Yeah, the low end is very powerful. Ive got the active tone level set just lower than the passive level. This keeps the overall output level pretty consistent when switching between the two modes, as long as im not being silly with the EQ boost.

Cheers. i had some of those air damped Proel stands years ago. Very nice stands. I do feel the extra cost for air dampening isnt something i want to pay for, as we get by without it already. We used to have a pair off Quicklok stands, and yes, they were great. In fact I couldn't faultt them at the time, but they did fall apart after a few years. This was more than likely down to bad treatment from the guy who used to take them though. I think they are just a bit out of my price range though. I'm having to buy these off my own back (the band think the existing ones are good for another few years) so £50-ish is really the top end of my budget. EDIT: Meant to say I'm talking about the SP180's as being the ones we had and the ones that are just out of my budget.

Is the above possible? Looking to replace some old Studio spares stands that have all but fallen apart. Not looking to spend much, hopefully under £50 the pair. They only need ot support some Peavy Hi Sys 1x 15 passive speakers. Ive looked on Amazon and Thomanns, seen loads, but wanted to get some personal recommendations if possible. Cheers.

I've had two Lakland Duck Dunn basses. The first had a Fralin and the seocond had a Hanson pup. Although they were a couple of years apart to my ears the Hanson sounded a bit harsh and growly compared to how I remembered the first bass. I swapped the Hanson out and put a Fralin in and felt much better about it. Saying that I put the same Fralin in a Squier P bass and never really felt it made much difference.

I tend to post more if im looking to buy something, or have just brought something. This si a great place to do research and discuss items etc. I feel a lot fo the threads are irrelevant to me these days. The biggest reason for not coming on here as much though is any thread i have subscribed to i can read in the email notifications, so i dont need to come here to see whats going on. I thought we were only supposed to get one email alert per thread until we came here and read it, but its never worked like that for me.

Cool. The 55-02 is going to be a lot more versatile. I started out on a 55-01 and loved it, at the time. I suppose if there was anything I didn't like it was the tone. At first I did, but after a while I felt it to be a bit bland. I did upgrade the pre amp but that didn't really make much difference. Had it for a couple of years though and giged it constantly so it must have had something going for it. I think the 55-02 is going to be sweet. I think one day I'll have one. Agree about the staked knobs. not very elegant and I did worry about knocking them when I first got my Sire. I don't worry about them now though, but I do think they look a bit cheap. Good luck with it.

Although i do have a proper stand, these days im more likely to use one of these

I doubt you will be disappointed, but at least Thomanns have a fantastic returns policy if you don't want to keep it. Also there is the new M7 5 string due out soon. That's not a Jazz but it seems to have the same pre amp set up.

[/quote] Just remember that it's only my view, but it is based on actually gigging with it for a good few months. I don't think you can wrong with the Sire for what you want it for, One other thing worth mentioning is the neck radius. I love Lakland necks as they are nice and reasonablely flat. The Sire is not like this at all, although it's still a very comfy neck to play. Might not make a difference but worth pointing out if you have played a Lakland 5 string and loved the neck.

I would say yes, it beats the Squier in every way. Saying that, if you don't want or need an active bass then maybe it's not the best choice. Having all those knobs and using the bass in passive mode 100% of the time doesn't feel right to me. It's also quite a heavy bass, although that's not a problem for a lot of us. It's also a bit longer than a standard Fender/Squire, so you may need a new case or gig bag. My V7 would only fit in one of my 4 gig bags when I got it. Luckily Sire gave me two of their gig bags :-) In all other respects I think it's an amazing bass. The pre amp along makes it fairly unique at this price point. You don't get many 18volt pre amps at this low price point, or even double this price point. Not sure if it's needed but its nice to have I suppose. The V7 isn't deadly silent with only one pup on. At least, mine isn't. In fact even in passive mode I hear more noise than my Squier CV Jazz. It's not a big deal, and this is with headphones on so more noticeable, but if it matters maybe the Squier is quieter. I've actually stopped using mine at the moment. I put new strings no all my basses a few weeks ago. All the same XL's. I love these strings but I find the V7 to be quite a warm, deep and round sounding bass. As far as traditional Jazz tones go my Squier CV Jazz (with Wizard 74's) has more growl and bite, and seems to cut through with a bit more clarity than the V7. The CV has less low end but enough to do the job. I'm not really a fan of active basses, although the V7 has an amazing range of tones. I do like the V7 tone, and will definitely use it again, but for now I don't need 5 strings.

Must admit I hardly use the pan pot or bridge pup on my jazz basses. Saying that I would expect them to work as they should, no matter how much the bass costs. If this were me I would tell Thomanns I want a replacement, but not until they check its be new one first. They did this for me a few years ago when I had issues with a bass from them. It might be that they tell you to hang on to the bass until they have more stock. In the mean time Sire might have been in touch with more help. It does sound like one of the pups might be reversed, and I'd be inclined to investigate sorting that out myself.

My band are doing a free gig i March. Its a small pub in East Finchley. Its not a party or special night, and we asked for the gig. This will be the first non paying gig ive done in about 20+ years. Why are we doing it? Because it looks like fun (half my band also play there occasionally, for free). It will be a nice relaxed break from the functions and socail clubs, and im looking forward to playing Mustang Sally to an appreciative, mainly female crowd. We will take all our gear, and give them the same performence as if we were getting paid. We might get a gig or two out of it but thats not really the reason for doing it. I suppose the point of this post is just to say not everyone does it for the money, or thinks entertaining people for less than the going rate should be ruled out.

Seriously have a look at the Sire V7 then. I know its not a Lakland, and it is active, but the quality is up there with the Lakland's, yet the price is much lower.

The DJ5 was a slightly higher spec Jazz bass, i think thats why it sells for a higher price secondhand. Ive had a 55-01 (my first ever Lakland) and a DJ5, but the JO5 i played was definitely my fav. In fact it was playing one of those that got me selling my Fender P5. The necks on Laklands are fantastic IME, very smooth and fast. I guess part of that is the flat radius and the small frets. Now that i have a Sire my GAS for a Lakland has gone, although i too would prefer a plain passive bass with just 3 knobs. The Sire is very close to a 5 string Lakland though, at a fraction of the cost. Oh, not that it adds to the conversation but i have a 4 string JO neck on my Squier CV Jazz. Wonderful neck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look at them tonight. I have a feeling some might be too expensive though. Hiring a shchool or hall is a good idea, except we don't want to take a PA and full back line/drum kit. That's the reason for wanting a rehearsal studio as these are normally included.

My current band need to get some live looking shots, and it seems the best way to do this is to find a rehearsal studio with a stage and set up our lights etc. We dont want to spend much so a photographic studio is out of the question. Im also planning on taking most of the shots myself so doing them at a gig is also not practical at the moment. So, does anyone have any recommendations that might fit the bill, must be in the London area. At the moment we use Mill hill music complex and they do have a room with a stage, but its a bit cramped to get the shots i want. At a pinch we can use it but thought i'd ask to see if anyone has any other suggestions. Cheers.

Nice one. Glad its living up to expectations. I cant say ive noticed any real drop in signal with my. obviously you get a slight mid drop as with any Jazz bass, but ive never had the volume go noticeably lower when both are on. Could this be to do with one pup being wired in reverse? (not sure i know what im talking about it it rings a bell).
