1.
He clearly had a brass neck, and the mercenary instincts when it came to exploiting his contacts and making the right call at the right time. Oddly, he didn't want to join Icehouse, to do a "pub" tour, demonstrating his ignorance of the "pub" venues in Australia, which hold crowds in excess of 1,000. Those "pub" tours saw him playing top billing with band such as Simple Minds, Talking Heads and Psychedelic Furs in support slots, and directly contributed to Icehouse acquiring support slots on European tours with the likes of Simple Minds and David Bowie, and a US tour with Talking Heads.
Yeah, i read all that in the book.
2. I think the bottom line is Pratt was in the right place at the right time, lots of times, and had a face that fitted in. Thats not to take away any respect, i love his playing and style,
3.
Well, it was the 80s! Davies was at the cutting edge with technology, using the likes of Linn and Prophet in '81, and going on to use Fairlight thereafter. If you want to hear Icehouse in the 90s, although with Steve Morgan on bass, not Pratt, look for tracks from the "Code Blue" and "Big Wheel" albums.
The album i have is the White heat album and yes, the more upto date ones sound really good. I do like the 80's just wasnt aware of how much they put out back then so was taken by surprise when i put it on.
4. Oooo, topical as ive just got around to reading his book (after owning it for 2 years and never even starting it ive now only just got it on my ipad and am now getting in to it). I like his playing and am enjoying his book but not sure of him as a person. I dont actually find him funny, and think he has a bit of a cocky attitude but he seems like an interesting person. I spent all yesterday moring in bed watching some of his videos, this was my favorite (the bass off at the end made me laugh) Because of this ive also been listening to Icehouse for the first time (other than Little girl). Some of its a bit too 80's for me but on the whole i think Iva is/was a fantastic song writer.
5. Guy Pratt. I've finally got around to reading his book and am finding it quite inspiring. Also listening to Icehouse for the fisrt time because of it.
6. Cheers guys. Once I had a look on my PC I could see that I needed to scroll down but hadn't tried the two finger scroll, that works for the delete post box so thanks for the heads up on that one.
7. Actually I've just realised I'm not actually missing a ok button in the delete post box but the box is still off the page so still can't delete a post.
8. Im seeing a few issues with the above combination. First off when I first open a page it's all looks huge, it then very quickly fits itself to the screen. I have also noticed some I images ( for example my entry in this months photo comp) go off the right hand edge of the page. It's all there but extends beyond the margin of the page. Third up is I can't delete a post because the box that comes up to confirm this has the ok button off the left hand side of the page. I can't move it or get to it. Other than that its working fine 😊
9. Good to hear they worked out. The only thing I can suggest is to open the cab up and see if there is a loose connection. Personally I would want it fixed, either do it myself or get it replaced. This would be mainly to help the resale value further down the line but also it would bug the hell out of me, whether I wanted to use the horn or not.
10. Why not just get the seller to replace them. You should be covered by the law for this sort of thing.
11.
I think that, on the whole, if you've paid a lot of money for something it's human nature to convince yourself that it's made an improvement way above it's actual measurable effects.
At least with strings you're not wasting too much only, unlike those who "need" expensive basses before they will even attempt Mustang Sally ;-)
12.
It's not to glue the screws in, it's just something I do. The glue sets harder than the the wood, so next time you take the screw out and put it back in, you're not biting at the wood, there's a hardened wood glue thread. Takes 5 seconds and is something I do when working with wood and screws, often even if I don't think I'll be taking it apart.
This seems like a good idea. I have to take my Lakland neck off to adjust the truss rod so its been on and off my bass about 5-6 times recently, sounds liek a bit of wood glue will help keep things nice and tight.
13. Is this the EX version? I had one of these and loved it, especially the piano sound. quite fancy another (even though i still have a N5)
14.
Haha. OK I'll add this to the list!
Thunks ;-)
15. I dunt know if its just tis latest update but i cant seem to get the spall checker to wek on this website. Its fine on all otherz. Itz on but nufing is highligted as spul wrong. The uver thing is unless im cliking on a word the option to sill cheek isnt even there, i just get the frame menu raver than the text menu, again, dis is fine on other sites. Its not dat i ned it off corz.
16.
Might switch back to D'Addarios again. They are very reasonably priced, feel great and have a lovely perky tone. For me they are the best value bass strings.
Same here, No matter what i try i always seem to end up going back to XL's. The only reason i still have the Black beauties on my Jazz is because they look great on a white Jazz, and i dont really use it so im not fussed about not really likeing them.
17. Im the other way, im convinced expencive strings dont sound any better than cheap ones. Ive got DR Black beauties on my Jazz, and have had Neons and Elixirs and a few other £30+ sets, and whiel the coated strings were brought for thier extrneded life i still prefer XL's or, at the moment Fender 150's. Its all in the tone and feel for me. I like what i like and will pay to get it, but luckily the chepaer strings do it for me. I di dtry a set of Picato strings a few years ago and also liked them, they were very cheap IIR.
18. Ive sent a few things back to Thomann's because i didnt like them, They always foot the bill. I once had two Lakland Duck Dunns at home from Thomann's (long story) and they told me gig each one and just send back the one i didnt like. As long as you dont damage it it should be fine.
19. Get your camera out and start blogging the redevelopment :-) Oh, and good luck with it all. It does seem a very short time but the Polish guys do seem like good workers (unlike our own grown workers IME).
20. Another vote for MarkBass here. In fact i went from a wooly old ABM307 EVOII head ;-) to a SA450 and LMII and felt it was a good move. I didnt think the tone was drastically different, but the MB heads seem to have a bit more life to them. They were also louder of course. Over the years ive found my MB heads to work well with any bass ive used and ive never had to struggle with volume using just a 2x12 cab.
21. Ed's video review is now up.
22. I got one of these last year and love it. I also have a black Snark (giggady) and a much more expensive Peterson version but i prefer the PW for gigs. It stays on the bass all night and gives me something to look at on the boring gigs.
23. I know what you mean, I can't imagine any amp lacking low end in a bedroom situation, but in my very limited experience with different heads I can certainly hear differences in low end between different heads that EQ doesn't quite fix in some. Not a definciany, just a difference. I hated the low end of my GK1001RB, I felt it was thin and weedy but I know others dont. Thank god we all have so many choices.
24. While I have never played a Shuttle the one negative comment I keep reading is the lack, for some, of low end. They are obviously good, usable amps but we all like different things and some peeps just don't seem to get on with the shuttle. I've not read anything bad about the low end on the max so I guess GB are just addressing an issue based on feedback. While I agree that EQ is really just there to tweak for the venue etc every head has a certain character that I feel you have to like first. No matter how I tweaked the EQ on my Streamliner it could never sound like my F1. That's how I see it anyway.
25. I do think the MB heads just sound right with any cab I've owned. That's probably why I've never really had amp GAS. To be honest I can't ever see me getting rid of the F1, I would need to find the money from somewhere though. I've just watched Kens Streamliner vs 9.2 max head and I definitely preferred the Max tone, even though both were pretty good. I know a YT video is no way of auditioning a amp but as both were recorded under exactly the same conditions I felt I could at least hear the difference and liked what I heard. I felt the Streamliner had more of a middy tone, good, but considering I don't need any more mids I think that why it didn't quite work for me. Do we have an estimated street price on the 6.2 yet?
