1. I do think the pups are the (only) weak point. I really didn't notice much of a change when i got the NTMB installed and had i have kept it i would probably have put in BIg singles. I've also had a DJ5 that i put Nordy's in (making it a PJ) but never really felt 100% with that bass. Its now the one bass i really regret selling :-(
 2.
It is your old bass Dave. Can't remember who I bought it from but I had it for 2-3 years. I didn't feel it was lacking at all - actually quite liked the bass passive!
Glad its still alive then. I remember the day i got it, i had decided i was going to get a 5 string so went off to the Bass Centre to see what they had. Money wasn't really an object, i just wanted something that was very nice to play, good looking and versatile. They had a large stand with about 6-7 55-01, all black, some with maple necks, some with rosewood. I hadnt heard of Lakalnd before so passed them by to start with. After trying some pretty high end gear, and a very lovely Sandberg PM5 i picked a 55-01 up and fell in love with it. The only issue i had was i also loved the Sandberg, more so for its looks. After going back later with the intention of getting the Sandberg i tried the 55-01 out again and that was that. One of the cheapest 5 strings in the shop yet played and sounded the best (to my ears). All 7 seemed to play and feel exactly the same and i was very impressed. I walked out with this bass and gigged it the next day. Thats was a challenge in itself but i got through the gig ok. Its a great bass, i guess im just a passive Fender guy. Its certainly the most adaptable Bass ive ever owned and the neck is wonderful, i will own a Lakland 5 string again one day. I had a Fender P5 and Duck Dunn during the time i had the 55-01 and i just preferred these i guess. Sorry to be so long winded, just thought i would add a bit of background history. Good luck with the trade Lee.
 3. Yep, cant beat a good jazz neck on anything IMO. Saying that i particularly like the CV necks for their vintage frets. I find it makes playing a bit easier. I even like the P neck although as i have a choice i go for the narrower nut. Good luck with the sale.
 4. Funny enough ive done the reverse. Ive got my CV Jazz neck on my CVP, and couldn't be happier.
 5.
Could well be your old bass mate, i have no idea. The toggle, i am guessing, is for maybe a split coil setting? It does seem to thicken and thin the sound depending on the setting. I feel the bass has a lot of substance in its sound but i guess that depends what your looking for, i thought it was quite funky when i had rounds on it and got a nice slap tone (not that my slap is any good) and a good variation of other tones....just lacking in definition in the lows for me in comparison to my 4 string passive jazz.
IIR the toggle was/is a freq selector selector for the mid range knob, although it might have been re wired since i had it. Im only guesing its my old one by the toggle and the scuff marks on the back of the neck. I did like the tone, it had a very good rocky tone, nice and clanky if needed but also very warm, i just felt a passive Jazz or P was more for me.
 6. Can i ask what the toggle is for? Has this bass been upgraded from stock? Cheers. EDIT:OMG, this looks like my old bass I had a NTMB put in my old 55-01 and the Gallery put the toggle in (against my wishes). I sold it on here a few years ago but know it was sold on quite quickly as the buyer didnt get on with it. For what its worth i felt the tone was a bit lacking in substance, due to the pups rather than the pre amp.
 7. Ive always thought it was just Jools fluffing his line at that point. We do this song but have never tried to capture that moment, and just play it straight.
 8.
A bit late to this thread, but I've encountered Alex both at the old Bass Centre in Wapping (great days) & the Gallery & have always found him to be a top fella
An, I thought I recognised him when I first visited the Gallery, I used to go to the Bass centre in Wapping quite a bit back in the day.
 9.
Why dont shops ask people to put on a dressing gown when they want to play something highly expensive for instance,
When i used to visit a Chappells in Bond st years ago (when they were a huge store) they used to ask people to take their belts off so the instruments didnt get buckle rash. Good idea IMO ..... although i was playing keyboards at the time......Giggady.
 10.
For anyone over that age, there is a very reasonable 12-month scheme at 4.9% interest (from us, anyway).
Oooooo, dont tempt me, im GAS free at the moment and wish to stay that way ;-)
 11. I feel exactly the same Gareth. Ive had a few offers to join original bands or projects over the past few years and ive loved the music, but im so used to the easy life with my covers band that to me it felt like too much hard work and too much time that i felt i couldnt spare. When i was younger, or even before i joined this band i would have been happy to rehearse 3-4 times a week, but with a job, family and the need for some "me" time i just couldn't find the enthusiasm to do all of that, not while im gigging at the weekends anyway. Your definitely not being selfish, especially as your moving away, in a way your doing them a favour by not messing them around.
 12.
The lad had a somewhat unusual playing style. He would play a few random notes and then suddenly smack the strings as hard as he could onto the pickup.
Bass Tourette's
 13.
Cool, cheers. I want mine for much the same reason you have yours do hopefully I'm onto a winner
The only time ive had freq problems was with the Bug system clashing with the wedding video crew's radio mics but they turned them off. For me the smaller the stage the more i appreciate not having to stand on cables etc, but its also nice on the bigger stages, especially if i have to do our sound from the other side of the side. I do prefer my main system as the display and lights give me more feedback as to signal strength and batter life.
 14. Ive had a AKG Bug thing for a few years that I use with my occasional band and a AKG wms400 pro ( I think) for my main band. The range is t great but it's enough for me to walk ateast 15-20 foot from the stage.
 15. I'll not get it no the cable/no cable and what sounds better argument but ive never noticed my AKG wireless systems to affect my tone at all, certainly not at gigs but then i dont go through a large PA most of the time so maybe its just not showing up. For me thats what counts. im sure i might hear a difference at home but once the band are all fired its all good. In fact i cant remember the last bass i had that i used a lead with so to me its just normal to use a wireless system. Not for everyone though.
 16. Nice one, welcome to the club. Ive been doing this for a few years now. While i dont move around much (at all most of the time) its nice to not feel cable around my feet, especially on smaller stages. It also great being able to go out front during sound checks. I stopped using FX etc at about the same time as i didnt want any cables on the floor, although i do have a BDDI sitting on my amp.
 17. Ive probably missed it by im wondering why didnt TC actually make it a 450 "real" watts head, meaning it will be way louder than any other 450watt head on the market? Was it so they didnt loose sales of the 750 i wonder?
 18.
Sadly, as too many people on Talkbass and here have proved, numbers on paper seem to matter more than the sound coming out of their cabs!
I dont think that's the case here on BC (at least). Hardly anyone has actually said the head isnt up to the job or loud enough, the discussion is about the marketing IMO.
 19.
1. I know what I want before I go in. 2. I briefly ask any relevant questions. 3. I may have a 5 minute test on the purchase if appropriate. 4. I then make payment and leave hopefully within 10 minutes of arrival. All this happens unless I get ignored or the staff are rude or patronising. Or the 5 minute test has had a negative result. Then I go somewhere else. I'm not a natural born shopper.
wow, i bet Tesco's love you
 20.
All this recent talk about music shops made me think. How would you honestly describe yourself as a customer?
I dont have time to trawl around music shops so other than getting work done at the Gallery occasionally i dont use shops. Sorry but im one of those people who want the best price and it seems the web is the best place for that. I would love to support my local music shops (other than the Gallery i dont actually have any) but i have a family to support as well and they come first.
 21.
I think the main point to take away is that Alex has now personally come on this site and apologised to the OP and what's more has stipulated that he'll make sure it doesn't happen again. You've got to say that's pretty decent. It's less about blowing smoke up their arses and more to do with the admission that nobodies perfect, we all make mistakes and have bad days etc. My experience suggests that these incidents are few and far between.
Like i said, it wasn't aimed at Alex and my comments were based on the posts before Alex came on here. I shall go and get some sleep now.
 22.
But the Bass Cellar have hardly earned the right to be defended, after all I have never heard a good report from anyone who's been there personally. The guys at the Gallery (after some initial hesitancy) were more than happy to help the first time I visited and utterly brilliant the second time I went down.
Then you never read any of my old posts, nor spoke to BC customers who were happy ;-) Every shop ive used has had good and bad staff. My point was that if it was someone at the BC people would say thats why i avoid it, yet because its someone we all know and respect its excusable. Ive used the Gallery many times so im well aware of their CS etc, i was really just commenting on some of the early posts and comparing them to the same situation and responses in the BC thread, which seems to be full of people going in to the shop just to have a moan on here about the exact thing the OP posted about. Sorry, im having a rough tiring week, ignore me.
 23. Its funny how OP had a bad experience at the Gallery and a lot of people are defending or making excuses for it, yet if the OP had said Bass Cellar everyone would be slagging the sales guy off. Sorry, no offence to anyone (nor the Gallery and staff, alex has always seemed a bit quiet but very helpful), its just something that struck me after reading just the first page.
 24.
you mean Hungerford bridge ?
Yeah, thats the one. I forgot they all had names. Thanks for reminding me.
 25.
Has anyone noticed scracthy a scratchy volume pot on the Streamliner? I saw on TB that this is quite common?
I did under the same conditions as the others mention on TB but never found it a real problem. I assumed it was normal. A bit off topic but personally i found the pots to feel a bit cheap and moved a bit too easily, not smooth like my MB heads.
