Not feeling it :( Upcoming gig and no excitement

Nice one Gareth. I think most of us knew the outcome before you posted. Glad it went well though. Seems like the band came through in the end. What bass did you take? -
Which 3 Bassists Influence Your Bass Lines?
Know exactly what you mean, I feel I should like them because people say how good they are, but just can't quite stay interested long enough to sit and listen to an entire tune. I think it's cos they only play the verses and leave all the choruses out...
Yeah, i sometimes feel im not a real bass player because i dont know even 50% of the names banded about on here. The way some poepl go on about them make me feel liek i nee dot go and listen but liek you i just cant stay interested. Maybe its because its not really relevant to my playing as im much more of a basic driving bass line/rock player and i hate being asked to play solo's etc. -
Which 3 Bassists Influence Your Bass Lines?
dave_bass5 replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
John Taylor was my first and biggest influence. John Deacon because i love his bass lines Bruce Foxton. I really got in to his bass line when i had to learn a load of Jam covers for the tribute thing i did a few years ago. So much energy. ....and who ever played the bass line im learning at the time. Ive never listened to Jaco, Wooten or many of the highly respected bass masters, especially the virtuosos. I find their sort of music just doesn't interest me in the slightest and in fact i find someone doing all that noodling very boring. Guess ive lived a sheltered life. -
whys a gig thread in off topic? Surely its bass related
Not if your playing guitar or drums ;-)

And getting back to gigs. Has anyone played at Caerphilly Castle (THE castle. not a pub ;-) ? We have a gig there on Sat and have been told its pretty basic. Just wondering.
Me too. Had to top it up half way through because I ran it too cold before I got in. On the upside, the new soap I got seemed to cut through better than my old body-wash... and smelled nicer. Got some nice comments afterwards.
I had 4 other bathers turn up expecting me to lend them my new Active shower gel One didn't even have a sponge.
Fair enough. It shouldn't be a big job to replace the pot.
Yuo would think wouldn't you. The pots just turned up and ive ordered the wrong bloody ones. I knew i needed split shaft but seems like i ordered solid instead. I dont evne have any knobs that will fit. Im still going to try and get them fitted tonight and if they go in ok ill order some knobs tomorrow. I've also ordered some split shaft mini CTS pots, just in case although i would prefer to use the larger versions. what a mess lol. Im sure it will be al worth it. -

Gareth. I understand all your issues but having been through them all i say you really dont have anything to worry about. Too many bands spend way to long rehearsing, getting every note spot on. I've found this can drain the life out of a band. Your lucky in that you haven't been going for long and you have a big gig. There is nothing like a gig to help tighten a band up IME. I can see your girlfriends point, and assuming the band are rubbish ;-) then i would agree with her but it doesn't sound like you are. No band is going to be spot on, ever. I find in rehearsals there can be a lack of adrenalin running through the band if your going over the same songs week in week out. Im sure even if there are mistakes they will be so minor that no one will notice other than the band, and you'll all be have such a good time that it wont matter. I'm like you, always want the band to preform at their best and seem to worry the most, and get annoyed, when things dont go 100%. I find this has a detrimental effect on me though and if im in that sort of mood i dont enjoy the gig. When i look around at the others having a good time i want to kick myself (i tend to do a loud slap line when its not called for instead). You have done all this before so expect more, but give the others a break as im sure the last thing they will need is to feel down about the band. Again, ive been a pain with my lot and i could see that it creates the wrong atmosphere and doesnt help. Smile, enjoy the gig and report back tomorrow. Good luck. -
I guess the rear sockets are useful if your using rack gear that also has rear sockets. It keeps it all neat on the front. Personally i would prefer it all around the back so the leads dont block quick access to the knobs on the fornt. Hmmm...That all sounds a bit pervy.
Then you may well be right Dave
Ah right. Im always getting those two confused. And that was the only set of Dunlops ive ever owned. I would love this again, especially as im getting back in to the P bass tone again. But im skint im afraid. If there is anything in my sig you fancy......... ;-)
Can't see any Black Schallers here Dave
It must be a trick of the light as they look black here. Im talking about the strap locks of course. These arent standard Laklands. Oops, i meant Dunlops. Sorry if i got it wrong. Free bump for a fantastic bass either way.

Upgrading the wiring and pots in a Squier CV P.
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yeah, i agree, they dont always seem to do a lot. I do like the tone i get with it right off on the the Bass. Im not sure i could get the same tone using just one knob on the amp. On my HW-one i have the grease bucket tone circuit and that more like turning the treble off on the amp but with my other basses i like the slight increase in low end you seem to get with the tone off. There are also people that say backing off the volume knob a bit gives a nicer tone. This is one ive tried and it does seem to work but ive not compared it with just backing the input gain off the amp. -
There's a school of thought that says you should bypass the pots on the bass, because they degrade the signal, and use your amp to make any adjustments, I believe Mike Dirnt does this
Thanks but i think there would be more downsides than benefits to doing this. Its all baloney IME. it might make a very slight difference in a studio setting but i doubt it would make much difference in the real world. If it did people wouldnt pay £1000's for basses that had knobs. When i got my old DJ5 modded to a PJ i did a lot of reading and it seemed that taking the Jazz pup out of circuit would improve the P tone. I got a switch put in the bass to do just this. Not once did i ever hear any difference between having the pup off using the switch and just turning it to zero. -
That sounds like one of the leads isn't properly soldered to the tag on the pot - it doesn't sound like the pot itself is faulty. I'd try re-soldering everything and see if that sorts it.
Thanks. there are two wires going to the lug and i did re wire both. If i exert slight pressure on the lug it cuts out. I cant see anything shorting outside the casing but maybe there is a crack in the track inside. Either way, its quite a small, fiddly pot so putting something larger in will help with the soldering. -
allparts or fender? (turns out fender parts aren't universal!)
dave_bass5 replied to chrisd24's topic in General Discussion
I'd guess that the Fender neck and the Fender body will fit together perfectly, as they will have been cut to very specific measurements specific to Fender factories because Fender designed their parts to be interchangable in case of one part breaking etc.
Oh my word. Do Fender know about this new change of direction? -
I listen to the song a fair few times first, to let the melody, changes, format etc sink in. Then I learn the basic chord changes and put in the twiddly bits afterwards. Works for me.
Same here. Once i get the song in my head its pretty easy to work out the basics. If its a song with a lot of chord changes ill try and get hold of a tab or midi file if i can find one thats close enough to help. None of them are 100% but i find a lot do help save a bit of time. The one thing i dont do is use notes at a gig. I find if i write the part out it helps get it in to my head but i learn the songs well enough to not take sheets of paper on stage. I find i can get lost easier if im trying to follow the song from something that written down. And i feel if its not in my head i havent put enough effort in to learning it. I don't go for note perfect, just enough to get from the beginning to the end with the right feel, and a few bits of my own if there is room.

Im not sure if this has already been posted but i only just came across it. Two videos shot at the same time but from different angles. I like the bass although not the colour. No GAS here.

Good luck with the gig Gareth. Personally (and i know where your coming from) i think you should just feel that your doing your best, and dont worry too much about the others. Im always being hard on my lot, as i feel i have a more experience and a more professional attitude towards the whole thing but when we get on stage, i do my best and am happy that if we do get any poor comments (we never have AFAIK) it wont be directed at me and i can turn around to the others and say "i told you". Just enjoy the gig and worry about it afterwards. Maybe record it if your worried so you can point out a few things your not happy with. I know its a very old cliché but unless something major goes wrong most people wont notice and will have a good time. -
The "ON" switch on an Ashdown......
LOL. Best laugh ive had for ages Also agree with the Octave thing. Never used it on all 3 of my Ashdowns. Separate inputs for Active basses. Why cant one do it all like some other makes. That XLR input on Markbass heads (for me anyway).

Upgrading the wiring and pots in a Squier CV P.
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
Resurrecting the thread with an update (and because im bored). Ive since changed the neck over on my CV's so i have the Jazz neck on the P now. While i liked the tone fo the stock pup i wanted a bit more growl so ive put a Thumper in. Ive had to file the PG as the cut outs weren't big enough. It sounds bit closer to my Jazz now, its lost soem of that vintage muffled tone and im happier with it like this. I thought that was it but i think i somehow managed to damage the volume pot, or more likely it just went on its own. If i wiggle any of the leads attached to the hot lug the sound cuts out. its working fine but i dont want to risk it cutting out at a gig so ive got a couple of CTS pot on its way this week. I also thought i might as well see what a Cap change will do so ive also got a couple of 0.047mf coming although i may not change them until ive gigged the bass with the stock cap in it this week. Im thinking ill leave the tone section alone as its all working fine. Overall im very happy with this bass and its going to be my main gigging bass for a while. -
I used to love the Tube, especially the first couple of series. Hmmm, there's a connection here somewhere ;-)
