1. LOL. a slapper getting praise. Whatever next
 2. I'd love to be able to dump the pick. I've been trying for a few years and while im ok with just fingers at home (in fact i never bother with a pick at home) as soon as we start the gig im back to picking. There are one or two songs i can use fingers on but i get lazy and dont. Could well be that its because we play the songs a bit too fast. I really must try harder as i love the finger tone way more than the pick tone, although both have their uses of course.
 3. Not sure about the polarity check but you could try tapping something like a screwdriver on each pole piece with the bass plugged in to see if there is a big difference in volume. This would rule out string height/pup adjustment issues.
 4. My first Thumper was like this, in fact it was worse as one half of the pickup was actually silent. Maybe you have it now ;-) Give Andy a call or email. he was very quick to replace it.
 5. I was never in to them when all my mates were, during our school years, but over the last 10 years ive become a fan. I saw them at the RAH a few years ago and while i hate the venue, it was the best gig i'd seen there. It nice to see a band actually entertain the audience rather just standing there and playing. I have learnt a few of their songs over the years (Surrender being my fav) but never got to play them with a band.
 6. Well?.................................................
 7.
Bugger! Do you think a fender plate will fit?
You could try giving Fender a call and ask if they can supply you a CV one first, or even look on ebay.
 8.
Thanks Dave! Both will be GAK...they have been excellent with pricing and have always offered to order in new items if I didnt want display. Now the question is whether its worth just having the Squier CV P and not bothering with another American Standard P.
I honestly dont think the Squier can beat the MIA, knowing how much you value quality etc, but the idea of getting the CV is to use in less desirable places, if you do go for a MIA you will still need to get something cheaper.
 9. Way more patient than me im afraid. If i cant get things next day i tend to go off the idea. Is this GAK or S&T? OT, The lens will definitely go out tomorrow for next day delivery.
 10. Damn, I cant wait that long lol. I hope you have more luck with this one.
 11.
I'll ring to order tomorrow. So far im pretty sure it'll be the FR P.
Good choice. Next day delivery?
 12.
I see your point, and unfortunately I don't think I'm going to manage to get both basses together under the same lights. But the difference was a lot more than I could imagine being caused by the lighting alone. Either way, it looks like you'd need to see the bass (and preferably in a range of lighting conditions) before buying if you are at all concerned about shades and hues. And, by the way, I agree about not needing to change much on the bass. I've switched the pup, but am happy with everything else on it.
Yeah, you could be right. mine is the only one ive seen in the flesh so i cant really say if mine is typical or not. Im not really a red bass guy but i do prefer dark/wine or even CAR to this. Still, i cant complain, its been my main gigging bass for over a year now, and its been good enough to allow me to sell of my other, more expensive basses. Im not saying i dont want something better but for now i cant see me actually getting or needing anything else. The only reason i changed one of the pots in my CVP was because i damaged one when i was putting a new pup in it. It still has the original wiring and jack, the CV Jazz has all its electrics as stock.
 13. Other than the pup i see no reason to change anything else inside. I know some people do i really dont feel its needed. I found the stock pots to be smoother than the CTS pots i brought, and i had 6 of them trying to get s smooth one, and ive now been gigging my CV's for over a year, almost every weekend and never had any problems. I did change the cap in the P but only because i wanted to hear what difference a standard Fender P rated one makes, not because i felt a more expensive one of the same capacitance would make any difference. I believe the Squier ones are different to the usual P caps.
 14. Thanks Gareth. You can blame GW for setting me off down the maple path. I think the bass looks a lot better with the maple neck. Now first thing in the morning give GAK a call. If you can get it by Friday i will give us all something sensible to talk about, otherwise we will be stuck with the usual silly Friday threads :-)
 15. Under certain artificial light mine looks like this, but under natural or very bright light its very pink-ish.
 16.
Well, that depends, and not just on the light. I've got one that I would say is very red, and lovely too. But the other day I was in a shop that had one that was really quite a different hue, much more dark pink, and much less to my taste. So I suspect different batches have had significantly different paint put on them. So this is another one where you'll really need to see the bass in question before buying.
Mine can look dark or very light. I'd be interested to know how yours looks under the same shop lights.
 17.
Hmm, if I get a P bass on the Fender rebate ill have 2 Ps, and 1 J. A CV Jazz would balance things out! Ah well, no rush.
As GW said, shut up and get on with it ;-)
 18.
We all have out heads turned by the frantic playing of the Wootens, the Sheehans, the Manrings etc
Probably in the minority but quite the opposite, these players bore me to tears. Ok, maybe not the players themselves but their style of music. To me its like sitting in front of an open freezer naked, leaves me very cold and numb (yes, i have). Call me shallow but im quite taken with Take That's Rule the world at the moment. There, ive said it. I expect to be either banned or ridiculed by the end of the day :-)
 19.
Would a Gramma Pad make any difference if your cab was on wheels/casters?
Yes, it would make it taller
 20.
And a GRAMMA would also make an Ashdown sound a lot better.
Yeah, you can nail it to the front of the cab Really, really sorry, i just couldn't resist.
 21.
Brought an Auralex Gramma pad a few weeks ago and did my first gig last night. Done the same venue a few times before and it made a noticeable difference. Recently migrated from a EBS to a TC Classic450/RS210/RS212 rig and I've gotta admit, the jury was still out after struggling to dial in a sound over the past few gigs. Last night was so different. Plugged in, a few minor tweaks and bang, lo and behold a tighter, more focused and punchy sound. Loads of bottom end still there but it was so much more defined and controlled. I'm a happy camper. If you'd had told me how much a difference the Gramma Pad could make, I'd not have believed you. Always been weary of "snake oil" but this is the real deal IMHO. I'd struggle to think of anything sub-£50 which has made such a huge improvement to my sound. T
A lot of us went through this a couple of years ago when someone posted a very cheap deal and we all rushed to get them. Ive not gigged without mine since. Like you i had played the same venues a few times without the pad so i could hear the difference straight away. Ive had the strips but using the full pad made a much bigger difference, could also be down to the foam on the underside of the platform helping keep things in check.
 22. No experience with those pups but i have seen one or two Squier CV pups for sale fairly recently, at least these are a known quantity. If you dont get many replies about the Wilkinson's there are quite a few posts about the Squier CV stuff.
 23.
The bridge alone makes it worth the premium over the VM, the brass item is so much better than those dodgy bent bits of tin.
Nice bridges indeed but i couldn't get on (or rather didn't want to) with the 20mm string spacing and have replaced both mine.
