I should add im not too fussy about what bass i use so although it needs to have a comfortable neck thats it. -
My vote goes to the TC Electronics Corona Chorus as mentioned by the OP. Not only is this the best ive personally used, its fully programmable. To my ears its tweak-able enough to get most Chorus type tones, although im not suggestion it sounds exactly like any of the above in isolation. http://www.tcelectronic.com/corona-chorus/toneprints/

Thomanns the box PA 502 A. Anyone using these for live work?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
I dunno - having heard some Thomann boxes, I would have to say that imho, they aren't in the same league as the DBs! Anyway, it's all pointless musing about it - glad that you have ended up what you needed!
I expect you are right, although i also think the db's are a bit more than we need. Still, these are keepers so job done. I cant really say about putting keys and guitar through them. Id say yes to putting a bit ogf guitar through them but not sure about a full keyboard rig. They seem like they would handle it but not sure how well the vocals would be heard. They do seem very solid though, and the low end seems tight and almost sub like with recorded music, and that was running them in the flat mode at a very low volume. They also have a music mode that i haven't tried yet. -

Yup, definitely the right choice, although i do feel the Thomanns ones would also have been ok sound wise. Still, the weight saving is worth the extra cost. I had thought about the studio we use, as they also have a pair of the same speakers. Trouble is getting them there. -

All good, very good in fact. The band all thought they sounded better than then the old ones, other than the singer. She said they sounded a bit thinner. She had a point but as i pointed out, we need to start using thre EQ differently, and she was used to the more coloured tone. It certainly sounded better to me when I went out front. Its hard to really judge with just vocals going through We didn't put the kick drum through it, we didn't have time, but i have a feeling its going to sound better than the old speakers. When we played music during the break we really noticed how punchy the low end is, and at a very low volume. Much more hifi than th sold ones. I did notice the desk needs adjusting more. The output levels were low on the main meter, as we are so used to having to keep everything low to avoid blowing the old speakers, so the channel levels need brining up more. I didn't notice this until we started playing so ill do that next time. There was still plenty of volume though. The biggest improvement was the load in. I took both in at once, and could put them on the stands without any help. We all said we should have done this years ago. I did point out that only me and the singer put our hands in our pockets to do this, and i had been trying to get the band as a whole to upgrade but no one want to back then (this was the old line up though). We also had much more space in the car, and getting home after the gig and only making one trip up to our flat was as good as it gets. I cant imagine doing that with the old ones. So yeah, very happy. I have posted an ad on here for the old speakers already. It seems a shame to just dump them as they are working 100% but i might have to. -

dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
Yep, that was a very good call on these. Glad i asked first. It seems we can now get everything (PA and my gear) in the car plus our son who comes to most of them. Im still going to hate carrying them up to the flat after the gig but id hate to think how much effort the old speakers would have needed. Hopefully we will get to sound check to night so i can get to tweak the EQ a bit on the desk, but as its just vocals and maybe kick drum going through them im sure mostly flat will work as a starting point. Not sure if i should turn them right up and be careful with the desk, or maybe half way and see how it goes. Depends on the room i suppose. Its just a social club so we wont need silly levels. They definitely sound very different from my Ashdown, but i much prefer this new tone, seems a lot clearer at low volume. I dont think it will ever come to me needing to use one at a gig though. Heading off soon so ill post back tomorrow. Cheers again. -
Long story short, i have to get rid of my bands PA speakers and monitors asap. Ive bene keeping these at work and cant any more, so ive brought some new, smaller an lighter powered speakers tha ti can keep at home. These have been used almost every weekend for the past 13 years, up until last weekend. They are fully usable, although the monitor does distort a bit at certain freq's at high volume. These Peavey cabs are about 20 years old, and we replaced both 15" drivers a few years ago, so they arent Black Widow as stated on the cabs, but are equivalent, . They look tatty, and they are, but they are fully working with no audio issues. The monitors were brought off here a few years ago, and again, they are fully working, but do have this annoying issue with a certain freq causing issues at some gigs. It seems to be a "D" for some reason. We havent had it cause problems at gigs, as its only the band that can hear it, and we dont hear it at every gig. The Main cabs are Peavey Hisys, and the Monitor is a Thomanns Box MA120Mkii https://www.thomann....ma120_mk_ii.htm, plus 250watt extension cab. The asking price of £140 is what id like, but as im quite desperate ill take ONO. Pick up only form Holborn, central London. Ill also include our speakon to speakon leads.

Cheers. Unfortunately ill be in the wrong place to enjoy them lol. Ill do a gig update on sunday. I use a radio system so will get to hear them at sound check. I think our singer has just brought a new monitor as well so it will be an interesting gig. One other great benefit of this type of speaker is i can use it as my home practice rig without taking up any extra room in the flat. I can now get rid of my old Ashdown combo that i keep around for very occasional home use. -

Thanks Mike. I actually got the db's recommended earlier. Cheapest i could find them was £321 each, inc delivery from Digital Village. Cheaper than Thomanns. Like you say, at the moment they aren't as cheap as they have been in the past. Ive brought a lot of gear from Thomanns over the years, and cant fault them at all, but this time DV won on cost, plus i got next day delivery. First gig with them on Sat. Should be interesting. So far i love how light they are. Any of us can now carry both speakers at the same time, as opposed to our old ones needing quite a bit of effort to carry each one. With just a few mis of testing i can tell the new speakers dont have the heft and fullness our old Peavey's have, but thats not to say it's a bad thing. The EQ on our desk seems to be more responsive with the db's. I guess its a more open sound, and certainly the upper mid range is clearer. Now i just need to get rid of the old stuff and start enjoying the extra space in the living room again. -

I believe ive just seen a V7 on Jools Holland. It looked (to my old eyes) like the bass player with the Temptations was using one. Could be wrong through as i dont really know my basses and haven't seen mine for a good few months.
