My Squier Jazz is also the best bass in the world! How did that happen?
Ive given up mid range basses as my Squier's do the job for me so not sure what a high end bass would offer other than looks and maybe a different feel. If i had the "spare" cash to by something a lot more expensive I probably would but even with unlimited money ive seen the prefect bass for under £2000 so i wouldn't even consider a higher end boutique bass.

Ive got some Grado SR60's but dont really like them. First off i normally plug in to the PC and thats in the living room so being open backed they are too noisy. Sound wise they are great but i hate, with a passion, the cable that they come with. This alone has put me off using them. I now use Sennheiser HD215 but im always on the lookout for something a bit fuller sounding, i might have a look at the AKG's mentioned.
No more than the original (see below) :
and its been dropped on the floor lol. Good luck with the sale. A bit OT but if anyone has the War of the Worlds stage show DVD there is some great rehearsal footage of Herbie with his Jazz. -
Mind you, I don't really like playing the song live, as I think it falls in the category of 'Mustang Sally', 'Johnny B Goode' etc, that has been done to death IMO.
You mean the crowd pleaser's

Up to that point the only Jazz I had played was my HW-1. That had a different tone and i guess i was expecting the DJ5 to have it. The DJ5 sounded great but it just wasn't what i was looking for at the time. I Also think maybe i didn't like the Nordstrands so it might just be coincidence. By the time i had placed the for sale ad i had come to like it but also moved on to a different tone so it made sense to sell it while i could get a good price for it. The original buyer was also in N.I. I cant remeber who it was now but i know he sold it on.

Me and my guitarist play the intro, it sounds better with both us playing it and its a chance to see who mucks it up.

Just go in to the bass guitar forum and type Squier in to the search box. Loads of posts about them. For what it's worth I love my CV's. Having owned higher end basses in the past I now realise the cheap basses play every bit as well as those costing two or three times the cost. They aren't perfect, and the colour options are way too limited but for the price I think they rival the American standards. One thing to note is that they have vintage style frets. These are a bit lower than the usual medium jumbo frets and I love them. You won't find these on most of the cheaper end Fenders so it's something else to consider over the MIM.
Apologies for going slightly off topic but I've played this bass Dave and it's a cracker. Well set up and very lightweight. A real gem. What didn't you like about it? Frank.
From the moment I first pugged it in (as a jazz bass) i never really got on with the deep tone. I felt compared to my HW-1 Jazz bas sit lacked clarity and punch. Even changing the pups to Nordstrands didnt really help. In all other respects i loved the bass and given the choice again, i would definitly keep it. I belive its been converted to active and back again since i sold it. I wonder who has it now.

This isnt the place to ask questions, this is the review section.

I did this with my Lakland DJ5. Actually i had the gallery do it. It worked pretty well IMO. I never really got on with the bass so sold it but i do now regret it. I think its still doing the rounds on here. I believe the Sadowsky PJ's allow you to change the pup between a P and a J, and come with 2 pick guards, each cut differently to allow either pup to be used. my one used a normal Jazz pick guard that the Gallery cut to fit the front pup but i think the Sadowsky one is a bit longer, allowing the front pup to sit where it should be on a P (this is from memory, and never having owned one)

This sound likek my Streamliner thread. I just had to keep withdrawing it. Some gigs it worked really well, others it didnt. End of the day i had something i liked a bit better so one had to go. I do sometimes think the wrong one went. The Streamliner is a fantastic head and i really miss how much authority each note gets with this head. Whoever buys this is in for a treat.

We play this about twice a year, around Dec time funnily enough ;-). We normally just add it in to the middle of Stand by me, kills two birds with one stone.

Hugh McDonald has just given me 5 string GAS. Not fair :-(
TIP..If you have never played a 5 or are not used to one, take your reference from the G..eg think of C on the A string as 3 strings down, rather than 3 strings up, don't over use the B........Oh..and get some nappys...
As per my post earlier, ive had them in the past. Two Laklands and a Fender MIA P5. loved playing them but wanted a change so i went back to 4 strings. I think i actually prefer playing 5 strings. I first got in to them when i had o play some songs in new keys for a band i was depp'ing with. It made sense to just transpose rather than learn to play them differently. I find the narrower string spacing on the 5 strings ive had to be more comfortable as well.
Have you watched Hugh's interview in ibass mag?
On my list of things to do this week/end. I saw the thread about the mag yesterday so im going to check it out. Cheers. -

I think no matter what he plays he sounds fantastic. I really enjoy his playing and love his style. Nothing flash, just gets the job done. If he is endorsing Carvin now ) maybe he should change the front page of his website. http://www.huey-mcdonald.com/ -

Ive had them, never really missed them but now all of a sudden i want one again. Chris. Sadowsky's are all over his website, there is a huge picture of one on his front page. Ive no idea what he plays now but the gig ive been listening to also has a DVD and its definitly a Sad on the recordnig. Im not suggesting this tone is only down to him using a Sadowsky, or any bass really, just that his tone and playing is very inspiring, and I do love his 5 string PJ. -

Not only that, but Sadosky GAS. Just listening to a Live Bon Jovi album. I'v always loved Hugh's playing, very melodic without standing out, but when he hit the low note in the opening bar of Dead or Alive, oh my, now i want/need/fancy, whatever a 5 string. Its not going to happen before the new year, and i very, very much doubt it will be a Sad but isnt it funny how GAS can just hit you without warning. -
Damn, instant cab GAS, right out of nowhere :-(

In my experience the P bass is the one i turn to when i am having lost note issues. My Jazz basses have been the main culprits.

LOL. a slapper getting praise. Whatever next

I'd love to be able to dump the pick. I've been trying for a few years and while im ok with just fingers at home (in fact i never bother with a pick at home) as soon as we start the gig im back to picking. There are one or two songs i can use fingers on but i get lazy and dont. Could well be that its because we play the songs a bit too fast. I really must try harder as i love the finger tone way more than the pick tone, although both have their uses of course.

Not sure about the polarity check but you could try tapping something like a screwdriver on each pole piece with the bass plugged in to see if there is a big difference in volume. This would rule out string height/pup adjustment issues.
-
My first Thumper was like this, in fact it was worse as one half of the pickup was actually silent. Maybe you have it now ;-) Give Andy a call or email. he was very quick to replace it.

DR Neon strings. Anyone tried them?
