1.
I've just ordered from Gear4Music for the first time. Got a cable that was damaged in the post. That was fine, I emailed them and they very kindly said to keep that cable and they'll send another. However, their email to me about the dispatch of the new cable included my account password at the end. What the actual f***?! Now I have to change my password on a fair few sites (I have a range of passwords that I use so it's not all sites and nothing absolutely secure thankfully.) So if you use Gear4Music, please make sure that at the very least you use a unique password for their site. Emailing a password is the most stupid breach of security a site could do. I can't believe that in 2014 major retailers do this. If they held any card details on their site they'd be up for a massive fine for a breach in data security.
Is this a new thing then? Ive just gone back through all my orders and cant see this on any emails.
2. I limit myself to one gigging bass, so for me its all or nothing. I can quite easily get by with either of course, and considering most of our set is songs from the 60-70's flats work well, but i also like to hear those overtones as well. I thought Chromes would get that but i find thme very close to dead rounds, and thats not quite the same as a nice deep thump flat string. Im hoping the GHS flats will be "the one" but i know ill eventually put rounds back on.
3. I keep going back and forth between flats and rounds. I love the idea of flats but rounds seem to keep winning out. Ive got a set of Chromes and TI's (missing a D string at the moment) that have been on and off my gigging bass for the past couple of years. Each time i put them on and love the tone, but then at gigs i miss the overtones. At the moment i have a new set of GHS Precision's on and to my ears these are what flats should sound like. More thump than the TI's and Chromes, and very smooth to play. I do love TI''s for their lower tension but never felt they produced the thump i thought flats should produce.
4. I too saw them probably more times than I can remember. Very down to earth girls. They are still going, my girl friend was in a band with Jackie before she joined GS, really funny person to talk to (she was married to Midge Ure's bass player, another really nice person). Back then there was also Rock goddess. IIR the drummer was about 14 or 15. Very sexy bass player. For me the best of the bunch were Vixen, although I never got to see them live.
5. Bugger. More GAS now. As much as i love my BDDI i dont use it for drive or distortion, and this new MXR looks like it covers everything else. Looking forward to some real life reviews.
6.
i suppose i could have posted in there, but i was looking for background info and opinions as well..
Plenty of info already on here ;-) For what its worth i had one and loved it, although the painted neck took a bit of getting used to. It could easily cover the Motown stuff we do, along with the more modern stuff. Very warm tone if you wanted it. I wish i still had it now :-(
7. I think you have hit the nail on the head, it's your view. I do see what you are getting at, but sometimes it's just not possible to keep on playing. It's always better to finish the night with live music IMO, and if this means a longer break in between then so be it. If people were there to see live music then stating later would look just as bad IMO. I've never played a function/wedding etc where the break has been any less than 30mins, unless the schedule has gone to pot, so I still say this has nothing to do with them being unprofessional. If they had agreed on timings before hand, and they stuck to these then they did no wrong. I'd have thought that the organisers should have had other things going on between the bands sets though, to keep the momentum going.
8. I'd say if the band were told when and how long to play, and they stuck to this brief then they were acting professionally. As already been said, its not unusual, and normally out of the bands control unless the band are putting the gig on and calling the shots. Im really not sure why this thread is titled as it is, as there is nothing to show the band weren't acting professionally, just that the OP had to leave and missed their second set and feels cheated (IMO).
9. He has a skill that I could never even dream of achieving, but that's probably because I wouldn't want to. Because it's played on a bass it's bass playing, but to me it's not bass playing in the traditional sense, and leaves me cold. He has taken the bass beyond what it was designed originally to do, and that's fine, but he might as well be playing a guitar or keyboard IMO. It suites the music though.
10.
When I briefly had a Streamliner 900 to gig with, I found it really difficult to cut through in general. Switched back to Markbass and had no problems at all. Just sayin' Si
Same here. I went from MB SA450 to a Streamliner 600 and suddenly there was a hole in our mix (although i felt the tone was a bit nicer). Nothing i could do in over 10 gigs would get me back to where i wanted to sit in the mix. I got hold of a MB F1 and did two gigs with each head doing one set each. Ended up selling the Streamliner and never looked back.
11. Ah right, same as all mine. I was going to suggest the older JAM interface but the new version with the lightning connector is a lot more money so won't bother (it is very good though)
12.
. Would it be worth me getting the iRig kit then?
I found it to be rubbish but others dont. What iPad have you got?
13.
However, what can you do with one if go bought it ?
Wait 10 years or more then flog it and make some money :-)
14. Ah sorry, of course (i have it lol). It was the update 1 i was thinking of. Sorry about that.
15.
Paradise Theatre by any chance? I have that one too.
Yep, thats the one. Actually its not that bad, i can listen to it now, but back then i wasn't really in to that tripe of music. I also had True Colours by Split Enz album, for the same reason. Back then i used to like buying this sort of thing, and it did help get me in to music i might not have bothered with.
16.
Didn't know about M-Audio not supporting equipment for Win 8, was looking at the M Track as a possibility as well, but with my new machine running Win 8.1, it sounds like it's one to avoid.
Windows 8.1? Is that the leaked ISO or beta? Its not due out until about April i believe.
17. The one and only time i ever brought a Styx record was because of the lazer etching. Lovely to look at, not so to listen to lol
18. Sorry, to be clear i meant for my Delta sound card, i expect the USB stuff will still be supported.
19. Ive just replaced my ageing Delta 2496 card with a very nice Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. I was going to go for the 2i2 but like the idea of the mix control on the 2i4, as most of the time ill just be playing along to iTunes for learning songs etc, so dont want to have to open up a DAW just to do this. I also wanted the pad buttons as i had read that the inputs could be easily over driven. After a few tests i dont really need the buttons, the signal level from my bass is low enough to work fine, but i guess its nice ot have this extra control. The Focusrite stuff seems to have a very strong following, and even with just a few hours play with mine tonight i can see why. So far its been rock solid and perfect for my set up (which includes my son needing to use the PC) As already said, it does come with Ableton Live lite. Ive not bothered with this as i have the full Live 9 suite, plus Sonar X1 and the 2i4 worked perfectly with those first time. Ive always thought internal sound cards were better, and i had a M-Audio Fast track that was a nightmare to use a few years ago. With M-Audio not writing any new drivers, specifically for Windows 8 i felt it was time to move on. If on a low budget the Behringer interfaces look really nice, and they are a lot cheaper.
20. Exactly why I don't use mine live. My shoes are too wide, and although I don't have any real wacky tones it's still a pain to have to watch my step (pun intended). I might investigate the new zoom boxes that Dan posted about in another thread. Looks more useful for me.
21. I've got one of these and although it's not a problem putting it in any wall I want I'm too lazy to drill holes in a wall. I just put it up on the side of a wardrobe. Easier to drill in to the wood. Just an idea.
22. Hmmm, owning both the B3 and 60B i can see me getting a B1on to replace both boxes if the price is right. Having tired to gig with each, i found the B3 to work well but the foot switches are placed just too close for me so i dont use it for gigs, and the 60B is really only used in a rack style rather than on the floor. Cheers Dan, more money to splash out ;-)
23. Having used both a BDDI and B3 at the same gig, and also now using a 60B id say the Zoom boxes do a very nice BDDI but there is a difference, and neither Zoom boxes nail the BDDI tone as close as even the BDI21 does.
24. Bringing this back to life as im still looking for something to go in the bridge position. Ive been using a Fender Super 55 and although it is noiseless, and balances very well with my Fralin, its just not quite the tone im after. not quite burpy enough. Im probably going to get the new GBZ EMGPJ set in a few months when they are available but id like to try another split coil jazz pup before then. I am even thinking of going back to the stock VM Jazz pup if i get really bored over the next month or so.
