1. Can i ask how it went? a band i know are also booked to play this venue next week and are a bit concerned. cheers.
2. Well I considered myself a bass player before I got my first bass. I decided I wanted to play bass as it looked easier than guitar so I went and got one and I was then the bass player. Of course I wasn't a good one, then and now, but from the moment I wanted to play bass I was a bass player.
3.
Seeing posts by multi instument players, it got me to thinking....... When do you consider yourself a player? Personally, it is when I can play with my eyes shut. I can do that on a guitar (electric or acoustic) and an electric bass. How about you?
Well i play bass in a gigging band, so i cant see what else i need to do to qualify. Im definitely not a great bass player but im out gigging with my bass and holding down the low end, i'd say thats more qualified than the bedroom bass heroes who know everything there is to know yet never get the chance to show it off.
4.
Well, it beats Mustang Sally and Alright Now I think!!
no question its a nice list to listen to but I doubt they would all fill the dance floor at a wedding though, and thats a big part of being hired.
5. Our starting price for functions with one agent is £850, although we have been known to drop it a bit if asked to get the gig. I'd rather have £150+ in my pocket that stay in on a sat night. We do much prefer weddings and parties to other gigs but they can be long days so don't always look forward to them. With our other agent it's all WMC's and he knows not to bother us for less than £400 gross, which means we each earn around £82. They aren't taxing or pressure gigs so we don't mind them, although Sony Lays enjoy them. Again, we'd rather earn than sit on our asses. We have done a coupe of weddings for free, plus my GF's 40th but these are for mates and not high pressure gigs, as we have also been guests. I like to gig so would do almost any gig as long as I broke even and it was fun, thats just me though , not the whole band, but so far we haven't been asked to do anything as low as £200.
6. Lovely bass. One day I'll have one in Blackburst.
7. I take your point John but not everyone is gigging regularly and up to a high standard in playing. A lot of people just learning would kill to play for free, its a gig after all and thats what we all enjoy doing, but very hard to come by when you dont have any contacts/band etc. I wouldn't expect anyone on here to take it but i have seen some "bass players" videos that show just having a bass and being able to fret a few notes does make you a good bass player, far from it. Imagine if someone like that turned up to a rehearsal a couple of weeks before a booked gig. Im pretty sure that band are covering their backs. The reply said at least two so they aren't insisting on 4, just seem to be saying it could take 4. Im not saying its a great gig, just that they dont deserve to be the subject of criticism just because they might not be up to some peoples standard. Not aimed at anyone directly but there is a lot of talk but no walk on BC these days. Having seen members bands footage i dotn think this band is any worse. These sort of threads never used to be so common a few years ago. shame. Thats my thoughts anyway. Take it or leave it but do some really have to be so critical and mock the band?
8. I still think their main problem is the use of the word "dep". That to me conjures up a professional player who does this for money, and of course wouldn't for £50. I think if they had used the word stand in, or temp bass player the might not have alienated so many people and this thread would probably be a lot shorter. I used to dep for £150 per gig myself and was the only one that seemed to learn the songs properly, I think the guys reply was pretty spot on, but i know people on here like to pick things apart, word by word because they are better than those who are still trying to make a go of it.
9. You can get strips of the foam they use from Studiospares, its called Platfoam IIR.
10. I remember doing a rehearsal in a council flat in south London years ago. It was right in the middle of an estate, right in the middle of a block. Full band rehearsal with loud drummer. The owner/tenant had even turned the kitchen in to a control room for recording purposes. Glad i wasn't one of his neighbours.
11.
but if I got a guitar out the Jazz police would be round before I'd tuned it.

Would the Gramma Pad help?
Maybe even just putting the cab on a bed might help.
12. Im the same. Ive never been able to use a amp at home. In fact we dont even have a sub for our home cinema set up :-( I have heard putting a paving stone underneath might help but its not something ive ever tired (or fancied carrying).
13. Blimey, thats a fantastic price. Ive just put a P-Retro in mine and that alone cost £180. This add should be P-retro for sale, with free bass lol Good luck with it.
14. I believe it stops the slight low end boost you normally get when turning the tone knob all the way down. Have a look here http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=&topic_number=530447
15.
If that was the case how do you imagine that anyone knew that they had a 4 piece horn section - or were an eight-piece band, it's not in the OP.
Fair enough, sorry i missed your post earlier.
16. It seems that no one has bothered even checking the band out. If anyone bothers to check the link out there are some video's of them playing, id be happy to play with this lot.
17. I'd do it if it was local. I enjoy playing and would love to play that set list. I know the money is rubbish but id rather be out playing that night and breaking even than sitting in watching bloody TV. "If" they were a large band then the rehearsal cost wouldn't be much, and if they need it whats the problem? Im sure they are just asking for someone to stand in, it wouldnt have to be a professional dep (they wont get one for that money anyway). Whose to say how good a "dep" will be. He/she could well be pants and be the worst player in the room. Im sure there are many players out there that would be up for it, only to be out of their depth. A real good player wont want to know, so that leaves those who maybe aren't. I'd certainty not want to go on stage without rehearsal if thats the case.
18.
She might not approve of the groupies?
yeah, i should be so lucky ;-)
19. Because i want to unwind, maybe grab something to eat, watch a bit of TV when i get in, not chat or be told its late and we should go to bed (to sleep, nothing else). Im not knocking her, just that i like to be left along when i get in, especially if ive been travelling for a few hours.
20. Mine is when i get home and my GF says "hi, i thought i would wait up for you". Gets me every time :-(
21.
Is the Wooten slap thing really boring? Or, is it me being grumpy?
Like watching paint dry, only more disappointing, same goes for Jaco. Both fantastic players, no doubt about it, but they send me top sleep when i hear them "noodling" out of a band/song context.
22. Can you smuggle back a MarkBass F500 for me please ;-)
23. This wire is to go in a P-Retro so i needed it longer than the stock length that just went to the old jack socket.
24. Thanks BB. I ended up getting way to much but it only cost me 99p from the bargain bucket so i cant complain.
