South East Bass Bash No.7, Surrey, Saturday 21st September 2013
dave_bass5 replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
This Bass Bash sounds just like a Sat afternoon in the Bass Cellar. I thought us bass players were a sensible, considerate bunch, who on the whole cant stand slapping :-) -
Haha, yeah, that's me

Fran, as i said before, it wont be this month (unless i get a few more gigs in). Ive got a 3 week break after the 12th Oct, so that time can be spent getting used to it. If i get it before then il be tempted to use it on the next gigs, and that could be a disaster lol.
-
I should add, the interface used also makes a difference. Most work better with something like iRig or JAM (JAM is better IME but cost a lot of money). I brought the Peterson interface when i first got the app, but ithat thing is waaay over priced for what it does.
I also would agree that the Polytune of iPhone is great but... ha! there is an even better one out there and that is the iStroboSoft by Peterson strobo tuner with a suberb accuracy.
Yep, Ive got both and the Peterson one is better better, in that it seems more accurate. Mostly used when doing set ups.

Thanks for the heads up. I had the same issue with 2 MIA black Jazz basses a few years ago. The 3TSB and maple neck was what really drew me to these basses, its a colour combo ive wanted for a few years now, but if the finish is that thin then maybe ill get one of the others. I know i can send it back if i dont like it but id rather not have to do that, its becoming a bit of a habit. I love maple boards but do prefer a darker body colour. The CAR seems to fit the bill but would need a black PG on it ASAP, whereas the white looks just fine as it is. Im not going to move on this for a couple of weeks at least so ill have plenty of time to make my mind up.....and then wish i got the other lol.
-
The problem I have is I do love the look of them all. As for why buy a Fender. I've been wondering this myself ever since getting my first CV. I understand they look nicer and had a few refinements but I don't feel either of my CV's lacking tone or playability, and for me that's what counts the most (plus spending as little as possible)
-
So you think i should get the White one then eh? I must admit the 3TSB was top of my list, but i do sooo love the white as well.
-
Cheers Andy. 18mm sounds ideal. Good to know the neck is better than the previous one, looks like ill be spending some money soon. Thanks for the help.
-
Cheers Andy, that would be great. Yes, centers will be fine. How are you finding the bass?
-
I've been looking at see of those Squier threads but it doesn't seem clear what the spacing actual is, although as you say there are comparisons. Maybe I'll go and ask outright via PM with someone who does have one. The worst bass I've ever owned was a Squier P bass special 5 string. I found it a nightmare to play as the neck felt too wide and it was very uncomfortable. This was at the time I had a Honer 5 string and a Spirit 5 string, so I was used to 5 strings. Ever since then I've been very nervous about another Squier 5 string, but I have a good feeling about the VM (not that I've actually play one yet).
-
Do you cut your strings to the "correct" length?
dave_bass5 replied to Roland Rock's topic in Accessories and Misc
I always cut a full thumbs length past the post off the strings. Seems to work well for my Fenders. -
Yep, just the official spec's, as i too found. Its not a huge deal breaker, but it would force me to replace the bridge sooner rather than later if i do find its a bit wider. Cheers anyway.
-
I have no idea what the string spacing is on a Fender P5, although it felt comfortable. As for why it might be different anyway, i have no idea, i didnt ask if they were different, just asking what the VM's measure. I do know that the string spacing on the MIA 4 string is different to the spacing on the High Mass bridges the Classic Vibes have, so that one reason i suppose.
-
Im looking at getting one of the above but cant get to try one out. Im sure it will fit my needs but id like to know how far apart the strings are spaced at the bridge. I had a Fender 5P a few years ago and still regret selling that. Im trying to get back in to 5 strings on the cheap, so not expecting too much but the VM does look like the closest ill get without selling one of my kids. Not interested in anything that isnt a passive P bass. I'd also probably think about putting a MIA 5 string bridge on it at some point (i like the look of them, thats all), but i dont intend to mess about with it too much at first. Cheers for any info.

Precision Basses with slim necks and narrow nut widths
[FYI, I did stick on my Squier CV Jazz neck onto the Squier CV 60's P - and I thought the tone lost something.
This was not my experience when i did it, but maybe i wasnt really listening out for it. I had the necks reversed for well over a year before putting the Lakland neck on it. I -

Ive had a Lakland JO jazz neck on my CVP for almost two years. Best thing i ever did. Before that i just swapped my two Squier CV necks over as i dont use the Jazz much. The CV necks also have vintage frets, and i feel this makes them a bit faster for me, as i dont need to press down as much. -
Cheers guys. The stack knob idea is appealing, and one I had considered. To be honest I don't really use tone knobs much, although I do need to have one. Keeping the CV body seems like the least hassle. Its not that I hate it, I'm just not over the moon with the colour. I can certainly live with it. Who knows when a loaded PJ body that is the right price, in the right colour will come up, and I definitely want to keep using my Fralin and Gotoh bridge, so I'd end up with bits I'd have to try and re sell, even if I put the CV back to stock.
-
I had but I really like the Squier neck, especially as it has vintage style frets. At the moment I love everything about my bass other than the colour (not really an issue though).
-
Has anyone done this to a Squier CV bass? After playing both a 5 string and a PJ at the last gig, I've just realised how much I'd love a PJ again. The thing is I really don't want to get rid of my CVP, but don't mind getting it routed for a Jazz pup. I had my old Lakland DJ5 converted but I didn't think it worked well. Then again, I didn't really get on with that bass, tone wise, before or after (now gutted I sold it of course) I'm wondering what control options would be best to go for. I'm well aware of the standard vol, vol, tone, but how about vol, mix, tone, or ? I'd rather not use any switches but maybe there is a combination I haven't thought off. Ill be keeping it passive, and I'd like to keep the knobs to no more than 3. I already have a Fralin P in it, and definitely can't stretch to a Fralin Jazz, so does anyone have a suggestion for what might work well? I'm almost tempted to put a Wizard 74 in it but I'd rather not spilt the set I already have. I expect I'll get the Gallery to do the work, it's a bit beyond me, but I'd lie to go in with a firm idea of what I'm after. Cheers.
Guys, can I make the appeal - if you do feel their are genuine issues with the way business is being conducted on BC, then please do flag to the moderating team. I'll admit, we can't help the prices people might set for their items - but if they're trying to bypass the payment gateway; if you're unsure of the provenance of the item; or if it looks like they're a commercial seller or a scammer, please do get it reported.
As I said in my post, no rules were broken, and this was well before the payment system came in, It just didn't feel like a "close knit comunity" type of thing to do. I've seen more than one of my old basses or cabs go for a bit more money on here, but I know I undersold them or that the reail price had gone up, and they were passed on with full disclosure and links back to my threads. I'm cool with that, and I know the sellers were genuine players who just wanted to move the basses on. I just dont feel comfortable with the other way of selling, the buy it and relist it without full disclosure, and at a higher price, by members how only join to buy and sell. It's just my way of thinking though, I'm a fussy and paranoid bugger sometimes.
But not on Basschat, obviously.
No, there aren't many stupid people on here ;-)

I dont have a really issue with them buying and selling, but i would expect them to contribute to our community rather than just come her to make a profit. This is the reason ive always thought members should rack up some posts before being allowed to sell things (sorry, i know thats off topic)
hmmm... Sold some stuff on here quite a while back and the guy told me that was the best offer he could make. I let them go for a reduced price (£400) and I thought he would be happy with the kit. A few weeks later they surfaced here with a hundred pound mark up...and I see he lists quite a bit of stuff. I wouldn't call him a dealer but I would think he does 'deal'.... Would I sell to him again... lets just say I would rather not... but that is just my perception of the place, here. Has it left a nasty taste..??
A similar thing happened to me. The guy said he had already owned a the same bass I was selling, but still asked where it was made. I thought that strange but so what, I got a sale. Checking this guy out it seemed he had a lot of sales on here but no community posts. Months later it was on here for more money being sold by a different member (with. Very low post count IIR), with no indication of its history, not even when I posted a light hearted post in the thread. That was totally ignored. It wasnt even mentioned that it was already secondhand. It had a couple of issues when I sold it, and I was up front about that, I'd also ripped it apart at some point to change pups and electrics etc. The new owner was well aware of its history, they got in touch with me, so it's all good, but to me it's obvious the are some people treating our once safe place as a cheaper, and less legal alternative to eBay etc, with no real beinifit to this community. it was at this point I felt BC was not the place it used to be. I'm careful now to who I sell things to. I am a good hearted person, and will let things go a bit cheaper to help others, but I will always check posting history now, and if I think it's just some one buying and selling they can look elsewhere for a bargain. They are doing nothing wrong of course, I just won't sell to some one I feel is just in it for the money.

I dont mind if someone wants to make a profit out of buying and selling gear on here, but i do feel its a bit underhanded to avoid and/or lie about an item to do it. Ive seen it done (with gear that ive sold on here).
