The IEM (in ear monitors) Bible thread
dave_bass5 replied to EBS_freak's topic in Accessories and Misc
Thinking about it, I guess I could attach a mic to each of our PA stands. That way I don’t need to worry about stands, and they will pick up all the vocals centred. -

Totally get that, but in my current case it’s irrelevant as both mics would be placed next to each other. Maybe one day I’ll be able to set them up either side of the stage, but that’s a long way down the line. Maybe keeping the ambient mic in mono will help keep things from sounding weird. -

I can get the kit, but im wondering if it will make much difference considering where the mic’s will be placed. Most gigs im just in the corner so although i know in ears it will sound more open, i wont be getting a. Proper stereo spread. Just more things to set up. -

Just had a rehearsal with my IEM’s and I’m over the moon with them. Having tried using them over the past two years, it all dropped in to place once I set an ambient mic up. What a difference!!! it sounded like I was there in the room lol. it sounded ok for the first few numbers, until I realised my headphone amp was still in mono. Once I changed that setting it was exactly what Ive been looking for. I had to get a new desk, as the one I’ve been using would have sent the mic to the PA as well, but the Mackie I got has a sub group which can send to the headphones rather than FOH. Mono ambient with stereo keys sounded great, but I can’t help feel I should send the B5 back and get a par of C2’s. They would both be mounted side by side on the top of my keyboard stand so wouldn’t make a huge difference, but maybe a bit more immersive? The real test will come at the next gig, as I set up at the back next to the drummer, so not sure how much it will pick up. Not going to place them anywhere else at the moment as I don’t trust the others not to know them. -
Mine as well. Can sound great….or very funny lol. It’s quite complicated (or comprehensive) for her. Good thing is you can put whole sets in to it and step through them. She also got the mic adapter with the hit switch on it. We tried to replace it recently with one of those red Boss ones, but everywhere was out of stock for ever (or so it seemed).

Compact mixing desks - what are you using?
dave_bass5 replied to Al Krow's topic in PA set up and use
Yep, but in my case my keys have all that already. I don’t mind getting something with features i dont want, but it’s the fact that i have to get larger than i care for thats really the issue. Closest ive seen is a Behringer XENYX X1204USB, which allows the Aux to be pre or post, but its still physically larger than i care for. -

My little desk has a separate control room out, so i can send a feed directly to my P2/IEMS, and this is of course in stereo. id be happy with a mood ambient mix along with this, but there is no way to mute the output from the mic to the mains other than to have it turned down, and use the Aux sends, which means i have to use my P2 connected to the mono Aux send. Ive seen larger desks that would be more suitable, but these seem to have a lot of things i dont need, inc FX, and it just seems like a waste of money (although i am tempted still). -

This is pretty much what im finding, and it’s bloody annoying. I use a small 8 channel desk for my keys. I only use two stereo channels, i dont need all of them. I plan on using a mic for room ambience for IEM’s. With our main desk I can have this in stereo and my IEM’s/keys in stereo, but with my small desk im going to have to put it all through an mono Aux, and go down to mono, just the mic doesn't come out of the mains. Why cant they put a pre/post fade switch, a mute etc, on these small ones. All these small mixers seem to lack functions that the larger ones have, but not everyone needs a 12-16 etc channel desk. -

Yeah, i use them with my IEM’s, and my Airpod Pro’s sometimes. Very comfortable and cuts out a lot more noise than the silicon ones that ive used. -

At the moment im using this. I only need two stereo channels so cant justify anything larger. We use both sends on our main desk for the singers IEM on send 1, and the monitors for everyone else on send 2 (passed through my monitor first). https://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-Premium-Preamps-Compressors-Interface/dp/B008O517IC/ref=rvi_sccl_12/262-4384024-8480314?pd_rd_w=LFtnf&content-id=amzn1.sym.febd3956-4d60-4288-b8f2-cb468eb6674d&pf_rd_p=febd3956-4d60-4288-b8f2-cb468eb6674d&pf_rd_r=GZ0077Z79ZXVPR9HF9HG&pd_rd_wg=nr7gd&pd_rd_r=169da155-0a2b-45ed-9a0a-e35ff1e37b3f&pd_rd_i=B008O517IC&psc=1 -

Cheers. No, my mixer wont make use of a stereo feed. While i can use both and pan accordingly, I’ll have to use the mono FX sends to send the signal to my P2, so it will all have to go down to mono. Normally id use the control room stereo outs to the P2, but the only way i have of not sending the mic’s input to our main desk is this way. Not ideal, but im more interested in hearing how it works. I can build on it from there if it does the job. Still undecided about IEM’s. I’ll probably get the B5 anyway, as that seems more versatile. -

Cheers Russ. I was looking at the C2 earlier and it does seem to be ideal. It seems to come as a pair though and i only require one. I’ll have a look around and see what esle is available for that price. Good advice though, and yes, the SM58 seems to be very much not suitable. -

I know this isn’t strictly an IEM question, but I’d like to set a mic up on stage to feed my small mixer, and in turn hopefully get a bit of it in my IEM’s, so I dont feel too isolated. Has anyone got any suggestions? Must be cheap, at least to see if it works with my mixer etc. I do have spare SM58’s but I’m not sure those are ideal for capturing the sound. I guess more what type than anything specific. -

Should just add that we use a stereo FOH mix, and although the stereo spread is quite narrow, my keyboards sound better. Less phasing than when summed to mono and, of course those 80’s sequences sound better when panned. -

I just clapped with mine in. Didn’t notice any latency. -

Well it does if you are watching movies on them. Can’t say I’ve ever seen any lip sync issues doing this with mine. I do sometimes put them in at rehearsals just to use the ANC side of them, and this does work well. -

I really wish i could use my AirPod Pro’s as IEM’s. They have such a great transparency mode. I know i can, in theory, but the latency would mean its not a good idea. -

One other thing about using a P2, which might not be relevant to most, is that you can have a stereo mix if the desk allows this. This is the only reason I never got a wireless system for my IEM’s. -

The one we have was a Sub Zero IIR. The sound was ok but it quite often just didn’t connect to the receiver. The Xvive has been much better, although on more than one occasion it has clashed with the guitarists Xvive. That’s just user error though and because he was pushing buttons he had not right to. I’ve got a P2 and it works really well, being fed from my small desk, but I only have me in the mix. I do much prefer using a monitor as it keeps things in perspective and also gives everyone on stage something to hear. Currently I’m looking to get a QCS K8.2 to get things a bit more compact, but do always have my IEM’s with me just in case. -

Just a generic one from G4M. It worked fine some of the time, but we ended up taking a monitor with us as quite often it wouldn’t be solid enough to rely on. That things cost more than the Xvive. -

Dawn uses then in my band. Does the job and a lot less hassle than the UHF set up she used to have. -

Cheers. Yes, that what I’m thinking of doing this weekend, but I’d like to use something a bit more reliable. Im worries I might end up with them falling out completely. I normally use Comply foam Tips but dug out the original silicone ones that came with my IEM’s. They definitely let in more ambient if I have them loose, but that feels a bit uncomfortable. I was looking at the Westones but can’t seem To find them in the UK (haven’t looked too hard though). -

I’ve not used my IEM’s for ages. I just didn’t get on with the isolation I was getting from them. I now want to start using them again. This is for keys and just for my personal monitoring. The band aren’t going IEM anytime soon (although the singer does occasionally) Anyway, what I’m here to ask is about IEM’s with an ambient feature. I think that would be a good compromise. Im aware that the low end will take a hit, but at least I will feel part of the music. Anyone using this type? Recommendations? Needs to be cheap-ish. I’ll still use a floor monitor for gigs where I have space for it, but for others I want to use IEM. Just running through a headphone amp so not wireless. I’m aware that I can run an ambient mic to feed my mixer, but at the moment im just asking about the IEM’s. -

I guess sometimes it the luck of the drawer. Before that we were using a nice Yamaha desk but after a couple of years the power connector fell out. For a few months before that it was intermittent.
