The IEM (in ear monitors) Bible thread
dave_bass5 replied to EBS_freak's topic in Accessories and Misc
Talking of cable’s, i think it was this thread where we were talking about stereo using a jack to XLR cable in to a P2. Back then i couldn't get this to work. Last week i was over at a mates place and he uses a P2. There was no issue with stereo for him. I got a new P2 today and i also have stereo. Guess i had a bad unit. -

Thanks, good info. I will look in to it. I guess £500 isnt out of the question if i end up with a good, reliable fit. i will disagree about the MEE’s vs KZ10 (and KZ10 Pro) though. My singer (and GF) has the KZ Pro, and i didn't like them when i tried them. I wanted to, but they just weren’t for me. They sounded a bit harsh and brash to my ear. Flat, and maybe more true, but cold and lifeless. I went through 4 versions of the MEE’s, inc the 4 driver version, and settled on the 3 driver version. Nice and warm, not neutral but much more pleasing to my ears. So i could get the MEE’s re shelled? I really like the sound of them, and while im sure (no pun intended) more money could get me better, it seems a waste of money to me as im already happy with the ones i have. Other than the fit. -

Hmm, id never thought of it like that. Now it makes sense that people get their IEM’s re shelled. I must admit im not too keen on having those large lumps sticking out of my ears. I think i need to re up on all this again and find some that take the custom shells. Thanks for heads up. -

Yeah, looks like i have no real option. I know Mee do them for $150 (im using Mee IEM’s) but not sure if i have go to them? I realise i need to get my ears scanned (Specravers do it) but it would speed things up if i could get them made over here. -

I really need to look in to custom fits. Ive really struggling keeping my right ear in, even with foam tips. Ive tried quite a few different types so far, and although most work, i find the seal isnt great after a song or two. -

Well yes and no. I get he might be turning them on at home to get a tone he likes, but he also admits he has never bothered with EQ and used to let the guitarist set his tone (explains a lot) until I came along. So I have tried to educate him and he is having none of it. Takes him a min or so to re tune one bloody string, but has often played more than a few songs before realising he is still down tuned 😂. And also saying his amp Isn’t loud enough when he is standing behind it 🙄. Sorry for derailing this thread. -

Don’t get me started. It’s a passive P and he has no bloody clue about all this. Been playing for almost 40 years apparently. I keep having a go at him but it just won’t sink in. He has just brought a Fender Rumble head and cab. He has high and high mid maxed out, contour on, treble boost on. Playing thought a fender 2x10 with tweeter on. Squeak’s all over the place, clanks etc. we are playing Motown, Beatles etc. it annoys me so much. It ruins the mix. After every sound check I turn all that crap off and it’s fine, so gig wise it’s not a huge issue (other than the turning down), but come the next rehearsal it’s all back on. He plays well but is clueless, and stubborn. There, you got me started 😂 -

These guys are just old school, but in a very basic way. Said they have done loads of gigs but have no idea how to act professionally on stage. Bass player keeps turning his bass down (on the bass) and quite often forgets to turn it up. Without someone in the audience letting us know how it’s sounding the whole mix can go tits up, so trying to get them to change to a system when they haven’t grasped the most basic one is pointless. I do point out the better way of hearing yourself when they do complain, but I don’t push it. -

Yes, that’s my attitude. This band even text’s me things like ‘do I need to bring a monitor?’, ‘do I need to bring a mic stand?’ I now tell them I don’t care if they do or don’t, I don’t need them so it’s up to them. When I joined I said I was happy to supply the PA, as long as they sort the monitors out. So they have their monitors with them. As I’m playing keys I really do depend on having a monitor of some sort. I have no issue with using my DBR12 on stage but it’s one more thing to carry. Now my whole monitoring system, along with all my leads and other things go in one bag. -

Ive now gone over to using IEM 100%, but im the only one that does in my band. Even the singer who has IEM’s doesn’t always use them (mainly because she forgets to charge them). I never realised just how loud the band is at rehearsals until recently. I took one ear out and was blasted by a wall of sound. We aren't a loud band as such, both guitarists use small 1x12 combos, but the difference was amazing. We are talking about upgrading the monitors, at the moment they use small cheap boxy sounding things, but IEM’s are a no go with the Jurassic side of the band. I dont care. Im at the back in my own world and have told them to to just get on with it, it doesn't involve me now. I run the sound as such, but i dont sing so monitoring is down to them to sort out. -

I came across this video earlier, and found it quit interesting. Also a very interesting bit at the end about videoing a gig -
Ok, i expect this is old news to some, but i was just going through the Legend section in Roland Cloud and clicked on this one. I had a JV1080 decades ago but cant remember much about it. Im not sure if i ever even looked at the XV-5080 back then, i know it would have been waaaay out of my price range. But here we are, almost every Roland sound id ever want is in it, plus sounds id never thought i would hear again. I appreciate it’s a digital simulation and probably not an exact replica, but as i have nothing to compare it too it sounds fantastic and will be more than up to the job. Just spent the past hour playing every song in our set list with just the one preset, and im blown away. Obviously i need to use more, but for Piano’s and strings, this thing is the nuts. I now need to sit down and really get to grips with MainStage and get my controller programmed. It looks like the MODX (which i really love) is now on its way out. I plan on getting a 73 or 76 key controller to use with MainStage, but for now the 61 key is fine.

Yeah. I've always believed that drivers do loosen up over time, but ive never heard a noticable difference with any of my headphones or speakers. -

From what ive read, burning them in is just a speeded up process. Gets the drivers loosened up quicker as you burn them in for a long period. Not convinced it's a real thing these days though. -
MacBook Pro. Soooo much musical potential, especially MainStage. All the sounds i could ever need. If not that, Roland Fantom 06. Pure 80’s indulgence 😁

It’s to keep the crowds under control and people safe. Blame the amount of people that descend on this small part of london. The authorities most certainly do take everything in to consideration but maybe musicians need to as well. It’s not a new system.

I live by the OXO tower. Thats bang smack in the middle of london. We cant really to gig on NYE as although we can get the car full of gear out, we cant get home. Real pain in the ass

Cheers. I’ll have a listen while im at the gym.

Having recently got the Roland Cloud, ive been messing around with the various Roland synths, and while the JP8 is of course much more versatile, i keep going back to the Juno60. It’s simple, can sound fat (as you say, due to the chorus) and has loads of those classic 80’s sounds, but in reality not many different sounds. It just gets the 80’s vibe. I guess what i meant above was that they all have classic 80’s sounds, all with a common core sound (at least to my ears), certainly the Roland filters have a character you can hear in all of them, but compared to the software versions the hardware synths lack a lot. With the Cloud version of the JP8 i can now have the Juno chorus, or any other FX, which elevates it above the original IMO. Ive always looked on Oberheims as more a rock band synth. Other than the obvious Van Halen and Rush, it just seems the Americans used them more than the bands from the UK. When i was using AUM i found i used OBX way more than the Roland stuff.

I use a MODX, so yeah, I’ve used Soundmondo a lot. Loads of duplicate sounds on there though. I first tried it with the DX, but never really found much I could use. Mostly tweaks of the presets which I had no use for. Like I said, it’s not the synth itself, it’s the type of Sound’s available and the use I needed them for. Then again, when I compare the MODX FM to the DX, there is just no comparison, so again, no need to keep the DX.

Yeah, I know what the JP8 goes for, and i do regret getting rid of it now, but it was 25+ years ago so i wont worry too much. I had a flight case for the JP8 that took 2 people to carry it, as the handles were on either end, and the case weighed more than the keyboard. It just wasnt practice to keep it. Plus the XLR outs had a hiss that was audible when going through the PA. I still think the JP4/6/8 and Juno’s sound a bit bland and are limited compared to what even free VST’s can do these days, but they do have a few classic sounds that instantly transport me back to the 80’s
