1. I think Sat mornings are the best time to go if you just want to relax or have a slow walk. It seems to be less tourists and more people going about their business if that makes scene. By late morning it will be heaving if the sun is out.
2.
The Met Office is forecasting a max temp of 22 degrees and a sunny, windy day. We should be all right.
So snow and sub zero temps then ;-) There has been quite a bit of work done on the Southbank over the past week. Watch this space now has its turf put down, along with the huge couch and arm chair, there is also a new bar called The Propstore (IIR) that opens tomorrow, as well as what looks liek a new bar up above Watch this space, quite a few new sculptures up by the QE hall and a few more bits or "art" scattered around. It was very busy yesterday after work, Sat will be even worse so i think meeting at the roof garden will be a good idea as its out of the way.
3. By that i mean if i click on the "You can unsubscribe at any time here" link in email alerts on my iPhone or iPad i get a thread not found error. I can do it on my PC and of course can use the unfollow button at the top of the threads. Not the end of the world but thought i would mention it.
4.
Oh I see Dave, I thought you meant you couldn't get there till late. But you were talking about the recce with bluejay. I'll shut up now as I'm just confusing the issue!
Haha, yeah, i was talking about during the week.
5.
I'm happy to hang on until later as long as some others are up for it. Who have we got coming now? Looking back at this thread it seems we are expecting: Brummie ras52 BigJim Billyapple Plus us 2 girls and hopefully Dave in the early evening. Also there is a rumour that discreet might put in an appearance! Doesn't seem a huge amount so far... any other takers out there??
Ill be there at the start but have a sound check at 3pm over in Hayes so will need to head off around 2 unfortunately.
6. That cool. I guess its better to head off before the rush hour starts and the place starts getting busy. If i can find it ill bring along my Orange BC tee shirt (the one that shrunk before i got to wear it ;-), we could maybe drape it on a chair or table so others can find us.
7. Good idea. The forecast does look promising for this coming weekend. Its typical that i have an early gig no Sat and working from 6am all day Sunday :-( If you are down there around 6-ish i could meet up with you as i finish work around 5.30.
8. Im up for the South bank area. If its a nice day we could even go up to the roof garden above the QE hall. Just look for the yellow staircase. Be warned, the drinks are not cheap so its advisable to bring your own.
9. +2 to the above. Copydex works a treat. Short term fix, take the dust cap off (bearing in mind what Phil said) until you get around to fixing it.
10.
Sorry thats just silly. Try going out without a drum kit or guitar amp. That would effect everyone in the band too but nobodys suggesting that we all chip in for a new drum kit etc. I want to re-iterate that all we are trying to do is find the most equitable solution for us and i am open minded to suggestions. I do recognise a theme that there seems to be a "special status" accorded to the PA for some of you but not others. Thanks for all the positive contributions so far.
Thats just twisting what i said. I was just trying to point out that the band needs the PA, its not just the singers domain. I assume you play music through it? What happens when you play a venue that needs the kick drum or back line mic'ed up? Ive also seen plenty of bands without a drummer and/or guitarist but never one without a PA unless they also dont have vocals.
11. Im in complete agreement with the last two posts. Will people be basing how much they have spent on their own gear to get a discount off the cost of the PA. It can easily get out of hand. I really dont get the im all right jack mentality. Try going out without a PA and see if it effects all of you in the band. If it does that shows its the whole bands responsibility, at least as for FOH.
12. Maybe the bands I've been playing with recently are different but when we do a function/ wedding etc we have to supply background music, even first dances off iPod or CD. This isn't the singers job, the band have agreed to supply this service and it would sound crap though a bass or guitar amp so the band need the PA, not just the singer. Just saying.
13. It is nice there isn't it. I love walking from just beyond Tower bridge, all the way up to Vauxhall bridge. You hardly leave the river path. I'm happy to meat there, in fact it's better for me than one of the parks, due to having to shoot off faily early. Another suggestion if it's raining might be the Royal Festival hall or the Queen Eleizebeth II hall hext door Plenty of room in there and there is a wonderful outdoor balcony at the top of the RFH that overlooks the Thames. It's part of the building so is covered and it's attached to a fairly quiet seating area. There is a lot going on, or rather up, in this part of the Southbank at the moment. Getting ready for the summer festivals. It's also pretty close to Waterloo station.
14. I think if the whole band pay equal shares then those who want to use it away from full band gigs should hire it at an agreed fee.
15. Never found this sort of thing to be a problem, maybe I've been lucky We have always paid equal amounts in to the and for lights and PA. if anyone leaves we will offer what we consider a fair amount, based on the resale value divided by the number of band members. I've never looked on the PA as just being for the singer, we play background music through it, mic the kick drum and it's needed for a backing vocals so it's quite integral to the band. I dont pay towards anyone's mic leads, mics etc, thats down to them to supply their own gear. I have thought about this in the past, and sometimes I've started to feel a bit resentful that I have paid towards the PA as well as buying my own gear but if you start trying to count and justify every penny it can lead to even more problems IME. It's the bands PA, it's something we all need so it's all our responseability. EDIT: Sorry, just noticed the duo bit. That does complicate things a bit. Two of my band started going out as a duo with CD's. Never asked about using "our" PA, even used the same name and I did feel some resentment. Unlike the rest of you I was a bit childish and started taking home any leads or adapters that I had personally brought, including the one for the monitor, and being the one who normally sets up the PA I would not take their calls on gig days. I have grown up now but I felt If they were using our gear and not offering any money, or even asking, then I was not going to just be walked over like that.
16.
to which the drummer repiled, thats ok, I play louder when we start... WTF...!!!!
My drummer is always like that. In fact the whole band (other than me) are. We never seem to sound check at a normal playing level. In fact if anything the guitarist turns down once we start playing.
17. I was once told by the sound guy (up on the next floor) my radio system was a bit noisy through their large PA. Never had any problems before but i had a lead with me so fair enough. Once i had changed to using the (20ft) lead the sound guy told me "thats much better, come up here and have a listen" lol.
18.
Yet still less cocks than another, lesser known bass site...
fixed it for you ;-)
19.
Hooray! I spent some time on another well known bass forum yesterday, I didn't like it....
I spent time on Pornhub......I quite liked it. A few more cocks than on here, but only just
20. My boss asked me to pass on her thanks for letting me do half a days work yesterday. Ive just told her normal service has now been resumed and to shut the door on the way out. Good work guys.
21. Years ago i was in some sort of new wave/punk/crap band, not my cup of tea but ti was something to do. Singer wasnt great, me on bass with about 7 FX boxes and young drummer who was madly in love with Killing Joke. We needed a guitarist and after seeing a couple of good players (who i would have loved to work with outside that band) in walks a guy that had the image down 100%. Punk hair, make-up, clothes the lot. He pulls out this strange looking angular guitar, plugs in and there was this noise, not too dissimilar from a KJ riff but not in tune in any way. All he was doing was making this barking noise by muting all the strings and whacking them. Our songs did have tunes but after about 5mins we stopped playing and i asked him if he was actually in tune, and if not did he want to borrow my tuner. This was met with a very vacant stare. He then explained he had never tuned the guitar up since he had it, he only got it because it looked the part and that he cant actually play the guitar. The drummer, who by this time had decided this was THE guitarist for us proceeded to show him how to tune the guitar up. One by one each tuning peg was turned, and each was met with a twang and a rusty string breaking. This was a god send as it gave us our excuse to say "we will give you a call" and get rid of him. We ended up getting a mate in as we all knew him and his playing style fitted in. Funny thing is, two weeks later the drummer left the band to form a new one, you can guess who with lol. Never seen again.
22. Sims would be my first port of call if I couldn't find something off the shelf.
23. I use a DELL laptop bag for my MB F1.Its got very thick padding at both ends of the main compartment and also along the bottom. I can get the head, radio system and all leads in it. I dont like bags that are bigger than needed, or with straps and pockets hanging off the side etc. It cost me £10 from PC World from their bargain bucket and its very compact.
24.
complained with refined, casual resignation about having "17 bloody guitars at home" and now "he had one more of the bloody things".
some people just get dealt an unlucky hand. Poor sod.
25.
Ta. I actually quite like them. Used in anger at a gig last Friday doing classic rocky stuff, and Sunday at a r/h with the Country/Americana band mainly using the P pup in the Tanglewater and the basic rig with no effects (ie bass, lead, GB STM 6.0 & Barefaced Super12T) and the whole thing was sounding pretty damn good and got a load of compliments at the gig, including "it's better than the red one, solid & well defined" (the red one being the US G&L L2500 with an older set of Elixirs on). It'll be interesting to see what the longevity is like, but if it is as good as the Elixirs, and the price was right (ie around £30 for a 4 string set not the near £50 quoted in some places) I could be tempted to try them on the L2500's as well.
Cheers. Ive used Elixirs in the past but found them to sound a tiny bit scooped and rough feeling. I did like them though but something that lasts as long, doesn't feel quite as rough would be good, i find my Black Beauties to be too rough so i dont use them. They do seem to be priced just a little higher than the Elixirs so not too bad if they last a good few months of regular gigging.
