The thing is that when people get to a certain level engrs can't pull them up on it ..or daren't... but you wont get a studio gig with that sort of playing in the first instance... I think it will mix down ok but you woundn't be happy to be solo'd ...and there would probably be a lot of fixing which again is time and money which some people wouldn't or couldn't spend.
Agreed. I bet there isn't many of us that would do a take in the studio and leave mistakes or bad timing in it without wanting to try and fox it or doa re ake, even if it did sound ok in the mix. Sloppy can work, I should know as that's my style , but so much is made about "in the pocket", "locking in" etc I'm can't imagine not trying to get things as good as possible. Live is another matter though.

Well a gig bag would have cost me £5 postage, that's much bigger than a small pickup. That doesn't make sence. I'm well aware of Marks good rep but if I feel the mark up on postage was a bit much, unless I'm missing something. Can't fault the level of service though. Agree about the Fralin, it's the third one Ive had and the best P bass pup I've owned.....again.

Another +1 for Bass direct. Just got my Fralin pickup from Mark in less than 24 hours. I was a bit put out that they charged me £7 P+P when the bag has postage of only £2.60 on it but business is business i suppose.

Ive got a maple Lakland JO4 neck on my Squier CVP. Best necks ive ever played. Agree about the look of the bridges though, while they dont bother me as much as, say the ugly G&L headstock's, i do prefer the more traditional Fender look. Oh, and ive just brought a Fralin for it as well :-)

Ive used Jeanies Pickguards twice for my Lakland's and their prices worked out cheaper than getting one done with Simms over here. EDIT: Just wanted to add that although there was nothing wrong with the Simms one i had to post my original PG to them, and this of course added to the cost.
Why is it always assumed that "thin = fast"?
Its not, there have already been a few posts discussing what fast means

Pay just enough to get a bass you feel works. I sold my Lakland's and now only use Squiers. For me anything more costly (assuming i just want passive P and Jazz bass) is a waste of money and id only be paying more for the cosmetics. Ask yourself what do the others give you. The MIA's are great basses (although i prefer the frets on the CV basses) but for the money what do they offer over the cheaper basses, that matter to YOU. All are P basses, all sound like P basses etc etc. So, from the original list my vote goes to the CV, although i think the Matt freeman is much better looking.

Good news then. I really like jamUP, although i now prefer Ampkit. Although Amplitube was the first of this type i never really got on with it, the two big issues i had were the iRig and the fact that you had to load converted tracks in to it before you could play along to them.
Lucky escape by the sound of it. Been in "the business" all their lives, but still only semi-pro? Probably a bit crap then as well as being t*sspots.
Wow, that was quick. I know for some its the standard BC answer but i would have thought a few good posts would have been before this. At least Gust0o got in first with a decent post.
Not sure about the Jazz's but.. I just recently had a standard-wind Fralin singlecoil put into my 51 P bass At first I wondered what was going on, playing with the band I had to roll the volume and tone knobs right back on the bass, where with the stock pickup I had both wide open (that's me and P-basses) to achieve roughly the same clarity and bottom end. The Fralin's seem to have a lot more response and are even sounding over the strings and a little smoother with the highs, even tho there are a lot more brittle highs on tap. (almost too much) That's how I have found it on a singlecoil P-bass.
More or less my findings as well. Had my first one in a Lakland Duck Dunn and was amazed at how much the tone and volume knobs worked compared to my previous basses. My second Duck Dunn came with a Lakland pup and i felt it lacked the magic of the first, so i got another Fralin and the bass came to life. Ive been thinking about getting one for my current P bass but cant afford a new one this time. Ive never tried the Jazz pups but i cant imagine they would disappoint.

The output was fine. I didnt actually move anything last night. No dials in the software, not on the JAM (although that was already set up for my basses, i have a pice of tape over the dial to keep it in place) and not the output from the ipad. Im sure it was a bit too loud but i was in a hurry so didnt mess with things. I had just downloaded and reinstalled the software so everything other than me changing to the bass amp was at default. Have you checked the input and output meters? Are they peaking? I found in the past it was the output level that caused me the most bother.

I just used headphones (good ones, not the ear buds). My jazz also has wizards in it although they aren't too hot. I can't think of anything else to suggestet, good luck tracking down the problem.

Ok, ive just tried it and it sounds fine. This is the first time ive used JAM with this software and i was quite impressed how much better Amplitube sounds without the iRig. I played both my passive basses though it using the default bass amp and got a nice strong tone, no hint of the distortion i used to experience with iRig. This is on a iPad 2.
-
No problem, ill do it as soon as i get home tonight. I too had the iRig and never really liked it. In fact back then i couldn't get a decent clean tone with Amplitube no matter what i did. At the time Amplitube wasnt compatible with the JAM type of interfaces, im assuming it is now.
-
Ill give it a try tonight and let you know how it sounds. I dont really like Amplitube but i do have it. I too much prefer AmpKit as it has Trace Elliot and Ashdown rigs in it.

Not sure if its too late but we do a good mix of the above, probably more 60-70 based but do cover all era's. Most of the band are based in North London so its fairly local as well. http://www.blowup.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

My second ever bass (Ibby Blazer being the first) was a black Thunder 1A. I actually dont remember much about it other than it sounded great at the time.

Ive had one for a couple of months now. Its the best comp ive ever used, but at the same time its the most transparent as well. Im not sure if thats a good or bad thing, especially at this price. I want to hear it lol. I did have it up for sale but have withdrawn it for now. I dont need it for my pick playing, which so far has been 99% of the time, but im trying to go 100% finger style and for this its really helping even out my bad technique. ill hang on to it for a while yet but will have sold it by the end of the year.

Yes, definitely a difference. The bass had more body to it, more low end punch and just sounded better IMO. Saying that, i dont have the Thumper in any more, I have a Fender Original 62RI and i much prefer this pup. Its not quite as dark sounding, but still a big improvement over the stock pup and sounds more "woody" to my ears, while still having a nice low end thump.
