What do you call medium? With the standard MIA's selling for over £1000 i wouldn't call them cheap. -
If you're happy with a couple of body shapes, and three or four pickups shared between dozens of models......................................... For arguably the pioneer of mass produced electric bass guitars, they do'nt seem to have come up with much new since the Jazz Bass.IMO
Yep. A P or Jazz body, with one P pickup is good enough for me. I realise some people want something different, im not knocking that, but you can have pretty much anything you want already, yet still most people go for the tried and tested.
Well that's another matter Lots of things do a great job as they do now but doesn't mean they won't advance My point was that if they wanted to Fender have the resources to produce something new and innovative but they choose not to for whatever reason (well presumably they reckon it's good economics and they'd probably be right!). I'm not knocking them it's their choice but it would be beneficial to us if they looked in to doing something original.
I do agree, its more about economics rather than innovation but im guessing Fender haven't stayed in the business this long without knowing what they are doing, or doing market research to find out what people want. Could be wrong of course. -
It think Fender Fender's design team is a bloke with a few buckets containing bits of card that say things like "jazz pickups". Fender do make some top notch basses, just a shame they can't be bothered to apply their skills to something genuinely new.
Do we really need something genuinely new? Doesn't what we have available now do a good enough job? -
Fitted to a Sub4. Totally eradicated the weak G string problem and the John East preamp is great to really taylor the tone properly. £300 well spent
I put the same pup in my SUB last year. Cant say it totally eradicated the weak G string but it certainly made a difference. To be honest im not sure if i really liked the difference, it seemed to make the bass sound a bit blander IMO. I didnt change the preamp though.

Being asked to turn down by management
I keep getting misquoted. It was someone else who said "I was merely making the point that for most members here, playing covers doesn`t involve any integrity". For my part i will always try and get the gig done. The one time it didn't happen was when we were told to finish the gig without the drummer. We didn't want to play a funk/soul set without drums cos we knew it would sound rubbish. Why is that so difficult to understand? So we talked about it and then told the manager that we weren't able to play our set without drums and suggested that we pack up and go. He, i think, was quite relieved as he was worried about loosing his licence due to complaints from neighbours to the council. There were no histrionics or handbags at dawn. It was all handled, dare i say, with integrity. No-one died. We still work in another of their establishments so they obviously weren't too upset.
My quote was based you your "Maybe thats where I differ from "most members here" comment. Im not questioning you have integrity, i just dont know why you think others dont have it. Now that you have elaborated on the walk out then i can understand that its not as unprofessional as it sounded, and was probably the right thing to do as long as the Landlord was in agreement. I dont think you had mentioned the landlord's reaction or opinion before (its along thread so sorry if you have). I think this thread has gone on far to long, ive lost track of whats been said. Im glad you cleared up the walking out issue though. -
For me there is integrity involved. Yes, even in a covers band. Maybe thats where I differ from "most members here" and yourself. I am maybe old fashioned but firmly believe that if we are going to do something we should do it as well as possible.
Sometimes i read the word "integrity" as "ego". In the old days just being in a covers band was said to have no integrity, but people change thier minds once they start playing in covers bands. Its just a throw away word for "im right" IME. Im sure we all have integrity (why wouldn't we?) but some people think theirs is better than others, or because people dont agree then they dont have any, as you have shown above. IMO walking out on a gig cant be covered by having integrity, nor professionalism, not unless both you and the Landlord had mutually agreed it just wasn't working. If that was the case then that's fair enough and it sounds like the best thing to do. -

I get your point but with each new model offering various options as well i think it could get very confusing for the buyer. -
I'm well into Fenders but the jag is the same as the squier version, the new jazz is the same as the blacktop except with a different body/neck config. Does seem kinda pointless,
Why is offering more options pointless? Seems sensible to me. -
NOT GREAT NEW BASS DAY - EBMM Ray HH Matching Headstock
dave_bass5 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
I think a 3EQ is more versatile, i just never used the mid control. If i cut the mids i would get a weak G sting and my rig had enough mid boost for me to not need to push any more through it. Never really had a bad tone out of either though. -

After owning a SUB and a Ray34 (yeah yeah, not a real SR etc etc ;-) I think i do prefer a 2EQ. -

I'm not sure what to make of all that but you seem to be happy doing what your doings, as am i so i don't see much difference to be honest, other than the fact that we (my band) have never been, and never wanted to be a pub band (or play pubs) so maybe we bypassed the mediocrity at an early stage. As for social club gigs, thats a very small % of our gigs and we mostly look on them as a bit of a breather from the weddings, a good place to try out new songs and get paid, no real preasure, plus the beer is dirt cheap. -

Fingers and legs crossed for you Gareth. lets hope this is perfect, it sounds like it will be. I agree about the rosewood/white combo, very classy. -
Ive just seen the new Plantet waves mini headstock tuner. Looks pretty good for keeping on the bass during the gig. Might give it a go.

Ped, Are we going to get the fact that email notifications are showing code rather than symbols (like £, %, & etc) fixed?
I recently got a Snark, I really like it. If you want a clip-on tuner I'd definitely recommend one.
And the display looks great IMO. Very easy to see without being too bright.

What is the best way to turn someone down? (in a band setting)
dave_bass5 replied to jackers's topic in General Discussion
It might be worth talking to the singer about this. If she isnt comfortable either then just text him (joke). Personally i would give him a try. You might then find he really isnt suitable musically, at least that would be a valid reason, he might even agree. -
More new Fender models - The 'Modern Player' Series
dave_bass5 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
I can see the logic with the newer models they keep brining out. How many times do we see people saying "if only it had a maple neck/blocks/etc"? While Fender are just re using parts they are giving us more choice. They arent trying to change the world, just give us more choice. -
While ive never done it as i dont use effects i imagine its to get more control over the tone. At the default setting you get the clean tone and the effected tone coming out of the speaker. I would imagine some people wont want the clean tone in the mix so changing the jumper will remove that. You would then get out what you put in. Thats how i see it anyway.
I'm sold on anything with maple neck and black blocks and binding
Id love a black PJ with maple neck but dont really go for black blocks on a maple neck. Looks like they have a Squier HM bridge on them, if so im guessing the string spacing will be 20mm so another negative for me. -

Actually I'm going to retract that last bit about seriousness. That was a bit too much of a blanket statement and I know it's not always the case.
