From what you've said in your first post you've seen this band before & liked the songs - surely if they were that bad it would have been evident then?
My thoughts exactly. What on earth is the problem other than the band work a different way? Ok, the drummer thing is another matter altogether but having seen the band and wished to be part of it I can't fathom this thread at all.

And different voicing? I did a gig about 10 years ago when I had a GK RB1001-II going through my 212 cab. I got this amp as it was rated higher than my MB SA450. I can honestly say I never got the heft or girth (giggady, and so fullness from that head compared to my MB head, and I swapped the head over after the first set. I wasn't any louder as far as I could tell, but the bass had a lot more presence in the mix. The GK head had a tone I found thin and raspy.

SOLD - 1984 Ibanez Roadstar II SALE ONLY no trades no exchanges
dave_bass5 replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Basses For Sale
This is an amazing bass. As per the very unflattering shot above I did indeed have this for a while. It was a hard decision to give it back. At the above gig Fran brought this and his Dingwall ABZ along for me to play. It was a lovely experience but for some reason when I strapped the Ibby on i found this bass to be an even better playing experience. The tone is very solid, probably the best sounding P bass I've ever played, and that's without the J pup on. It produced a tone that didn't have any mud or darkness (compared to the P bass I had brought along), and almost growled like a Jazz bass at times. I didn't use thre bridge pup much but when dialled in it sounded spot on for a PJ, with no loss of definition like my old PJ. I would have brought this had its not been for my Fender coming along at the same time, but even now I'd say the Ibby sounds a bit more solid. GLWTS Fran.
Just my own woes here. Had a band practice on Sunday. Had my Markbass cranked. Full gain and master but had to roll off the gain because it was clipping. 300W through my 8Ohm Barefaced Super Compact. The cab could handle a lot more and I needed the extra volume. Can't return the amp now so will be out a bit of money if I do upgrade :-( Only had it a month so still under warranty. Hopefully someone will take it at near fill price. Fingers crossed.
One thing ive found is that in a rehearsal space the acoustics can play tricks on you. I dont know how large the room is or where you were standing, but IME its easy to stand too close and feel you need to turn up because you are off axis. Quite often you may be very loud at a further distance. This was demonstrated to me a few weeks ago when we were rehearsing. I had what i thought was a good volume, although i did think we were too loud oval as the settings on my amp were the same as i would use at a gig. Anyway, i went off to have a pee and my son picked the bass up. When i got back the band were playing but all i could hear when i walked in was the bass. As i walked across the room the bass got quieter, until i was back at the usual point and it sounded just right. Probably not relevant to this thread on a technical level as i dont have any figures to post, but thought id post anyway.
My current rig is a Genz Benz Shuttle 12.0 going into a Barefaced Big baby and I recently have potentially been converted. I played a festival and the backline rig was an EBS head of some sort (Fafner of HD360) going into an EBS 4x10 and oh my, it was MIGHTY. I'm potentially converted. The sort of sound I aim for is something that bulks out the rhythm section of the band, think of a more pop-like Rocco, in which, the sound may not be amazing on it's own but really adds life to the band in the mix. I play a Musicman Bongo 5HH. What do you reckon, guys and gals? Anyone ever had a conversion experience like this or is this an audible equivalent of the grass always being greener on the other side?
I had a BB2 for a while, loved it at first but the more i used it, and more to the point, the more i used the studio cabs at our rehearsal place, the more i felt the BB2 was lacking quite a fry things i wanted, and believed i would get from the BB2. On the odd occasion i wouldnt have my Bb2 with me i would use whatever was in the room. Always a 4x10 and these cabs had a huge punch and volume compared to the BB2. I never had any issues with not being heard at gigs with the BB2, but it didnt have anywhere near the kick in the chest these 4x10's and my Vanderklay has. this was not what i expected after reading the website. The 1x15 cab i have now fills things out like the BB2 never did. Its not a clear when played on its own, but due to it being more coloured it seems to have more of a heft to it.

I agree about the VMT, but not the VMTD. Having owned both I can't find a bad word to say about the VMTD, but I do need to be careful with my VMT.
-
I just noticed Bass Direct are taking pre orders for this, but at £300 i think ill find a second hand VMTD.

Thought it was just a bit more boring than watching paint dry. I always assumed they had more than one song, not just one song that lasts 45mins.
You have to be reasonable with your expectations.. I very much doubt it would underpin a band in any sense that you'd be satisfied with....bar a very quiet one. Volume isn't the consideration in that context... it is about how the bass is heard. I always like to 102 combo but you needed to consider where it could do a job..
I couldn't agree more. Just having volume as such is not always enough. Having the correct tone at the required volume is not easy with small cabs. I very much doubt these small cabs can blow away any band if the guitarist and drummer decided to up their volume.

Ive got a Gotoh 201 on all my 4 string basses. They might not make much difference to the tone (and they might) but they do make my basses just a bit nicer in some way. Never really liked the BA2 bridge. I definitely noticed an increase in high's with that (ive had 2) bridge.
Not been on here for years so apologies if this has already been discussed but what is the general view of the weight of these? I recently bought a Fretless 5 (swamp ash). Great tone and playability but blimey its heavy! Not an issue as I'll only be using on the odd track / session but I was thinking of pulling the trigger on a fretted 5 and that will get more use. Has anyone else had issues with the weight of these or is mine a one off? Also, will an Alder one likely to be lighter than swamp ash?
Well mine is 10.1lbs. My Fender is 7.8lbs. Although i dont mind the weight at a gig, i find the biggest pain is actually carrying it to the gig. -
Not seen it but saw a song from it today at the West end Love show in Traffic Square. Seemed ok. I didn't know this had been created. Might go and see it at some point. Not a huge fan but I do like their sound.
Thanks! We'll start shipping these early next month! This one's a tad clearer and tighter in the low end. Regards, Doug.
Exactly what i needed to hear Doug. Cant wait.
-
I did ask Doug about the Era knob on FB - he reckons that the EQ on V2 could do it all anyway. But I did like the 1 knob tweakability. I have a V1 and it's not going anywhere. It's too useful.
Yes, Doug told me the same thing, and i agree, having just one knob to change the tones is a lot quicker than using 4.

I cant see the point of spending a load of money on a bass that you are worried about taking out. I appreciate the theme of the thread, but if you have to spend a lot on a bass to be happy, but are happy to play a cheap bass, then maybe you dont need the expensive one lol.
We do this; the guitarist approximates the part with a slide. Works pretty well.
Yep, thats how we used to do it as well. One of my fav songs to play.
-
Yeah, I agree with all that, for me the Era knob was the best thing on the VMT/D. I sold my VMTD last year and spent the rest of the year with the VTBass Di and Deluxe. Sort of got tired of it so back in April I got a VMT. I really liked it but thought I could do with more EQ. I sold it on here and got the VMTD v2. Never really got on with it so I sent it back. It sounded good but I didn't need all the switch fucntions, and missed the ease of the one knob adjustments. I now have my VMT back and loving it, but again, I feel I need a bit more EQ. The VMT is quite dark, even with the era knob right up. Now I expect I'll get the VMTD Ultra. I like the tone without the drive features engaged, but I can defiantly do with the option to turn the drive on and off, while still keeping the Vintage tone. That cover the missing Era knob convenience.
-
Yeah, even bypassed the tone was quite dirty.
-
Much more than the VMT and the first VMTD certainly, the second version of the VMTD seemed to go further than the first two though so i suppose the Ultra is just the natural evolution. Not sure if the Vintage has lost its way though. I loved the first VMTD, didnt get on with the second version as for me the Era knob was the selling point.
-
Seeing as im definitely getting one i thought id post this here. Im sure there will be loads of talk about it over the coming months. I was about to start using my VTBass DI as an always on and my VMT for the dirtier tones. Now it looks like i can do it all with one DG box. Im not overly keen on the tones in the video, but i do love the DG Vintage pedals for their warming aspect. http://youtu.be/A7E4045C4JI

Am I the only one who doesn't get on with the sadowsky on board preamp
dave_bass5 replied to mingsta's topic in Bass Guitars
Never played a Sadowsky but i did have the outboard preamp. After reading so many good things about it i felt really let down. It just didn't seem to make the magic happen like people had been posting about. -
Replacement pick ups for Squier classic vibe Jazz
dave_bass5 replied to pnefc42's topic in Bass Guitars
I found the stock pups a bit lacking in something, probably bite and growl IIR (it was a long time ago). I replaced them with a set of Wizard 74's and never looked back. They seemed to give the bass a bit more mid punch and clarity, without sounding hot and gritty. Had the bass about 7 years now and cant really fault it, although i dont use it these days.
