1. Cheers John. Funny enough i never use a pick at home, and quite often play as if i had one between my thumb and finger, but just use the edge of my thumb. At home i can play like in those vids but when i tried it at a gig i just couldn't keep up, thats when i turned to the foam. Although i could practice it im trying to develop my finger playing speed so this technique will have to wait.
2. Yeah, i realise the pick needs to go to get that authentic tone, i'm working hard to get up to speed with my fingers. Ive found having the foam tone (good phrase) is helping me get there. i definitely need a normal tone and yes, its taking me a bit too long to get the foam back in so i need to sort something to. To be honest in my case its not the end of the world what i do, after all ive been in this band for 9 years and getting the "correct" tone has never really cropped up, its just something i'd like to experiment with now. Before i thought of using foam i have been using the palm mute/pick combination to good effect, but it was because i wanted to use fingers more that i turned to the foam as i find palm muting and finger playing a bit difficult to do at gig speed. I know what you mean about "dub-land". The first time i used the foam my drummer said he couldn't really hear what i was playing, it was too muffled. This i found surprising because i never thought he listened to me anyway ;-) My cab is a bit low end shy so it its not sounding too bad at the moment. The foam is giving me a bit more of a traditional bass tone if that makes sense. I have noticed i dont bother using my BDDI in the smaller rooms, especially those with hollow stages .
3. Cheers. Specs are one thing but i dont think they give the whole picture. After all my 1212L sounds very different from my old Epifani 212.
4.
http://www.bassmute...._mainframe.html
That what im going to get. There was one on here a few weeks ago but i wasn't interested in muting at that time :-(
5. Can i ask you 1215L owners how the tone differers from the 1212L? Is there a bit more low end, and is the tone a bit more even compared to the rather middy 1212L Cheers.
6. As much as i love Lakland's (i even have a JO neck on my Squier) i felt the BG nut width made it a bit uncomfortable to play. Saying that i know a lot of people like those slightly wider P necks, i believe the 50s P is the same so i think its going to be down to what you prefer/condition of the basses etc. I'd say a 2006 Lakland could have a Fralin in it, if so thats a good one to have. As long as its not been changed its easy to tell by the colour of the wires but you or the seller would have to look under the scratch plate to see
7. For what its worth im really enjoying having foam under the strings on my CVP. Even though i play with a pick most of the time im getting a bit more "thump" out of my rig, even though its at the expense of overtones etc. Its not a tone ill use all the time but its helped a lot with the Motown stuff and im now contemplating getting some proper foam mutes. I have tried muting with the left hand but i dont hear the same thump as when the strings are muted at the bridge
8. I think the main difference here is the size and shape of the necks. Im pretty sure the BG is a wider neck than the MIA.
9.
You need to read the full thread . Post number 12 clearly asks about left hand muting. What kjb has done is to answer that, hence his posting number 13.
The way ive read it is that John (JTUK) posted about using left hand muting and someone gave a reply but neither was from the OP.
10.
backline was hidden by 3 chicken rotisseries.
Ive been in to those machine since was a kid, im not 100% but i think the model number of them is.......... :-) Better than Washing machines i guess. I recorded it as i had to go to bed halfway through, and still haven't watched the remaining part.
11. Ive been using 1212L for a few years now but really want a 1215L, i cant afford though but good luck with the sale.
12.
Surprised nobody had mentioned TI (Thomastik Infeld) Flats!
I did ;-)
13. The F1/F500 are now in the Discontinued section of the Markbass website so i guess they are going. As good as the MoMark idea is i really cant see anything that would make me give up my F1, and nothing as small as the F1/F500, which it think is their unique selling point. Maybe a MiniMark is in the pipeline :-)
14. No question they are in good condition but i know many people (myself included) who would not pay the full advertised price for something that has been used and sitting around on a shop floor. Ive never tried a MoMark either, it looks like an interesting option.
15. To be honest i'd rather play a wedding for £400 than sit at home not earning because the client wouldn't pay £850. Not that i would be in a position to as the band don't all think like that and we would never offer ourselves or drop our price that low but that £100 (each) is enough to feed me for the week so as long as im not out of pocket i cant see any reason to turn it down.
16.
I had to discard a couple of shots I took before this, because it read "asschat"...
There's quite a bit of that on here anyway ;-)
17.
By the way, that t-shirt was pinned at the back with no fewer than three hair clips, and of course I tried to roll the sleeves so that they didn't look exceedingly huge - but I failed...
Thats the same shirt i have that ive never worn because i need three clips and a tummy tuck for it to look that good :-)
18. Not only great bass playing but he also manages to sing whilst playing it. I thought the tone and playing was a bit lacking in the video clip but thats to be expected i guess. I got the impression he was a bit lost for what to play.
19. No problem, now you know what I meant and wasn't aiming it at anyone here, but I do know people like that and it winds me up.
20.
By that do you mean that to base ones earnings value on a realistic desire to have a home and feed a family in unreasonable, or should we all just get proper jobs?? Should musicians not be able to earn what amounts to an average salary? Where does your feeling for the above sentiment come from?
No idea what your on about. I don't recal saying any of that. I've seen musicians who put bugger all effort in to it yet moan like hell that they should be getting much more money, those are the people I'm talking about. As for a proper job, being a full time musician is a proper job as far as I'm concerned, although not one I would chose to do.
21. Lol, nothing like a good bit of bad publicity to earn a few quid more.
22.
At the end of the day, it is not about been a full time pro or a semi pro or even someone who gigs once or twice a year. I would just like to dispel the myth that just throwing a couple of cover songs together doesn't mean you have any commercial value, for that you need to put the work in.
I quite agree. I get the impression that some musicians have their head firmly up their ass when it comes to how much they think they should be paid.

24.
I have a steinberger spirit XT2, that I'm just about to put up for sale, bought it with the intention of having a bass at work to play during lunch hour,
Thats the reason i still have my old White Spirit XZ-2 bass at work. My son likes playing it but i dont really use it much, its good for when im doing overtime though. Its a nice bass with a nice tone, i love the EMG Selects, and its the only bass ive had that has 24 frets, not that i ever go that high. Funny enough it was re discovered behind my big digital copier a couple of years ago. Must have been there for a good 6-7 years lol.
25. You could go on to a few agent sites like the the Alive network and go through the process of booking a duo and see how much the going rate is. i would say £300+ is a good price, especially if you are also supplying the lights for the party and maybe ipod music in between sets. Maybe a bit less if you are just going to do the two sets and they have a DJ etc.
