Cheers Bob. yes, the neck plays perfect for me. I even like the glossy finish. I guess the thing thats bugging me is having to pay around £100 for a bass thats not worth much more.

After getting my MIA i don't think ill need my CVJ any more. I was planning on either selling it or keeping it as a back up (probably the latter) but after just replying in another thread i had the idea that now is a good time to try fretless. Ive always wanted to try it but could never justify buying a fretless as my main bass, and as i only use one bass it didnt seem worth buying a bass i wouldn't use for gigs. now i have a cheap spare i think ill give it a go. what i cant decide is should i go ahead and get it de fretted (probably looking at around £100) or try and swap it for a VM fretless on here? I like the feel of the neck and the way the CVJ looks so im tempted to get it de fretted but im wondering if the VM jazz offers anything that makes it a better fretless (other than it not having frets ;-) comments and suggestions welcome.

Squier VMJ Fretless, Squier CVJ or Tribby L2000 fretless?
dave_bass5 replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
My CVJ is a very nice bass if you like that sort of thing. Tone wise its just not for me (it has Wizard custom wound 74's in it at the moment). It plays beautifully, and build quality is very good. In fact its one of the nicest basses ive ever played. I just find the tone is a bit soft, even with the better pups. Im seriously considering getting it de fretted though. Its a nice bass but i dont think ill ever need to use it again, but i have always wanted a fretless so this seems like a good one to mess with. Hmmm, think ill start another thread about this a is have questions to ask. -
Definitely shim the neck. Very easy to do and there is a great sticky showing how to do it in the repairs forum.

Worst bass for me was a Squier P bass special 5 string. The neck was so wide i really couldn't play it and it put me off 5 string basses for a few years. Biggest mistake, well that would be my DJ5. Never liked the tone of it, even with the pup's changed.
right i'll get on with the making of the first sheet, i'll pm those interested when its knocked up. i have a squire affinity jazz pickguard for shape, will that be the same shape on other jazzes? or would i need to get a template off each?
Well i have a PG thats come off my MIA i could send you to use as a template if it helps. I would need it back but in no rush. One thing to be aware of is some basses have the trussrod adjustment at the body end of the neck so the PG would need a cut out for that. My MIA is like that but my CVJ isnt.
hi mate, would be very interested a pickgaurd for a fender jazz, drop me a pm thanks
Me too. I like a black PG on my MIA Jazz but i would welcome something a bit classier and not as shiny.

We used to rehearse at a place called the Warehouse in Hoxton back in the 80's. On a few occasions L42 were in the room before us and even though they were on the way up they seemed really nice, down to earth guys. I also remember Mark being on the Tube and being very impressed (i was playing keyboards back then). He has never been an influence, but i can appreciate his talent.
Straps locks, normal strap pins and a Levy's strap going in the post tomorrow. Unfortunately i don't have the screws. Also sending some Fender strings that i got on my CV Jazz last month, hardly used and will fit a P fine. EDIT: Just found the Dunlop screws although one head is a bit damaged.
Just posted the above, good luck.

New Road Worn Jazz - it's got a few issues

I'll be the first to say visit the gallery in camden town. In London it's THE bass shop. Not always the cheapest compared to online but they have a huge stock and some very nice higher end basses. You can spend hours there. Alex is the guy who runs it and will sort you out. Good luck. -

Im pretty sure i have a set of Dunlop strap locks (both parts) she can have if its any use . PM the address and ill send them out in the post if you want them.

Unless you can try both/all on the same bass im not sure you will get an accurate picture of how they sound. I have both a CVJ and MIA and each bass sounds different so no idea how much thats down to the bridge. I do prefer the Fender HMB as it allows you to alter the string spacing As BB said, the CVJ holds its settings, thats all i can say as well.
and Dance the night away - the Mavericks just to see if you can keep it going all the way through
I switch off on that one. My fingers know what to do which leaves my brain free to wander off in to a better world.

Lets get retarded by the Black eyed peas. Not a classic as such but i like it. Other than Keep on running and A;right now i dont know any of the other bass lines suggested in this thread and i dont feel im being held back because of it. My bands don't play them so i dont need to know them, although i do like to learn songs we dont play sometimes, none of the above really interests me though.

Good luck, hopefully it can all be sorted quite painlessly. -

Thats bad news, sorry to hear that. Regarding the pups, i had a MIM 70's last week that i also couldn't budge the pups. To me it looked like they were hard against the pick guard and that was stopping them from moving. Same sort fo thing, the screws would come out but the pup stayed where it was. I had to get a screw driver down the side to help raise it. Neck dead spots are usually where the note is too low or has no sustain, not really anything to do with fret buzz IMHO. Im no expert when it comes to setting up a bass, although i do all mine so dont take this as gospel. I would actually try to take out some of the relief, this will help get the action lower. Have you checked the height of the offending frets? are they sticking up? I find that when played in isolation, or at home, i can get a bit of fret buzz that can really bug me, as i like a low action (2mm 12th fret E string) but at a gig its never been noticeable. Personally, i would take it to the shop, explain your issues and get them to sort it. Good luck, and welcome. EDIT: wow, in the time it took to type this there has already been two replies. I must try to type faster. -
Congrats on your new bass, Dave. Now all you need is a set of DR Fatbeams to make it complete. You won't believe the difference in the sound! Do we get to see some pics of this new beast of yours?
Ive never used DR strings, but i was just looking in to the Fatbeams when i came across the Black Beauties. I think i might try a set of these next. If they last as long as they are supposed to i dont mind spending the extra.

Cheers Rich. The black PG was already on the cards due to me getting the Black bass so i figured i would still get it, and if i didn't like it i would put in on the CVJ. Im still undecided but as im going to sell the CVJ i might keep both PG's and alternate when the mood takes me. Its a shame the headstock has the large area of grain on it but i can live with that.
-
Cheers Guys. I got my PG from WD music. I ordered it a 2.45 on thursday and it arrived on friday. £16 all in. I had a reply from Sims and they want £44+ £3.5 postage so i went with the cheaper option just in case i didnt like black. But yes, i might put the Tort back on and see how i feel about it. Only slightly disappointing aspect was the routing under the PG. My HW1 didnt have any and looked good without a PG, not much chance of this going naked. There's even a big round hole for some reason. Just one more.
-
Well, after just one gig im convinced i made the right choice. Lots of tight low end but each note was as clear as a bell. This bass has a lot more tone than my old DJ5 and HW1 and i found i was using the bridge pup more than i ever have. I can certainly hear a huge difference between this and my CVJ, its like night and day. I also like the stock strings so might go with another set of these before putting my XL's on. I do have the Chromes ready but cant see me using flats just yet. I love the chunky tone im getting (that might be down to the Sadowsky pre though). Here's a pic i took earlier of it with a Black PG. Im not 100% on this look and i might go back to the tort. Plus the Tort fits a bit better.
