Played my first wedding gig (oh, and got married too!)
dave_bass5 replied to mingsta's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, congrats on a great performance and on getting hitched. -
I see no need to ever get another P bass, expect for looks (still fancy another Duck Dunn). My CVP is a P bass, sounds and plays like a P bass and cost less than any other bass ive owned in recent times. Sometimes i feel people get too wrapped up in all this vintage/boutique lark and spend £1000's to get a tone that can be achieved at a fraction of the cost.
So it's illegal to copy music, copyright infringement applies to instruments, but it's okay to copy an amp sound - say which amp it's meant to sound like - then sell it? Confused?
Do you know that the companies doing so aren't paying royalties or a licence fee to use the names? Who are you talking about?

Can anyone help with this? Getting so frustrated.
dave_bass5 replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Good thread. This is the one song (well, main one) that I've never been able to nail properly. We've been playing it for years and it sounds fine, but it's always bugged me that I can't sit down and work the notes out. It's not that I wouldn't be able to, it's more that i just can't seem to find a reason other than wanting to without a need to. Good luck with it. -

Very unhappy with Ernie Ball Cobalt strings
I tried a set when they were first released into the market and the freshness dropped off quickly for me too. First impressions last and I will never use them again.
Same here. Very bright when they went on, two gigs later they sound quite different. In my case I don't dont sweat or play particularly hard, and it's not usual for my strings to loose their tone so quickly. Saying that, I'm not really giving them a negative because of this, I felt tey were a bit too bright to start with so I was a bit relieved they lost some of that. For me it's just the fundamental tone I don't like and I've taken them off to keep as spares. For reference dive put some year old DR Black Beauies back on and I much prefer these, at least tone wise. This is my second failed attempt at using EB stings so I think I'll give up trying now. -
I remember getting a Fender Deluxe double gig bag a few years ago. Of course it was bloody heavy with two basses in it but what got me was the position of the metal clasps on the straps. Nearly cracked my Collar bone.

Your preaching to the converted on here. These CV's and MF basses seem to punch a step or three above thier price range. A nice black MF is one I will own one day. As much as I love playing my fiesta red CV I really don't like the colour. Call me boring but I prefer black or white basses. For me it's the necks that make these basses. I don't know about the MF but the CV's have vintage frets. I just love this size of fret and to get such nice necks at this price is amazing. I don't really like P necks so I have a Lakland neck on my P but I still prefer the CV jazz neck, if only they did maple jazz necks. Enjoy your bass and welcome to BassChat

Glad it almost went well Mike. The more you do the more confident and relaxed you become . I've been playing BEG for almost 10 years now and my singer still gets those bits wrong 50% of the time. Luckily we mange to cover it up. As John says, just wait until you find any gaps in the arrangements getting filled with guitar licks/solos. It'll drive you mad lol.

The most mis-attributed song on the internet?
dave_bass5 replied to spinynorman's topic in General Discussion
I was surprised to find the Bay City Rollers Bye Bye Baby was a cover, also Toploaders Dancing in the Moonlight. -
Im a bit worried about their customer service to be honest...only because of a few horror stories.
I too have brought loads from them. They might not be the cheapest these days but i have found their customer service second to none, and i mean none over here. I think the Sandbergs are nice instruments but dont like the look of the plain necks. I dont NEED the dots but i like them where they should be. The customs have blocks and they look much nicer IMO.

There are plenty of these for sale in Tottenham, north London as well. More skanky though

Sharing info on good venues : poll attached
dave_bass5 replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
I always thought/hoped the How was your gig thread would have some good venue info in ti but it never really went far enough. Im all up for naming, and if necessary shaming a venue. If it gets taken seriously enough maybe venue owners will take note. Saying that, i'd personally be more interested in function venues (sound meters, gits running the place etc) as opposed to pubs, mainly as we dont play pubs, although we might one day. -
Dave that DJ5 PJ is still a looker!
Thanks. It hurts to be reminded of that one. Stupid mistake selling it.
probably get slagged off for saying this, but, I would rather go and see a good tribute playing in the local pub, free admission decent beer nice and dry, than pay £100 to stand in a wet cold field or a massive arena with crap sound , with about 50000 other people watching the original thing from about half a mile back. I agree with a couple of posts on here, the secret is not to take youself to serously, saw a stones tribute once and 'Brian Jones' came on wearing angels wings, brilliant
Definitely. I used to be a huge Bon Jovi fan back in the late 80'-90s. Ive seen them maybe 5-6 times in the Arena's. Each time there seemed to be less and less effort put in, and the main part of the set was more to promote the new album. Last time i saw them was Hyde park a good few years ago. They wore t-shirts and jeans, hardly moved around and played most of the current new album (that was no more than soft country/Ballard stuff IIR). Two weeks later i saw a band called By Jovi. They played all the hits, looked like the band at the height of their popularity and it cost £5 to get in. Same thing with the Stones. Sod paying £100 just to see them spend most of the night jamming (and with more backing musicians than are in the actual band). Ive seen the Counterfeit Stones many times and always thought they put on a better show, and at a fraction of the cost. So yes, IMO Tribute acts, even if the real act are still going, have a place and as long as they do it well and entertain i dont see the problem.

What a great collection of basses in this thread. I cant believe i haven't posted in here yet. Although i dont own them any more all my Lakland's have been great, and i will own another one day. I'd love to know who has these now. Ive seen the 55-01 on here recently but lost track of the DJ and DD's (ive had two, or three including one i did send back to Thomanns)

I think seeing yourself perform can be a real eye opener. I hate seeing me play (i tend to stand there looking bored a lot of the time) but thankfully we dont get many gigs videoed. It does give em food for thought and i do try a bit more to move around but sometimes when the audience are just sitting there (social clubs) its difficult to feel motivated. We do audio record almost every gig though, and the bass is always prominent, although it never seems like that at the gigs. We strap a digital recorder to the singers mic stand and this gets us a pretty decent recording. This really helps me as i can hear what i played, and keeps me on my toes as i know the rest of the band will hear it.

This looks great. It might be the answer im looking for in my gig bag thread (other than the price). Ill have to have a look in to this bag but for what its worth ive laid my bass down on various surfaces, i dont really think about it too much but i do tend not to like leaning it against things that might get bumped, causing the bass to fall. Saying that i do tend to stand the gig bag upright to un zip it most of the time but i have taken the bass out on its side many times as well.

Bugger, can't believe I spelt it wrong after all this time. The Matt Freeman would be my choice if buying again. Love the maple necks.
-
Probably worth using the search function as there are loads of threads about the Squires. For what its worth i love my CV's and cant see me needing to replace them at any time in the near future. I wish the CV came in the same finish as the Affinity, i hate the CVP colours.
I'm sure you'll be fine appearance wise - apart from a couple of places our audience isn't yet entirely made up of be-quiffed pyschobillies!
I was talking more about the fact that I like to go to gigs naked lol. Stu, spot on. Another situation where any old camera won't do. I get the feeling those flashes going off are people using their cameras on full auto, rather than purposely.

Nice one. The Shoreditch is within walking distance for me so ill aim for that. Any week days are fine (as things stand at the moment) so ill keep an eye out for date changes. Looking forward to it, although i think ill stick out like a sore thumb lol.

Definitly the right way to shoot a band. I can't believe people use flash at gigs. Pointless and if anything it desstroys the atmosphere. You gigs always look so exciting. Not many bands seem to make the effort these days. I guess the image fits the music. I'd love to shoot you guys if you play in my neck of the woods. In fact if anyone is gigging in central london or just outside it I'd be happy to come along and try my hand at gig photography. Free of course. EDIT: Oops, typo in first word. Corrected.

Looking for a gig bag with full length shoulder strap
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
Thanks Dr M. Ive had one and while it did indeed hang low it was quite painful to wear, as the metal clasp sits right on the shoulder bone. Heres the one i have (excuse the stupid look, im not used to having my pic taken).
