1.
Dave there is nothing cheap looking about this bass i can assure of that or i would not have purchased it in the first place , great attention to detail on this bass for sure , the edges of the fret board have been rounded of with the binding, the binding goes 1/2 an inch past the nut, there was a great attention made to the neck on this bass i feel, the finish on the body is second to none with a slight sparkle going through the metallic paint. ceramic noisless jazz pickup and vintage precision pickups, Eq is very nice too massive amount of tone on this bass it really can do any sound that you want on a bass, i am just to used to Rickenbackers after over 30 years of playing nothing but rics. if you dont buy mine get one before they disappear only 150 for europe. cheers George
Thanks for the reply. To be honest ive never heard the 70's MIM described as cheap either but i felt the binding was. I'd love this bass but im really not in a position right now to buy it.
Big section on Talkbass about these, loads of info. Going to bed cos I'm an old git, hence no link yet
Yeah, been reading al that this afternoon. Just wish i had a few more gigs in to make me feel a bit more positive about a new bass.
2. Oh my, this is the first green bass I've ever liked the look of, and like is way to mild. I've never seen this model before. Can anyone tell me about the blocks and binding. Is it cheap and plasticky like on the MIM 70's Jazz? I felt the MIM's binding was horribly cheap looking and it really put me off that bass. Cheers.
3. Exacly my thoughts. Good for a while but i soon get tired of them (or miss rounds). I do like using chromes for recording though. Other than easier to play i dont sound quite as messy as i do live.
4.
May I humbly disagree? I'm in an originals band now, but my previous covers bands certainly stood me in good stead for it.
Same here. Ive learnt a lot of styles by having to learn covers. We've had quite a few threads about people not turning up to auditions, or turning up unprepared, lets hope this doesn't happen here eh?
5.
Retirement home gigs are an expanding market!
People are dying to get in to them
6.
Not really sure who, other than the folks in a retirement home, would want to listen to those songs. I would pass on that.
Most of those songs go down really well at parties, social clubs (ok, you were close) and pubs. No, not my fav's either but im just reporting what my own eyes see. I too can take or leave a lot of our set but i wouldn't dream of becoming a bedroom player because of a few songs that i dont enjoy as much as the majority of our set. Gigging has too many plus points that outweigh the minus for me, although i have a tolerance level a bit higher than most by the look of it. I'd also say to the OP that with 9 basses sitting around i'd be itching to get out and use them as they were intended, but maybe he is just a collector.
7. Ive got a set, i put them on a bass every now and then and love how they feel. I do think they are closer to a dead round wound than the traditional Flats tone but i like that. I do look on them as a sort of halfway house, still got the music in them but nice and smooth to play. I do tend to go back too rounds after a few weeks/months though, i miss the overtones etc, When i feel in a flats mood i either put the Chromes on or a set of TI's that i also keep handy. This saves me money as in the past i'd take them off and sell them, only to return to them the following year.
8. First off i put a Fender vintage (BBOT) on my P, but now both have Gotoh 201's on them. No re drilling needed. With the centre hole lined up the others were almost perfectly aligned.
9.
As I explained in one of my earlier posts taping was always way too much hassle for it ever to be a serious threat, as anyone who tried to record off the radio or make copies of their mates LPs in the 70s and 80s will know.
Cant say i found that myself, and i did a lot of it. I'd also say that illegal downloading isnt as wide speared as its made out. I dont know many people personally that knows how to do it and where to get it from. In fact i'd say its even more hassle than sticking a tape recorder in front of a radio.
10. I thought the Home taping is killing music era proved that this is not the case. Several generations later the music industry is still going, its just that most aren't making stupid amounts of money out of it, The industry needs to change and adapt to the new technology, and find a way to make paying and getting music easier and cheaper, they will never stop illegal downloading.
11.
if I have to learn a cover song, for my band, that there is no way in the world I would want to buy it for my own listening pleasure I generally download it for nothing, learn it then forget about it, and it just sits on my laptop forever and never gets played again.
Exactly what i do. I know i probably shouldn't but its too easy not to do it this way.
12. If the Squier is a CV then the holes do line up ok. Ive changed the bridges on both my Squier's without the need to re drill.
13. Thanks but according to the rules you are supposed to post them here if you have them. I'll pass anyway. Not sure what the cost from Greece is but I expect it would take it out of my price range. Good luck with the sale.
14. Just a heads up, its not a 70s Jazz, its a 60s Jazz. Great bass, i have one. Congrats on the new arrival as well :-)
15. Same here, although my drummer (who does the driving) has also told me im not allowed another cab as it wont fit in the car :-(
16. I reaslie there is no real volume gain but even so, i cant see why you wouldnt want to get the most out of the amp, if nothing else wouldnt you get a bit more headroom? Of course the cab need so be able to handle it, but ive never found my 4ohm cab to struggle.
17.
Perhaps, but the point is that this lower power level will result in a negligible difference in the actual output heard from the cab. So for a given voltage output (say for arguments sake, just below clipping) the 8 Ohm cab will be presenting a kinder load than the 4 Ohm cab. For instance a typical 500W @4 Ohm SS amp will perhaps be able to give around 300W at 8 Ohm. If the the two cabs are otherwise identical, the 8 Ohm cab will hardly be any less louder than the 4 Ohm Cab - if at all. Adding more speakers gives more additional output, based on my experience.
We are talking about just a one cab soloution, so wouldnt getting the most out of the amp be preferable in this case?
18. When i had my last HW-1 Jazz, and stopped using it i put the BAII bridge on my Squier CV Jazz for a whiel. I dont like the HM Squier bridges so that was the reason. When i sold the HW i put the bridge back on it and got a Gotoh 201 for the CV. I felt the Gotoh made a very, very small difference, in that the bass sounded a bit warmer, less sparkle i guess, but other than that no other difference. I do prefer the look of the Gotoh over the BA, so i have a 201 on both my basses now. Yes, the BAII is over priced, but if you like it then i guess its worth it.
19. Yes, my 1212L. As i said, its probably more to do with the stages we were playing on. I did a couple of Marquee gigs and did have to turn the low up past 12 o'clock for those but i also felt i was running out of clean tone as the clipping lights were flashing away.
20. I too use a Gramma pad, and it did help. When i was researching the Streamliner i came across a lot fo people saying they have the low knob at about 9-10 o'clock. I thought it was strange that so many people were backing the low end off but after getting mine i realised why they were doing it. Its very powerful. I expect paired with the right cab its just fine but i didnt find it to be as tight or focused as with my MB heads. I had decided to go back to MB and was going to do a straight swap with Clarky for his MB F1. i took both out on a weekends worth of gigs, used one per set over two nights and decided the F1 was more adaptable in the venues we played. I could get the tone i wanted a lot quicker, almost by leaving the MB EQ set flat. What also surprised me was i liked the tone of the Streamliner as well so ended up keeping both for a while. It took me a few more gigs to decided that while i liked the tone i could get from the Streamliner it was a lot of hard work in some of the venues we play, as they have horrible hollow stages and even the Gramma pad couldn't help the Streamliner much.
21. Actually i think ive given miss information here. I had forgot we were talking Jazz pick ups, in my previous post i was talking about P pick ups (as i stated). Ive never tried the Fender Jazz Originals, just the P version so sorry if that confused anyone. I do have Wizard 74's in my Jazz and do prefer them over the 84's i originallyhad. They are close to a vintage tone but with a bit more kick in the low mids. The bass they are in is a bit warm so i wanted something less warm and round, and more like my old HW-1 Jazz. With the 84's i felt they were too dark sounding, still had that warm round tone but with a deeper low end. The 74's that Andy made for me were just right. Brighter than the 84's and with a bit more growl, but not over the top brightness. Ive not tried the 64's.
22.
I couldn't get a sound I liked with the Streamliner. Too big down low, to unfocusedd in the mids.
Same here, even with my mid heavy cab. Actually IIR it was your video that sold me on it in the first place lol. I quickly went back to MarkBass.
23. I started off with a iRig but found that to be a bit noisy so now use a Apogee JAM. It costs a lot more but its a much better way of doing it IME.
