1.
I think Markbass needs to have a shuffle and create some new models. The SA450 mid control on a 'Littlemark 4' with the new limiter, headphone socket, aux in, and the same or slightly higher wattage. That shot is a nice setup.
I would love a F500 as it seems more like a SA450, only smaller. If only it wasnt so expensive. In fact, i think all the MB heads are a bit over priced now. That shot was taken at a Holiday camp, the biggest we have played. No real PA support and very high stage. The amps were fantastic but the cab was rubbish. I sold it just after that gig. We have been back there twice and using my 1212L ive had the master on about 1/3 lower than with the UL212 and that was too loud.
 2.
Here are my experiences with the MarkBass input gain. I have an SA450 head and i recently aquired a CMD121H combo. When using the SA450 I have the gain set to about 12 o'clock to make sure that it doesn't clip, but when i plugged in to the combo for the first time i was suprised that i could wind the gain up to around 5 o'clock before there was any sign of the clip light coming on. I presume that the two amps just have different input sensitivity?
That is strange. Was the combo using a LMIII head or the older LMII. Im not sure that would make a difference anyway. The SA450 and LMII do have slightly different input sensitivities but i wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference In fact when i was trying out my new LMII a few years ago i used this rig for one gig. One amp per set and both sounded almost identical. A bit off topic but ive just noticed the SA450 is now discontinued. Shame. Two great amps no longer available.
 3. Well i must admit i would love another 3TSB/maple MIA Jazz but as thats way out of my price range im happy to go with what i have. Its a "would like" rather than "cant live without" Amp's have never really interested me as far as changing them every now and then goes. I dont use amps at home so its only maybe 2 hours a week that i need one, and even at gigs i set and forget most of the time. I dont feel that amps are as personal as basses. Its always nice to have a good, reliable one though, and i would think your set for life now Gareth (or at least until Aug lol) Hows it all going with the new gear?
 4.
Yea I was tempted by a new amp, but only for a change rather than out of any real desire. And I realised that I'd be bored of it in a week, particularly given how rare Berg IPs are and will remain.
Same here. I didnt need one but after so long with one brand i thought it was time for a change. Actually now i have sellers GAS as i need to shift the old amp and cab soon.
 5. Same here. Although i got a new amp recently im more than happy (for now) with my Basses, even though they are Squiers.
 6.
You and me both. I guess there must be lots of people with crap speakers attached to their televisions. I also think, to those criticising JPJs tone, he *probably* knows what he's doing.
Im sure he does but wouldn't he be at the mercy of the sound engineer(s)
 7. Another big vote for Wizards. Ive got a set of custom 74's in my CV Jazz, and i have a Thumper thats not currently in use at the moment but im thinking of putting it back in my P (long story, some will know why). At the moment i have a Fender 62RI in my P and it sounds more P than the Thumper, but i think the Thumper has a bit more kick to it and it definitely has more character, just not in the old school way. Ive never liked SDQP's, i find them too toppy and aggressive but i know a lot of rock players like that.
 8.
I saw him in the 12 Bar club in Denmark St. years ago (didn't go to see him, he was supporting somebody else) & he was absolute f***ing rubbish. Haven't seen or heard anything that has made me think otherwise to this day.
Ive seen buskers on the london underground that have way more talent but maybe im just not in to his sort of music. JPJ is pretty average as well
 9. When i went through 3 MIA jazz basses last year, looking for one that was made properly, 1 had a maple FB, the other two had RW. All three were identical other than colour and to my ears the Maple one did have a bit more top and wasn't quite as warm sounding as the two RW basses.
 10.
I'll watch the DVD..
Me too but i wont bother turning the volume up. Sounds like a really boring night to me. Rather than watch some old timers w***ing off on stage i might as well........;-)
 11.
how much were you looking for? ben toying with the idea of having just oone cab
I need to get the cab back and see what condition its in. Its fully working and never been pushed hard but i dont want to price it too high as the carpet covering is a bit tatty (although not ripped IIR). I guess £300 will be a ball park figure but let me check it over first, it might be a bit less. These cabs are very loud, i had a Epifani UL212 that sounded great on its own but was nowhere near as loud and punchy as this cab. It does have a mid bump, and a certain tone that you cant really EQ out, but if you like this tone then its really all you need for a small one cab rig IME.
 12. I'll be selling my Schroeder 1210R soon. I should be getting it back off my drummer next weekend. Its a 1x12 and 1x10 with tweeter. Its one of the original, non light versions. Very punchy and bloody loud. EDIT: Sorry, just realised you want to run it with another cab. This is a 4 ohms cab so no good.
 13.
Cheers!
Just dont go plugging any of it in or turning any lights on and all will be fine ;-)
 14.
SL900 turned up as well yesterday. Tested it, all works fine. I was right to return the other as with the same cable, this fitment is MUCH tighter and doesnt move.
Thats great news. Things are looking up.
 15. Good news about the bass Gareth. Cant wait to see the pics. So, thats all sorted, just the amps to get now then (and the other incoming basses of course).
 16.
I've got a HW Precision on an indefinite loan and it's great, no vibe to speak of really, but feels and sounds really nice! I've not gigged the CV Precisions, just the Jazz Si
I had a HW-one P in black and loved it but as i still had a HW1 Jazz sitting around i ended up putting the neck on the P and loved it even more. This was the first time i had played a P with a Jazz neck on it and it certainly opened my eyes.
 17.
Great news...
Yep, its for the best. It sounds like the new singer has also brought new enthusiasm to the band so its a win win situation. Good luck.
 18.
Well I've only ever played two basses, the two I have at the moment: the HW1 jazz and the CVP 60s. I love them both and they are not going anywhere. According to the guy who fitted my flats and set them up (a bass expert in Boro) he said he preferred the CVP in terms of playability. Apart from the thick gloss coat, it's been a great buy (nearly new off BC)
The HW-one Jazz is a great sounding bass but you really cant beat the CV necks IME. Ive not directly compared my CV P to another P, but from memory I prefer the tone i have now to the Lakland Duck Dunns ive had in the past, even with Fralins in them. The first DD costs me £950, the second (hand) cost me £799 and the CVP cost me £270, maybe thats why i like the CVP more :-)
 19.
The CV's are great for the money, the fit & finish is easily on par with the MIA, and the parts and sound are excellent for the price. IMO it did feel cheaper in my hands than my MIA though, and the tone wasn't as full or complete as my American Standard. Si
Exactly what i found with my CV Jazz. At one point my CV Jazz had Wizards in it and it sounded really nice, but when i put the same pups in my HW-one it sounded very different. The bass seems to have a certain quality to its tone, no matter what pup it has. I felt it was quite a warm, round tone. My HW-one on the other hand was very growly and the burp was fantastic (if you like that sort of thing). The MIA's i had were the best of the bunch. Tone wise i felt they were in the middle, not as warm as the CV but thicker and punchier than the HW-one. Looks wise they were fantastic. I will own a MIA 3TSB/Maple again one day. Im not a lover of thick gloss, although i wouldn't let it put me off a bass, but the thin coating on the MIA is really nice.
 20. As much as i dont really like P necks either i agree with the others that the CVP is a pretty small version of it, especially as it has vintage frets as well. Ive swapped my CV necks over as i do prefer a Jazz neck but every now and then i get the Jazz out (with the P neck) and i really only notice a difference when i go back to the jazz neck. Im trying to get myself used to the P neck so im ready for a man sized neck one day, but so far im too comfortable with jazz necks (and even they vary)
 21.
See, what people could do is just order a CV P and J, and get a deal for two, and not bother getting an American Standard.... But, the question is from me, seriously, HOW do they compare?
Well, you know my story. 3 MIA Jazz basses that weren't made properly, 1 CV Jazz that had no flaws that i could find. Tone wise, my HW1 and HW-one, MIA, MIM classic Jazz and CV Jazz all sounded different so i wouldn't say a MIA sounds better than a CVJ. The MIA's do feel nicer to hold of course. IME you can feel the quality, and the grain on the two 3TSB's was fantastic. The CV's have a very thick coat of gloss on them so dont look as classy IMO, but these days im paying less attention to looks (as opposed to faults in the finish of course) and more to tone and playability. I know i keep going on about them but i really love the vintage frets and it felt almost like hard work playing a jumbo fretted jazz.
 22.
Do you really think that the CVs are better than the Mexican and American Fenders? Have you tried the Squier Vintage Modified basses and if so, how did they compare?
For me it is. I have a P bass thats got a jazz neck, with vintage frets on it. I cant imagine finding anything like that off the shelf from Fender. For me this is perfect. Ive never played a VM, mainly as they have jumbo frets, so they dont really appeal to me. I am trying to get to grips with the CV P neck on my CV Jazz, but again, that has vintage frets so not directly comparable to the VM. I know the frets are a personal thing, and not really a deal breaker but if i have a bass that has all the right bits on it, and plays like a dream i can live with the colour.
 23. Ive settled down with mine. I use my CV P with CV Jazz neck for all my gigs now, and other than the horrible colour its become one of the most played basses ive ever had. There really isnt much to talk about now as i dont intend to change any more parts, i'm not having any problems with it and it plays like a dream. The only thin i have thought about is getting it resprayed, probably black, but as it plays so well i can live with the colour for now. I would love a Matt Freeman as i prefer black, and i really want a maple necked P but as im still not 100% comfortable on a P neck i cant see me getting one just yet. My one regret is the amount i've wasted on other, "better" basses over the past 5-6 years.
 24.
Reminds me of the story (think it was on BC ages ago) of a band in the dressing room of a working mens club, guitarist is quietly tuning up in the corner. Club chairman comes in and does his nut, saying to the guitarist "you've known about this gig for 6 months and you're only just tuning up now?...
Dont, my guitarist is normally late for most gigs (and he brings the singer and PA) and its always when we are pushed for time that he decides to put new strings on his guitar, meaning we miss our sound check. Bloody frustrating.
 25.
Not enough that anyone would notice then. Seriously though, get a headless! The only bass I have that I can rely on being in tune 'out of the bag' is my Westone Quantum (headless). I still always check it though, why on earth wouldn't you?
LOl, Actually they would notice as the notes on the G string would be the only ones in tune with the lead guitarist ;-)
