1. Did a 21st birthday bash on sat in Norfolk. We were dreading this originally the client had set a un realistic max budget for a 2am finish. We managed to get them to raise it but we still had cut our price by around £160. When we arrived at took one look at the house and estate we felt we should have stood our ground. It was a huge farm and a huge marquee. Around 150-180 people all in. Gig started very quiet but as soon as a couple of young ladies got up to flirt with us the evening kicked off properly. We played well, and i used my BDI21 on for the whole night, first time for that. My tone was one of the best ive ever had, and considering it was a marquee i was very happy. The host (who's birthday was also that night) managed to hack me off at the start of the evening as, without asking, he took our singers mic off its stand and tried to take it across the room to do a speech. He had turned down the PA to cut the music and was then banging the mic because he thought it wasn't working. All he could hear was the fold back at the other end of the room. But the audience was another matter. Way too many drunk ex public school knobs there spraying the dance floor with champagne and beer, turning our PA cabs around and generally being, well, knobs. And my drummer pointed out that they all looked and dressed like Jeremy Clarkson. At one point there were 4 of them around each mic and we had to turn off all but the lead singers. Normally we dont mind if the odd one or two want to get up and use the backing mics but these twats were fighting each other for the mics. They were in good spirit though, no real fighting as such and were very appreciative. Oh, the bar was free and ended up as a help yourself so some of them were just getting pints of larger to tip over themselves. The mind boggles But, and this is the good bit, for about 10mins there seemed to be a craze of girls pulling other girls tops down. Out of about 7-8 at least two were wearing bra's . what can i say. More mistakes were made in those 10mins than in all the other gigs we have played this year. Then later, due to the dance floor being soaked the same drunk girls were falling all over the place, and each other. Wet dresses all round. So not a bad gig, just a bit manic.
2. I really must try one of these at some point, although ill probably aim lower and go the SBMM route unless a good bargain appears on here. In the past i always thought i couldn't get on with wide necks but recently realised its not the neck, its the string spacing. I would point out that unless your talking about unplugged, you're comparing a active to a passive above, plus different style of pups. I found the B sting on my old Fender P5 to be just as good as my 55-01 and DJ5, although ive never felt much of a difference between 34" and 35". In fact out of those 3 i found the DJ5 to have the loosest sounding B, but then the P had more punch in general anyway. Also, the 55-01 was active which i found to to give it a bit more tightness. Certainly compared to the passive (EQ bypassed) tone.
3. Glad its finally hit the spot after waiting all this time for it. Ive never played one but do think if i ever go back to a SR it will be a 5 string. Ive always found i feel more comfortable on 5 strings, even if im not using the B string much. I like the narrow spacing you get on a lot of 5 string basses and find them easier to play than, say a P.
4. Ive had Chromes strung through body on both my 2008 MIA P5 and DJ5 without any issues. IME there is no benefit to doing this and can damage the string, it just hasn't happened to me. Then again, ive never broke a string either.

6.
The law of diminishing returns at work again. You can't calibrate "better" you either think it's better in some way/s and are willing to pay the dosh, or you're not. And now the caveat, those Squiers are frickin awesome! I have no idea how they produce basses (and guitars) of such quality for the price. It's like when Squiers first came out all over again. Great news for the consumer.
I agree although i do think the MIA's are also worth the money if you can afford one. They have a nicer finish to them, maple fretboards on all models, better range of colours, come with a nice hard case and rolled fingerboards. So IME the are better if you dont take the cost in to consideration, but its down to the individual to decide if those extras are worth it or not.
7. Well im sold lol. Im after Neil's red one for sale on here but i expect it will sell before i can get to him. If so ill get a new one. I would love to put a Fralin in it but at £140 new i don't think i could justify it.
8.
I've got them in my Overwater paired up with a J-retro and they give a big fat full sound, slightly retro, but they can snarl and snap as well. You can hear them on this little demo Here Setup: Ultra Jazz -> J -Retro (set 'flat') -> SM-1500 (set 'flat') -> D.I. into SD9 desk mixed in with SM-1500 through Schroeder 21012 through unknown high end room mike into SD9.
Just had a look at your vid. Thats a lovely tone you have there.
9. Thanks Rich. At the moment i have my Wizards in the HW and they sound pretty good, i might just keep those in for now but still want to try something more "rocky".

Im just planing on going passive bass - amp - cab. Your setup is so different to mine that i wouldn't be able to compare and not sure exactly how much the J retro, Schro etc has added to the tone. Ill have a listen though.
11.
I pick up a USA Jazz too, it was ok but not worth the extra money over the Squire. I am sooooo impressed with these Squires!
Exactly how i felt. The MIA's are lovely basses but not almost 4 time lovely than my CV Jazz. And as the CVJ has vintage frets i find its a lot nicer and easier to play. I doubt ill ever use the CVJ again (i now have a HW-one that i prefer) but i know ill definitely use the neck on something else.
12.
Just a heads up - my lady ordered me one for my birthday -ahhhh - but due to thomann long wait bought one locally. According to their email yesterday Thomann have gone and dispatched me one after the order was cancelled. If anyone would like to have ot for the going retail price I'm happy to pass it on and I'll cover the postage. It will naturally go up on the appropriate for sale section once it arrives. If its any consolation I do enjoy mine and am tempted to use it at my next band practice for a bit of fun
I'll take it if no one else has yet. I'll PM you now.
13. Cool, look forward to your views on it. I might order mine next week.
14. Cheers for the reply and pics. Its looks pretty good for a bass costing £260 ish. Think i might be tempted away from a CV P now. How do the blocks on the neck feel? Are they just stuck on?
15. Damn. Ive been amp GAS free for a few years now. Now ive seen that review i can feel the GAS rising quite fast.
16. Also open minded about other offers now. Maybe a Tonehammer. Not really interested in any FX though.
17. And how close can it get to a P?
18.
Did it!! I tried pulling out the spikes, but it's just the plastic rectangular cap that slides off one pair and then over the other pair right?? Amp still works anyway.
Thats right. Ive never done it but i do have the PDF that shows clearly how it looks before and after. It also shows how to change the effects loop so it runs in series. 19. After getting a HW-one Jazz i no longer need my CV Jazz, but as i dont get on with P necks im keeping the neck to put on a P when i get one. So, i know its a very long shot but i was wondering if anyone fancied swapping CV bodies. I dont really like the VM bodies (mainly the bridge). The body is perfect condition, the bridge has some discolouring but nothing that effects the stability. Everything is stock and working 100% I would also except a better, maybe MIM body (even without a pup) but must have a bridge and electrics. Nothing that needs any bodywork or finishing though. I would like to keep this all in UK mainland for posting etc. Cheers.
20. Im also a CV Jazz owner and love mine, although i dont tend to use it any more. For me it was a cheap way of getting back in to Jazz basses, as ive had a bad experience recently with a DJ5 so wasnt sure i would like the Jazz tone. I dont expect ill ever need to use it again but thats fine, as its the neck that im going to hold on to. Its one of the nicest playing necks ive ever owned and im not going to let it go. It will probably be on a CV P this time next month. Oh yeah, and my CV Jazz seems to have less quality issues than 3 MIA jazz basses i had over the past 6 weeks.
21. Its been at my house for a few days. My 6 year old loved it but it was a bit heavy for him so sorry about the dents and delay ;-) Glad it turned up. Im sure its going to be as good as the 2EQ. Oh, and big congrats getting that job. Well worth all the effort and time you've put in to get it.
22. Cheers for that. While the 25watt is hot enough ive been finding the temp has been fluctuating quite a bit recently. Sometimes it takes 30secs just to melt the solder. It seems it will only stay at its hottest for a few secs then cools down a bit. Probably broken as it used to be fine. The tip is clean and shiny though. To be honest i dont do a lot of this stuff but i can tell the last few basses have taken longer due to me having to wait for the iron to reach a high enough temp to do anything with it.
23. Cheers Luke. Ill have a look around the local hardware shops on the way to Maplins tonight. Funny you mention about not being able to heat up the parts. Ive been having that trouble. Not a big deal but it has been taking me longer than i hoped. I put it down to the iron only being 25watts so got a 40watt iron yesterday, ill see how that goes tonight.
24. No problem. I thought you might say that, that's why i waited. I too find the Sad a bit "boring". It does what it does very well and people swear by them but i think i want something that will give me a tone i cant quite squeeze out of my bass using just EQ. I did have a VT Bass for a short while but found that was a bit too much. So, Mike if your up for it im happy to trade, and if not still open to offers etc etc.
