New cheap Marcus Miller endorsed range of basses - Sire
dave_bass5 replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
I've just sorted myself two free Sire gig bags direct from Sire on the Far East.. I've just got pay the £60 postage. I know it's a lot of money but I feel these bags are very good and they complete the Sire experience. Sire have been great to deal with, they offered the bags free of charge after I asked how I can actually buy one and was a bit over enthusiastic about my V7. Thinking about getting a M3, hence the second bag. -
stocking these things is a licence to print money.
And thats not a good thing for the customer IMO. -

I prefer it over the Lakland DJ5 I had a few years ago. Not quite as comfortable to play but tone wise I feel it's more what I hoped the DJ5 would have sounded like.....at quite a few £ cheaper. -
I'm shifting all my gear as I'm taking a long break from bands etc. However, I'll be keeping the MM V7. It's too good to sell.
Pretty much what i might be doing after our NYE gig, although ill put my rig in to storage rather than sell it. My son has shown an interest so even if i dont use it again he might. -

I actually prefer the passive tone, but I'm so used to passive basses I'm using active a lot as its new to me. I can't get over how nice the B string is. So different to my TRBX, which I thought was good. -

Another mug taken in by all the hype :-). I've done 4 gigs with mine now and can't see me needing any of my other basses. I'd say it's not as open and natural sounding as some jazz bases I've had, it's quite a thick tone no matter what I do with the EQ, but that's not really a negative, and it's helping me get over not using a P bass. -

Ive been wanting a 21012 for years, but due to how small and light my 1212L is ive just stuck with that. Its the mid-hump that sometimes annoys me with the 1212L. I can dial it down but not out. Still, its the only cab ive owned where ive been asked to turn down so its not all bad. -

What cab do you have? I have a 1212L and it can handle most things, but ive always thought the cab has a very distinctive tone that definitely imprints on to any bass ive used. ive been meaning to get something more traditional sounding for a few years but..well the 1212L has never struggled with volume so if its not broken..... I did prefer my 1210R but that was a bit too heavy ;-) -

Im talking just a small turn of the low end knob. I think mine was set a big high. It was more noticeable when i check the input stage on my Focusrite 2i2 rather than my amp, but once i backed the trim off in the bass it was a lot more even when switching between modes. -

I felt the default volume level of the pre amp was set too high. It was very easy to distort my input channel if i turned the bass boost up more an a few notches. Its very, very versatile though, although much more than ill ever need or use. -

There are two long threads on Talkbass about these basses, and quite a few of them came from Thomanns (yes, the Americans had to get them from Europe for a while). A few of these did go back to Thomanns as they had slight issues. Hopefully those weren't put back on sale without the issues sorted out (nothing really major). -

Have a look on their website, there is a message about the next batch i believe. There is no fixed date though. -

There is the usual single coil hum when either pup is on its own, even in active mode. Dead silent when both are on though. -

What I meat was that now the first lot have practically sold out they may find they need to ramp up production, and they might have to cut some of the love and attention the first lot had, just to keep up with demand. Let's hope this is not the case of course, but it does happen. -
No 5ers in stock:'(
You snooze....You loose :-). There is a message on the Sire website saying the next batch should be released in May I believe, but I'd expect later. It sounds like they may be slightly different, at least the 4 string bridge. Let's hope they can keep up the quality without cutting corners. -

I'm halfway through a gig at the moment. The bass, along with my Darkglass sound soooo large. Half the set so far was in passive mode. I've got passive set slightly louder than active mode, so when I switch to active the levels remain pretty similar, just the tone changes. This gig was the first gig I did with my TRBX505, and the B string on that sounded ok, but nowhere near as punchy and clear as the V7. The B string on the TRBX sounds soft and squishy compared to the V7. Same strings, same rig, same stage. Love it.!!!!' -

Ive got a TRBX505 and its much smaller and lighter than my 5 string V7. There is a huge difference. Amazing that they could fit 24 frets in to such a small bass ;-) -

Yes, a nice box of chocolates and flowers. Also, screen shot Thomanns page and Photoshop in a 25% Easter discount price and leave it open on screen ;-). -

Zero9. If the traditional looks/tone and logo etc are important why aren't you looking at the real deal, a proper Fender that has all the boxes ticked? For what it's worth I do agree, the Sire is almost a normal Jazz bass, but not quite. It feels big to me, and yes, the headstock is needless large. Saying that, maybe the size of the headstock is the reason i can't find any dead spots in places ive had the, before on other jazz basses. I'm also much more of a passive bass guy. Ive never really liked active basses. Saying that, I will use the active EQ as its there, and does sound good. If there was a passive version I would have got that though. Same with my TRBX. -

Agreed, definitly not sticky. I love my Squier necks, but although they are glossy as well they do get sticky. Not that this bothers me. In fact I prefer the finish on these to the Lakland JO maple neck I have. -
Oh, knickers to the lot of yez Yes I expect mine are nickels too, I just assumed that they were D'Add steels and didn't bother checking the hanging dooflip. I am a tit. I'll probably change them for my favoured Rotos anyway.
I must admit I thought they were steels as well. I've used these strings for a few years, but this bass sounded so bright and lively I had to go and double check. Funny though, they went dead after just one gig, they dont normally do this on my other bases. I'm looking forward to puttinb a set of balenced tension strings on though, I prefer the feel. I might leave the B sting on though, it's only there to support my thumb anyway :-) -

Nice write up, glad you like it. These things are the real deal (as the Americans say). I too used to have a Lakland DJ5 and never felt it really cut it compare to my other Jazz basses. It always seemed too warm. I love useing the bridge pup. As you say it's a very stong pup and takes well to EQ. It's definitly better than any jazz bass ive owned. As far as the strings go they should be nickels. My V7 had a hang tag on it that stated this. Did yours? They are the same as the stings I have on my other basses which are all defintitly Nickles.
