Again, let me say I like the tone of the two pups full on. That's highlighted in my post above, where are you getting the idea i don't like it? Im not complaining, please can this be noted so no more of this derailing goes on.

Im no there to argue, just to point out i did say with both pups on and never meant to make it to mean anything else. Ive only owned a handful of Jazz basses, far less than most people on here but they all sounded different. The HW-1/one definitely had a lot of clarity and growl, were definitely the ones that cut through alot better than the others but lacked a bit of low end, the Lakland DJ5 was warm and solid, a bit too warm for me back then and the CV jazz is pretty close to the Lakland, although with the 74's in it was a nice mid punch to it. I also had 3 MIA's last year and these sounded just perfect to me, full and deep but with the articulation of the HW-1/one's, and these also had less of a scoop with both pups on.

I think part of my issue is i play with a pick so tend to loose that finger fullness, that probably accounts for thinner tone from some of the strings in my case. At them moment my only Jazz is the CV Jazz and it has a very warm tone and really doesn't cut through like my old HW-one and MIA so maybe its time i replaced it as i would love to go back to a Jazz bass.

This is why im not keen on PJ's, at least not stock ones, as i love the deep tone the neck pup gets, you just dont normally get that smooth tone with a P pup IME.

I must admit ive never heard a jazz bass player that wasn't cutting through the mix. I do find i have to Eq my Jazz differently to my P to get the best of of them.

I keep going between Jazz and P. While i prefer the Jazz bass i find my D and G string get a bit lost in a band mix, especially up to the 5th fret. Playing a open D and a fretted D on the A sting gives me quite a different volume. Ive always found this to a certain extent and only on Jazz basses. EQ helps though and its not something that would put me off for life, its just something im aware of and is probably the one reason i stick to my P most of the time. Ive had a PJ but the problem there is you dont get a true Jazz tone as you only have the one single coil bridge pup, and i like the slightly mid scooped tone of both pups on.

The 410L, much as I love it, is overkill for a lot of situations with PA support.[/quote] Yeah, the size of the 1212L is perfect IME. 99% of my gigs are without PA support and ive never had to turn my head up past halfway, to me this means im loud enough (normally too loud gong by some of the recordings) so this has meant no need for a bigger cab. The biggest cab ive ever owned was a Epifani UL212 and that was nowhere near as loud as my 1212L, and i really had to push that do to the lack of punchy mids. This experience is whats making me a bit cautious about changing cabs, although the posts ive read recently about the Compact have put my mind at ease. In the past ive felt that as long as i can be heard without having to push my rig to distortion or too hard im happy, but now i realise i want a different tone and no matter how many heads i go through its the cab thats the restricting factor. Even if i do need to turn up more with a Compact im sure ill have plenty of volume but a more pleasant tone as well.

I always wanted a 410L but never really got around to getting one. I always thought my 1212L was ideal (and its worked really well over the past few years). i did borrow one for one gig and was very, very impressed with it. I preferred the tone over the 1212L, even when my 1212L was still in favour with me.

Nice one Chris. Glad it worked out for you. Im probably going to go for one, its just working out the logistics of getting it. Im at a gig at the moment and my 1212L sounds so in your face, without sounding smooth or deep. Ive got both heads hooked up and the Streamliner is doing a better job, ive got the 660hz cut quite a bit as well as the lows but its not much better than the F1.

Cheers guys. Im not sure if we are a loud band or not. Im guessing we arent as i never have to push my head hard and whiel the drummer is loud its more cymbals rather thna pure power. It does sound like a Compact is the way to go though.

We shall see,[/quote] Back in your what to get thread us non owners of the compact took a brief, slight bashing for recommending something we didnt own. Glad your happy with it Chris. It looks bigger than i expected. Thats a good thing i guess, and part of the reason it sounds (apparently ;-) so good. When is the first gig with it?

Dont forget to check the sizes. Sometimes the bridge pup is a bit longer than the neck pup. If your only going to buy one pup for the cheap bass make sure you get the right one. Also watch out for the fact that different makes can have the hot and earth wire colours reversed. Its not a big deal, just some thing to watch out for. If the volume drops when both pups are on just reverse the wires from one pup.

It sounds like i "need" one, not just want one. Thats not how things normally work is it? Now the toss up is between a compact or OHM's UL115. I know what you mean about the 1212L being tiring, sometimes it sounds a bit to full on. i think i can get away with a cab that quieter although it will take some getting used to as ive been using 12xx cabs for 6 years almost exclusively. Chris. Hows the new cab?
