Compact mixing desks - what are you using?
dave_bass5 replied to Al Krow's topic in PA set up and use
Not my experience at all. Ive had this desk since about 2014 and it’s done loads of gigs (well over 100), plus i use it at home for my keyboards connected to my computer. Dead quite. I do find the USB to be a bit noise as there is no pre amp/EQ on it, but ive only tried it a couple of times. -

I've been using a Behringer Xeynx X2222USB for years. Its fairly simple, as in you don’t need anything to control it, but does have 2 sends per channel and an FX send (FX built in). -
Nice one Russ. I have no idea what the original sounds like but i enjoyed . Very tight playing all round 👍

I ended up sending them back. While i liked them, i was disappointed in two things. The noise isolation is rubbish, and my ears got hotter faster than with my m50x. Not a big deal as such, but as the blurb (and all the possible biased reviews) rave over these two points i felt the rest wasn't worth the cost. These were two of the main reasons i got it. I now have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT700 Pro X. In fact my second pair as the first had a faulty short cable and one ear kept cutting out. Still got the same issue regarding fit as with the 770, but im sure this time I’ll give them more of a chance. I’ll use the m50x still, but the 700 are much more pleasant sounding, even if they arent as bright.

Cheers. I was surprised on first listen to how different they sounded to my m50x. In a way the m50x is closer to what i hear with my keyboards through a PA, quite bright (maybe too bright), but the Rode seems to smooth thing out nicely for home playing. They will just sit on my desk, and as they are wired ill never use them with anything other than my PC/keys, so not bothered about them folding etc. Last year i had the m50x and DT770 for a while, and ended up sending the DT770 back as they made my ears get hot very quickly. I cant say ive had issues with the m50x, but so far i much prefer the fit of the Rode. Only problem i have (with both sets), is that my head is small so both are on the smallest setting. Luckily thats just right, but i do find the ear cups of the Rode to be a bit nicer.

Well, to answer my own question, they sound great. Sonically worlds apart from my AT M50x’s. Smoother and overall less fatiguing when using for long periods of time. Much more comfortable (although i dont find the M50x to be uncomfortable as such). Not so great with general music playback, as with any monitor type of headphone they can sound boring, but with my keyboard rig, and using a DAW they seem much more true to life. Ive mixed a couple of my old tracks and what i hear in these match my speakers and daily EarPods much more than with the M50x.

Ive been reading up on these and quite fancy trying them for music creation/headphone playing at home. The price seems reasonable and i like the ‘innovations’, just cant decide if they will be different in a good way to my AT M50x’s, which i love but can hear they aren't that neutral. Not asking for recommendations, just about the Rode’s specifically.

Thats why the quote you posted didnt JUST list the police. Did you read it?

Thanks Russ. Must admit im getting more confident now. Not so much the notes, but with the sounds. Its taken me almost a year to get used to the fact that the keys sound totally different through a PA. Very off putting at first. Ive gone back to using a PA cab as a monitor. I tried IEM’s and while they work fine for me, i feel too excluded from the mix. Trying to get them all to go to IEM’s as the front monitors are quite poor quality, but you know what an uphill struggle that can be. Quite enjoying have the monitor cranked up though. Me and the drummer have practically our own PA at the back of the stage. Makes for a good back up if the main one goes down,.

I took my GoPro to last nights gig. Quite pleased with how it came out. This is un edited other than trimmed in Lumafusion on my ipad. I really need to smile more.

Thought it was based on Steve Jones’s book. If its inaccurate id blame him rather than anyone else. Did Disney fund this then?
-
Same here. Until the Pistols had split up I had no interest in Punk, quite the opposite in fact.
-
Yeah. Bloody guitarist hogging all the screen time. A bit easier to see me in this one, but still off in the distance
-
Yeah, I thought that as well.

I wasnt going to post anything, but what the hell. This was our first gig, and first gig for me on keys. Unfortunately we were playing in to the sun so a bit distracted. I wasn't in the front monitors so im very quiet. The video and audio is straight out of camera, a Go Pro Max. Quite impressed with how it turned out.

Yeah, im keeping an eye for one now. The fact that it also runs on batteries is a big plus as well.

I had a play on a VR09 at the weekend. First time I’ve seen one used in a band context. Will be getting mine at the end of the month to replace my iPad set up as my second keyboard (or maybe my first). The band’s keyboard player was using just this, and other than the acoustic pianos I loved the organ/strings and brass (which being Roland are very good). He said he got it for £300 used (for a recording project, so immaculate).

I don’t have Disney+ either 😎😬

Surprised this thread stopped being active, seeing as its now streaming. Not sure how accurate it is, but im enjoying it (although its been an eye opener if it’s is all true). I didn't know it at the time, but i took a photo back in June 2021, which turns out was the set for a brief clip where ‘Pauline’ is down on the Southbank.

I wonder who will win🤔

Ive just watched it all (as much as i could) on replay. GF wanted to watch it. Tell me this, were there more than a few artists playing? It seemed to us it was the same 2 or 3 groups doing costume changes most of the time 😂
-
Well, more biased than previous years I guess. When most people can predict the score well before any songs are played it seems to make it even more of a farce than previous years……. …….not that I ever watch it when it’s on.

True but this was so obvious days before it took place.

I hated the winning song, and dont think it was a fair ‘music’ competition this year.
