"Could you turn your backline down a bit ? "
dave_bass5 replied to JohnFitzgerald's topic in Amps and Cabs
None the less, the original question was 'Why such powerful amps..?', to which some have replied that they only use one amp, big enough for the 'backline only' gigs, and the same rig, turned down if necessary, for any FOH gigs. Seems reasonable to me.
Yes, I was going to say that as well. There was a question in the first post that has lead to a general discussion on a few aspects of using larger rigs. I totally understand that what we hear at large gigs is not the same as on stage, but not all PA rigs are large enough to mask the on stage sound, and not all bands will completely depend on FOH PA. It depends on the PA used, so a blanket statement isn't really 100% accurate IMO. -
You are right - I made this point earlier. Nobody seems to want to invest or have ownership of a PA!
Sometimes it's just not practicle. All the bands I've played with have used cars, and these cars are full of band members, band equipment and as much PA that will fit. If we had invested in a larger PA it would also mean someone, or all of use buying another large car or van, and have the extra cost to keep it on the road/parked etc. Considering I have been gigging constantly for almost the past 13 years with this set up, in 3 different but similar bands its hard to convince the others that they need to fork out a lot more. -
I think sj67 is meaning if it comes through the PA where your signal has likely been subjected to various processing. If it's just your rig amplifying the bass, then yeah, you're going to hear things a lot more uniform.
Yeah, probably but i read it as a blanket statement. Not everyone uses a full pro PA so having a loud back line/rig is needed. Some people seem to miss this point. -
Do people realise that the tone of their amp on stage is not the same as the punters out front are hearing?
Eh? I walk around the room at sound check and dont hear much difference to what i hear on stage. -

I use a 500watt rig so im ready for anything, and i dont need more than one rig to do a gig. Not sure how "obsessed" i am over gear. I dont waste money on different rigs for different gigs. One rig does it all. We never play through a big PA, and the few times i have the tone coming out of the monitors was not my tone, so they couldn't possible replace my rig and in no way was it enjoyable. @Mark. sorry, I hadnt seen your post when i was typing mine, just dont want you to think mine was aimed at you. -
Without having read the whole thread, my otherwise great Sire V7 has a minor issue that I'd like to adress. Due to the curved fretboard the E and G string are much closer to the pickup and are therefore substantially louder than the A and D string. It gets better when I screw down the pickups, but that dilutes the otherwise great and punchy sound of the bass. Has someone found a better way to battle this?
I suppose the smart ass answer is to play those strings with a slightly lighter touch, but in all honesty i cant say ive noticed this issue. -

I think i could live with those holes for that weight saving. Hmm, never really thought about it before but it does seem like a good move. Although the weight doesn't really bother me it would be nice to be a bit less neck heavy. -

Yeah, these aren't the lightest basses around. Mine is the only bass I've had in the past 10 years that I haven't modded. I think part of this reason is not knowning if things are standard fit, so not bothering. -

What difference do they make other than asthetics and now looks like the neck has wood worm (which to me asthetics is now not good)? I realise these are better tuners, but better how? I've done over 50 gigs with my V7 and never had any tuning issues so I don't think they are sub standard. -
Yeah, that 1212L isnt exactly light is it? Even my son can carry my BB2 in one hand without complaining. I cant imagine how light the 1x10 is.
Too late! In fact, I've already contacted Alex re suitability with my amp and band... his reply: 'Yes, that should be a great little rig! It'll be fine with the bottom end, even up against a moderately loud drummer.' So now I'm in trouble. Again.
But you have a great little rig already lol. Cant say i blame you though. Now the GAS wheels are in motion you definitely don't want to come anywhere near my BB2, although you are still welcome to try it :-)
No the retro range has one full range and one speaker that only operates on the lower frequencies per pair. So they can be used either way.
According to the website "The Two10 cab be used horizontally for maximum thump or vertically for increased clarity." I can confirm this as i noticed a slight difference when i tried it with mine. For me the best tone was horizontally, it did indeed have a b it more "retro" thump or low end. Also the Retro name has been dropped. Just thought i'd add that in case someone went looking for something called a Retro 210. @Mark. Leave now :-)
Mine are set to off as I've never found these add anything to my sound. I reckon they should remove the circuits, offer this as a stomp option and make the amps cheaper. Discuss....
Well they did some of that, but i looks like people just want the full set of knobs, even if most of us dont use them all. http://www.markbass.it/product_detail.php?id=117&markbass=Discontinued Im another user who leaves the EQ flat and mainly uses the two filters. Not too much, but these are the things that have kept me with MB over the past 7 or so years.

It looks like it will be a bugger to stand up against an amp etc. Definitely need a stand for that. -

It will be a Sire, that's all that really matters ;-) -
My TRBX505 was one of the best looking basses ive ever owned (IMO of course). Also the only brown bass. It seemed an odd choice for me as i wanted the white one, but at the end of the day i felt the brown would fit in more with the various styles we play. I love the white but i feel it gives off a certain vibe that can look out of place.

WOW!!!! Are the neck dimensions the same as the 5 string V7? -
I fancy getting a pair for taking to work and when im out and about, but a bit worried about the reported quality drop when using them with a cable, which ill do when im at my PC and for watching films etc on my iPad. Just wondered if anyone has used these. Im not after recommendations in any way, i just want to discuses these particular headphones as they tick all the right boxes (more or less).
-
People seem to like them judging by the thoughts in the existing 304/305 threads ;-) Very good basses, although i ended up getting a 505 as i wanted the safty net of it working with a dead or no battery.

Mark just brought my 1212L off me. Shame I didn't have time to have a chat but he seemed like a decent enough bloke......for a bass player :-) Cheers Mark, we must meet up for a proper chat at some point.

I saw them at the Marquee when it was in Charing Cross road. Great gig for all the wrong reasons. IIR the moment Rik came out he got a (plastic) pint glass right in the face. Even Brian May made an appearance.
