Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!
dave_bass5 replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Bass Guitars
Yep. First time I saw them was in the Bass centre in London. I went in there looking for a 5 sating, with about £2000 to spend. Ended up playing everything they had, and came away with the 55-01 (and a large wad of cash still in my wallet). I'd love to try a 55-02 one day. -

I had a 55-01 and thought it sounded a bit bland as well. I even upgrade the preamp but I think the pups were the issue. Lovely bass though. This was the first tie I had ever heard of Lakland, and I went for that over a Sandberg PM5. All this talk of the DJ5's tone is what I heard, and I'm not sure why this was. The pups were Hansons and not Fralins, but the JO5 I tried a couple of years later sounded quite different, and this also had Hansons in it. -
I used to have a dj5 ,lovely bass but I thought a little polite also in sound.nice neck and fretboard though
Yes, exactly what I thought. I really, really love the necks I've never played a JO5 but by all accounts they have a bit more character to them. Damn, I've now got GAS and I only got my Yamaha 2 weeks ago :-( -
No, I sugested buying two transmitters. I'm sure you can get hold of a second transmitter once you buy the first full system. I supose you would need to contact the manufacturer for this. I had two for my old AKG Bug system a few years ago, although one was just a back up with a fresh battery in it. I supose it might seem extravagant but I can't see any other way if you have to use two basses.
My problem is, we play in two different turnings, which means changing of guitars quite a lot throughout the set. If I fix the system securely on the strap, it's quite a hassle changing to another strap. Using the same strap is also a problem what with strap locks. It's just easier to pick up a guitar with the strap already fixed on. I used systems in the past where I used to stick the sender in my back pocket but that seems a bit dodgy, especially if I go for some acrobatic guitar swinging. Short of buying two systems, suggestions would be welcome
What do you mean about the strap locks? Don't you have them on both basses? I find the Schaller strap locks are very fast to attach and release, although I supose some would find them slow. I'd say buying another transmitter would be the best option. If you want the hassle free convincence of having the transmitter on the strap. Most systems will work with more than one transmitter, although only one at a time at this end of the range. The Line6 system has 6 easily switchable channels, all you would need to to is move the switch on the top depending on which transmitter is being used. You wouldn't even need to turn them off during the gig.

Interesting colour. I didn't know they came with clear guards. I agree, a black one would really set it off. It's a shame they dropped the black sparkle, the whole look was what convinced me to get mine. As I said earlier (I think), I was never knocked out by the tone. This was the most I've ever spent on a bass and felt a bit let down. It's just felt too warm and round compared to my (at the time) Highway1 jazz. I see me to lack the growl I was looking for. In all other respects it was perfect. Funny thing though, when I got it converted to a PJ, complete with Nordsrands, it still had that warm tone. -

Yeah, the black sparkle finish was really nice. It came with a white pick guess but the black one really improved the look IMO. I've had 4 Laklands and none have had any issues. I love thier necks. They seem flatter than a lot of basses but I find this helps get a lower action. They also have banjo sized frets, which again seems to make the necks very fast. I've still got a JO neck on my Squier Jazz. That neck seems to end up on most of my basses at some point. -
Got a list of basses at various shops ready to go at on Saturday, charcoal Lakland DJ5 is now looking favourite but I've got a whole range of multiple fenders to try at a few places,I will try every single one and if I like one I'm going to grab it regardless of the colour within reason Got a nice gig for it Saturday night too!
This is how my DJ5 ended up. I so miss this bass. -
Been using them for years, cant fault the service at all. Always my first port of call for strings and accessories.

I thought fanned frets were just a gimmick until Fran (Grandwazoo) brought one of his Dingwall 5 stings to a gig I was playing last year. After not playing a 5 stings for a few years I did a whole set with it and never struggled once. I've never had such a smooth transition between 4 and 5 string before. You really don't notice the frets and for some reason they just seem to be in the right position if that makes sense. The bass was also a passive jazz. Lovely bass although not a cheap bass. -
I must admit I've always used it In a pouch on my strap. I've just got a new strap and pouch but the two don't seem to work together very well, so for a while I'm going to have to use the transmitter just clipped to the strap. I am now a bit worried but I'll have to see how it goes.

I've not had any issue with mine in over 100 gigs. It feels flimsy and not very secure but it's never come open.

I went through this last week and actually gave up looking for a 5 string Jazz. Nothing really rocked my boat, so i got a cheap(er)Yamaha for now. I have a VM PJ and as nice as it is ive never really loved it. Maybe its the cheap wood or the rough edges on the sides of the neck. Compared to my CV's it seems a bit lower down the scale. This was the reason i didnt go tor the VM jazz V. Another one i looked at was the Fender Modern Player Jazz 5. This seemed like a really good choice but the one i picked up (and this was just a 4 string) was very heavy. As my budget was quite low, and i really wanted a passive bass, i decided to just get a Yamaha 5 string (completely the opposite of what i was looking for) and wait until i see if i get on with the extra string (again), then probably get a Fender MIA jazz 5 next year. I did have a Lakland DJ5 a few years ago. Lovely bass but i never really liked the tone. It was warmer and deeper than the 4 string Jazz basses i had at the time. I wish i still had it though :-) EDIT: I realise the above doesn't make sense. The idea was to get the Yamaha now and leave a gap for the perfect 5 string jazz, rather than getting something that will do the job but i would want to replace. The Yamaha sits in its own space in the collection. -
What do you find useful about the 5 sting when playing in covers bands ...
Low D at the end of every song :-) Ive gone back and forth between 4 and 5 for the past 11 years. Mainly 4 strings but when i was depp-ing with another band a lot i found they were doing similar songs to my band but in different keys. Having 5 stings meant i didnt have to play them differently in each band (most of the time). I am guilty of never really utilising the 5 stings properly. I dont think i ever really spent enough time re jigging my fingering, and always played a 5 much like a 4. The plan was always to lean new songs in the correct way, but i also found that the B sting never really had the bite the other low stings had. For the past 4-5 years ive been playing only 4 strings, but last weekend i brought a new 5 string. This time im going to do things properly. The bottom line for me is it was GAS, and not a need. If we covered a lot of 5 sting songs then it would have been a need, but most of our stuff doesn't really need it, and nay that were played on a 5 string can be covered on a 4, albeit with a bit of artistic licence.

Ive been using the cheaper AKG WMS systems for the past 11 years. Never had any issues with them but last year i got a Line6 G30. The extra clarity can be heard when close up to the amp, but not when the band are playing. it also lasts me about 3 gigs on one set of rechargeable, a bit longer than my old WMS40 system. We dont do huge gigs, and in fact i use them because the stages are so small its too easy to stand on my lead. Its also handy for me to go out front at sound check and sort the mix out.

Fret buzz on the first and second fret. Nut cut too high?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks. Yes, I think maybe I was a bit premature. I think maybe I'll be able to lower the saddles a bit now. Even though it was fine at the gig on sat (can't say the same about the playing) it was one of those things that stood out, as it's not happened with any of my other basses. I love the bass, and it's going to be my only gigging bass for a while. It's nice to be back to 5 strings, although so far it's just used for the low end last note of the song type of thing :-). -
Fret buzz on the first and second fret. Nut cut too high?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for the reply. Funnily enough today it seems to have settled down. I did tweak the truss rod a bit last night (although this wasn't the first time), and this morning all seems good. Hopefully I can drop the action a bit more now. This was my first experience with a Yamaha bass, and it's certainly not put me off. -

dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Howie. That's how I see it, although as I've never thought about the nut end before I can't say for sure that it's correct. I'm fine with turning things, you can always put them back, but making a permanent adjustment is a bit beyond what I'm prepared to do with a brand new bass. Looking at my other bass the nuts seem to be cut a lot deeper. I dont know if a 5 string is different, other than the extra thicker string. I can't imagine it should be but I maybe this bass has been designed to have a high action. I'll certainly mention all this when I go to the shop tomorrow. Cheers. -
Fret buzz on the first and second fret. Nut cut too high?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks Stoo. I've had a look and without taking the stings off ive used a 6" ruler and the top of the frets seem to be just below the bottom of the slots. I'd say this was ok. Howie, I did your 3rd fret test and I can fell a small movement, the gap is a out the height of a thin business card. I can start adjusting the truss rod more but I'm reluctant to do anything that might raise the action. -
Fret buzz on the first and second fret. Nut cut too high?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks for the reply. Yes, when I fret at the first fret (not sure the issue actually exists at the second now) and dig in I get more fret buzz than the rest of the neck. My thinking, and knowing very little about all this, is it could just be me not applying enough preasure to force the strings to clear the second fret properly. Maybe the angle of the string is too steep and I just need to apply more preasure. Ive played with the relief and it's not helped. Im normally ok at setting my basses up, I've been doing it for a few years but never touched the nut or frets, just the basic saddles/ truss rod stuff. Ill give your suggestion ago and see if the nut height is as expected. its a shame I can't get the action to my standard 2mm at the 12th fret (the manual States 3mm is the target height) but I guess I'm just going to have to get used to a higher action. Cheers. -

Yes, that's what I'm going to do, but I'd like to be armed with a bit of info before I go. Cheers. -
I got a new bass yesterday (Yamaha TRBX505) and everything seems perfect other than a bit more fret buzz at the first two frets. Its not choking as such, its just louder. Ive check the fret level and it seems ok. I was wondering if this might be to do with the nut height. It seems to me to be a bit high but then this si my first Yamaha bass so not sure what it should be. Im thinking of taking it back and getting the shop to sort it out, but im hoping its a real issue rather than them just raising the action too high (its higher than im used to already). I play with a pick and this seems to emphasise it, playing finger style seems fine. Its a minor niggle but one id rather not have on a brand new bass. Cheers.

NBD: I got Wunjoed again! 20+ Bass comparison and eventual purchase.

I was also In there yesterday. I was out looing for a Yamaha TRBX505. I've never been in that shop before. I saw lots of basses I could have brought but didn't. I didn't try anything out though, I edned up going to Yamaha shop in Wardour street and got one. Congrats on the new bass, it looks pretty settled in already. -
Fender Super 55 Jazz pickups anyone?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
I did get one for my PJ and thought it was really good. It was definitely silent when used on its own, and had quite a vintage single coil vibe. It was loud enough to use on its own in my PJ, easily keeping up wit the Fralin pup at the neck position. I ended up selling both pups to get a EMG Geezer butler set, but wish I hadn't.
