1.
Some people don't know the difference between having fun and buggering about getting nothing done.
Not everyone wants to take it seriously from the off. Ive been in bands who had no intention of ever gigging, it was purely for fun a few times a month. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. We all knew the score and we had a lot of fun as there was no time pressure etc. I also find not everyone has the same amount of free time. In my current band two of us have full time jobs, two dont. I find it hard to find time to learn new songs (if needed), although im the one that takes the band the most seriously and books most of the gigs. I think the OP got the right outcome, it sounds to me like he was serious about it and the others weren't. No one is in the wrong IMO, although i don't agree with people messing others about and have been through this myself and find it very frustrating. I think the OP's band did the right thing letting him know, and judging by this thread it was going that way anyway.
2. If no one minds id like to semi hijack this thread with a similar issue i had recently, although with a different effect. Im well aware of the method of changing one wire, ive had to do it in the past but when i changed the P pup in my new PJ i had a strange issue. I tok the stock pup out and put a Fender 62RI Original in. I know this to be a working pup as it came out of my main bass a few months ago. When both pups were up i had that hollow, nasal tone. Fair enough, change one of the wires over on the P pup, but when i did this the pup sounded more muffled and quieter, especially the D and G strings, even on its own. I took it out and put a Fralin in and all was good. I then put the Fender pup in my P bass and it worked fine. Ive never come across this before. I always though it didnt matter what wire went to ground on a P bass, at least, when its on its own. Granted i dont have a lot of experience with PJ's but if the stock, and Fralin worked fine then i dont think i was doing anything wrong. The only difference i can see is the Fender has a brass plate under it, i wonder if this was causing the issue. Im all sorted now, not really looking to sort it out, but if anyone has any ideas id like to hear them. Cheers, and good luck Dave, its really easy to do and once you have done it the first time you will feel more confident about messing about inside a bass.
3. I cant remember seeing any gig bags on line that didn't have the dimensions posted. Im not talking about eBay, just places like GAK, Soundslive, Strings Direct etc.
4. Dont most retailers post dimensions on their websites? Cant you get the measurements from there? For what its worth my old 55-01 would fit in any gig bag i had, same as my Fenders.
5. I see no build or quality issues between my CV's and my new VM. Different feel etc yes, but i can find less issues (none) with my VM than i did with 3 MIA's a few years ago, and a HW-one. Cant buy a old VM if it wasn't released in the configuration you want. ;-)
6.
So you like VM's as long as the neck and pups are replaced???
Nope. I just love it more now I have done the mods, and mainly as it feels more familiar and more to my liking. If I didn't have the mods to put on it already I wouldn't have bothered changing any of the parts. It's a great bass in its own right but I prefer jazz necks, and I like the tone of the rain. None of that is a reflection on the bass, and there wouldn't really be any off the peg alternative with those specifications anyway. I'd probably do the same with a MIA bass if I felt like it.
7.
Hmmm... you might want to avoid a Mike Lull bass then... Most of them are under 8lbs! They should be really cheap!
Haha, i will definitely avoid those, and any of the over priced (for me) boutique basses. I see no need ever to pay that much for a bass. I do understand what you are saying though, but knowing the VM cost less than £250 only adds to the fact that i know its cheap.
8. I love my Squier VM, Its pretty much become my only bass now. I took the Fralin out of the CV P and took the neck off the CV Jazz lol. Now its not only lovely to look at, its very comfortable and familiar to play, with the tone ive been used to, and with the added Jazz growl/burp thrown in. 9. Liam, if you want to borrow mine for a few weeks let me know.
10. I prefer the brighter tone of the BDI21. It has a nice fizz that the BDDI can't achieve. I never use the Presence knob but the BDI21 just seems more open. I do however prefer the look and functions of the BDDI, especially the phantom powering, and do like the warmth of the BDDI live.
11. Another big yes for this champ box. I too got one for a gig that was not going to have any back line for me. It was a strange one for me but I kept hold of the box and after a few false starts one night it just clicked and I've never looked back. Well, actually I use a BDDI now but do keep my BDI21 as a back up, and do actually prefer the tone of it, I just prefer the look and form factor of the BDDI
12. Yes, this was only using headphones at home. Interesting reply from Zoom though, I guess it makes sense but I've not had that issue with any other unit like this. Thanks for the heads up though.
13. Yes, same here. Very disappointed on first couple of plays, but since then ive only used USB at home, and a 1Spot PSU at gigs and not had this issue.
14. Working for me. I won't say working ok because I don't believe they have ever worked ok since this new system was put in place. It's a bit annoying getting notifications come in for every post, even though they state you will only get one per visit. Still, It does mean I can read the thread without actually coming on here.
15. In my quest for a bridge pup to match a fender 62 RI Original P in my VM's PJ, I've recently found out about the above pups. They are hum canceling split coils, and seem to be a good match, on paper at least, but I've not read many posts about them. Just wondering if anyone who has used them can post their thoughts. I realise there are plenty more in this area, but I'm asking specifically about the fenders in this thread. Cheers.
16. Ive got both CV's and a VM. IMO the VM feels cheaper than the CV's, but i cant put my finger on why as there are no issues with it. I think the CV's have much better necks, but the VMs arent too bad. My PJ neck has sharper edges, but no issues as such, its just the way its designed i guess. I have put my CV Jazz on my VM PJ and its really the ideal instrument for me. The VM feels lighter, and i do equate that to cheapness, but as far as fit and finish goes id say its equal to my 2 CV's. I have no issues gigging any of my Squiers, i gave up on more expensive basses a few years ago.
17.

i have one somewhere without its original plastic covers (which i pinched for my wizard pickups because it was cream)

let me see if i can find it

Thanks for that, please let me know if you do find it and ill have it off you. As the email notification system seems to be down for some at the moment just drop me a PM if you have any luck. Cheers.
18. I watched some of it last night but couldn't stand to see it through to the end. I get why he was a sensation back then, and did enjoy the documentary as it did explain who he was etc,but to me his playing, especially live, leaves me very cold and bored. I find it very difficult to hear any actual music in his playing, its all noise. To me he was just the first of many who could make a racket and get called a genius.
19. Thanks for the replies. I didnt get any notification about them so missed out on the one for sale, shame as i would have taken it. I think i will go for the Ultra jazz, they do indeed seem to be a lot easier to get hold of as a single, although i will look in to the other suggestions as well. Its not that there is anything wrong with the stock one, but i know when i put the Fralin in, which is a bit louder than the stock one, im worried the bridge pup might get drowned out a bit. I do want to use both pups on occasionally, i like the PJ tone and that was a reason for buying a PJ. I understand the slight tone drop when both are on 100%, but id hate for the bridge pup to get lost.
20. Nothing for me for a few days. Had a new PM today with no email notification, plus a couple of subscribed threads have new posts in them today, same result.
21. Thanks for the replies. As far as i can see Thomanns (normally my first port of call) only seem to have the set rather than the singe pup. Ive not inquired anywhere yet though, I've just been looking at websites. I hadn't thought about getting it direct, ill look in to that. Ive never used one of these pups but by all accounts its pretty special, and im sure will be a good match for a slightly higher output P pup going in the bass.
22. As above. Ive looked in my usual places but all i can find is the set. I only want the bridge pup, to go in my PJ. I know i could buy the set and sell the neck pup but id rather just buy the one. Cheers.
23. Cheers Guys. I guess those are my two main hobbies so its nice to be able to combine them.
24.
Exactly the same journey T-bird. I've found that the fewer things I have to play with, the better for me. A passive P-bass, an amp with as few controls as possible and an efficient cab does it for me. Any more and I'm 'knob twiddling' all night
Yep, same here. In fact i got rid of my P-Retro as i found i was playing with it too much during gigs. I would like to use effects, ive got a Zoom B3 amongst other things, but i really cant be bothered with the extra leads and messing around. Bass/wireless/BDDI (never adjusted during a gig)/Amp/Cab does all i need.
25. Haha, thnaks. Sort of spur of the moment purchase really, no regrets though.
