1. First off, i haven't got the bass yet. Its ordered and on its way though. I do plan on putting a Wizard thumper in as soon as i can but as i haven't even heard the bass yet maybe ill not need to. Anyway, one thing most people seem to do is change the pots and wiring. This is one area i haven't ventured in to before. My soldering skills are fine, and i can follow the SD wiring diagram so im pretty confident i can do it. I think its the cap values im not too clear on. Should i get like for like or change it for one that will work better? So, knowing that most people use CTS pots ive found this kit on line and it looks like it will do the job. Im not really after recreating a certain vintage tone, i just want something a bit more sturdy and reliable, with better/smoother control over the volume and tone. I find my CV Jazz to be almost all or nothing so im basing my assumption on this. Anyone care to have a look at this link and tell me if it will do the job, or if there is something better i should look at. And if this kit is ok will i need to get some new knobs? Cheers. 2.
No I'll keep that one for now
No problem, ive just ordered one. I needed to get it out of my system as ive wanted one for ages.
3.
Hi guys So the scratchplate and shield arrived yesterday from Darren Riley- thanks again Jon and everyone else for your contributions. The Fender 62 RI scratchplate fits the Squier CV perfectly and looks so much classier! I also installed a 62 RI pickup, CTS audio taper pots, a switchcraft jack and period correct knobs to complete the pimping.
That new PG does look a lot nicer. Im hoping to order a CV P tomorrow and will also need to change the PG. Did you find out if the standard MIM PG would fit? It looks like it should. I had the PG off my MIA and also my HW-one and they both fit my CV Jazz, but i need one that doesn't have the truss rod cut out and the MIM looks ideal. Im also considering a black PG but i would have to see the CV P in the flesh first to see if that would work. Love the sound clip as well.
4.
Wow, they still have 2008s? I was told by a Fender chap that in the USA they had a massive lack of stock for a few months and were waiting to catch up, therefore any sunburst MIA Jazzes were going to be 6 weeks at the least....not sure if thats changed recently. You would imagine that they would have definitely had new stock since 08! Bloomin heck.
I did think it strange at the time. I checked each serial number and they were all 2008. I thought 2008 was the year QC went up.
5.
I thought there was an issue with a high fret on one of mine a while back...I changed the strings and adjusted the string height a little (they were WAY too low) and it disapeared, as did any fret buzz. I was pleased! Not saying that higher frets dont occur, as we all know they do. Luckily this time it wasnt that. I agree, for the new retail prices, despite my love for the new MIAs, I think they are slowly started to creep back to QC issues. A massive shame. Either that or im pickier as I get older, (definitely needs to be factored in!)
Well the MIM 70's classic i had for less than 24 hours (before the MIA's) definitely had a 11th fret that stopped me getting a low enough action that felt comfortable. I like a 2mm action at the 12th fret and dont think its unreasonable to expect to get it on any bass. The HW-one also has this but as its so far up its not really an issue for me. The MIA's were all 2008's, even though i brought them new, so maybe QC is actually better on the 2009-2010 basses. Ive got a bit pickier as ive got older although i try and keep it in perspective. Thats why im now keeping my sights on the lower end of the market.
6.
However if I'd shelled out a lot of dosh on a top of the range bass -I wouldn't expect to have any niggles & if I did I'd be a little, ahem, disappointed.
This is exactly how i felt with the MIA's recently. None of them were unplayable and i could easily have kept any of them but for almost £1000 i felt i shouldn't have to put up with a second rate job. My HW-one has a high 19th fret but as it cost a lot less im a bit more forgiving (plus i have no need to play that high so its not a problem)
7. Whats happening with the Fiesta Red P? Will that be up for sale soon?
8. Yeah, i kept track of where that bass has gone, i put that bit in as a long shot. Thanks for the heads up anyway.
9. As above. Im not using my CV Jazz now and fancy trying a CV P so would like to do a straight swap (or a bit of cash your way if you have Neil's old bass that has the upgrades). Local/London meet up would be ideal as i dont drive but im happy to post to UK mainland if you will do the same. Ill get some pics up at some point but its in good condition, no dents or scratches that i can see. There is a bit of tarnishing on the chrome hardware but nothing major. Actions is nice and low and i cant find any fret issues. I got it new in June this year.
10. This was the neck pocket on a MIM 50s' Classic i had. Bloody awful.
11. Well i haven't played the P so can't comment other than to quote the official specs. There is a huge CV thread on TB so I'm sure the answer is there. I do like the idea of the P having the vintage frets though. That's a plus in my book and the big reason I was going to buy Neils P ;-)
12.
Classic Vibe Jazz and Precision necks are identical btw!
Really? Not according to the Squier website they aren't. I checked a while ago and the nut width is different.
13. I cant see why a PJ cant nail the P tone 100%. As long as it has the neck pup in the correct position of course. After all, how many P basses sound the same anyway? I too love PJs (and BJ's ;-) but i do prefer a Jazz body and neck. And normally the neck pup is in the wrong position on these basses, although there are exceptions of course.
14.
Why exactly? The slimmer neck? Thanks
Yeah, for me a slimmer neck and string spacing makes all the difference. Saying that, some people find them cramped and/or just prefer wider so its really down to preference.
15. Another vote for the CV Jazz. Really nice looking basses. They also have vintage style frets which mean they are smaller than average and i find this helps get a nice fast, low action. The CV's also have a high mass (ie, sturdier) bridge that a lot of people, myself included, prefer. The VM series have Duncan Designed pickups. Never tried one so cant comment but i quite like the standard pups on my CV Jazz although i think a lot of people do change them. You really cant go wrong with any of these basses, i would say the biggest issue would be choosing a Jazz or a P. I really want a CV P but dont like the colour options. A P will get you closer to Adams tone but a Jazz will also do the job IME and is easier to play (again IME).
16. There is also large thread on TB about the take over.
17.
I thought they mostly missed the point.
So did i, thats why i just posted over there.
18.
+1 The angle the photograph was taken at is off or the B & E strings are out of kilter!
Maybe im missing something but i dont think we are talking about the string just being out, i thought we were discussing the fact that its out by different amounts over each pup. If the pups are lined up precisely this wont happen but as shown on the Teal one, both are lined up at the bottom rather than centrally.
19. To my eyes the B and A string look in on the Teal one but the other three are out. I guess at the end of the day its not so much the tone, but how much are we willing to pay for bad workmanship.
20. This is how it should look. I know this is a DJ5 and the OP posted to the updated JO5 but still, a jazz is a jazz.
21. wow, what an open minded thread. Why do people have to belittle others for liking something different?
22.
Dave Bass had a DJ5 and the pups lined up great. AFAIK, the other Lakland Jazz type basses they have in stock all have a similar issue, whereas earlier Laklands did not. Possibly they havent spec'd the new Hanson pickups correctly?! The thing is, the new CV Squiers rarely have this problem, so why should this? It looks 'ok' in the picture, but in the flesh the G string is actually towards the bottom of the last pole piece on the bridge pup...off by about 4-5 mm.
Yep, no issues with that bass at all. And then it all went down hill. The DJ5 had Hansons in it, the bridge pup was slightly longer and both lined up perfectly. I even played a JO5 just before i got the DJ5 and that too was spot on. Its really weird isnt it. It seems like a lot of the mid/higher end basses are having this problem, yet the cheaper ones are fine. My Squier CV J is spot on, as is my HW-one Jazz. My old HW-1 Jazz was fine. Even the MIM 70s' classic i had a few months ago was spot on, yet all 3 of the MIA's were out. And now Laklands. To be honest i dont think it makes any difference to the tone. And i would happily live with it (now) if the bass was good in all other respects.
23.
Oh boo-hoo. signed Angry of Aberdeen
Doesn't stop me spending way more than i earn though ;-)
24. In your case i would do exactly the same. My problem was just finding a plain black one. If i was going for a tort or pattern then i think i would steer clear of the cheaper ones. Its great you can just pop round too them. Looking at finishes etc on line doesn't really give a good indication of how things will look in the flesh. Its funny but living in the centre of london you would think i would have everything on my door step but its not like that and quite frustrating.
25. Sims are great but as you say, not the cheapest. I got them to make me a blank PG for my old DJ5. On top of the cost they charged, i also had the cost of sending my original one to them. I would use them again for a custom PG if i had to, but considering they wanted £45 + postage for a B/W/B MIA one i went to WD music and got one for £15. I really didnt see any big difference (or any IIR) between the DJ5 PG and the WD music MIA one.
