1. You do know there is a 10 page thread already on this topic dont you ;-) Squier Jag thread.
2.
I haven't tried a standard jazz actually, but the neck is undoubtedly the best part of the bass, IMO, very slim and fast! I *think* it can run without a battery, though i'm not sure. I don't see what's wrong with active basses, though the preamp in that particular bass is rubbish.
Cheers. No, nothing worng with active basses in general i agree. I love the tone of my Ray34. Its just that i have a Sadowsky outboard pre to cover that. I also dont want to have to remember to unplug the bass after each set or risk it going dead on me. I guess im a bit paranoid. And if the pre in this bass isnt that great thats another reason for not wanting to use it.
3.
If VMJs are such good value, so well crafted etc then why is a MIM at twice the price not twice the guitar? - leaving aside country of origin and brand name. In reality Fender need to look at the £500-£750 range and make them really worth it (like CIJs - why aren't they easier to get??????).
A bit off topic but i received a MIM 70's classic yesterday and spent a whole evening going back and forth between that and my CV Jazz (less than half the price) and the MIM just didnt play as well. Partly preference i guess and its a very nicely made bass but i couldn't get the action anywhere near to how comfortable it is on my CVJ.
4.
I still think the CV Jazz is prettier than all of these models....maybe thats just me.
Me as well. I love the look for the Jag neck but not the pointy horn. I love the look of the Jazz but not the neck. No, i wont be buying both.
5. After a failed attempt at a Fender Classic 70's Jazz im now looking for something else and just came across the above (i dont really pay much attention to Fenders). It looks ideal other than its an active. I really dont want a bass i have to worry about unplugging after a set etc. I know i can run it passive though so its not a big deal. A couple of questions. Can the bass be run without a battery (or a dead battery)? How does it feel play compared to a standard Jazz? its the neck im interested in. It seems like a standard Jazz neck so i guess i wont have any issues with it. Any other comments welcome Cheers.
6. I think ill go for the HW-one anyway. I used to have a HW1 and loved that neck. Ive found that im getting a bit more fret buzz at the 11th fret so i think ill send it back anyway. I just cant get the action as god as my CV jazz. Ive been playing it all night and do actually find it quite comfortable, but as soon as i go back to the CVJ i realise how much nicer it is.
7. Cheers Guys. gjones. I could do that but the whole reason for getting the 70s' classic was for the blocks and inlay. Lawrence. The pups on the CV Jazz are custom wound wizards that sound really nice, if anything i would put them in the 70s classic if i kept it. Its really having the bridge pup closer to the bridge that i like. Its has a bit more burp IMO.
8. After just getting a 70's classic Jazz and not really getting on with the neck im now looking for another "cheap" 70s sounding Bass. I love my CV jazz but find the 70's jazz has a nicer tone so i want something with the rear pup closer to the bridge. Cheers.
9. Thanks Frank. I am really trying to like this neck. I have requested a RMA number but as it wont go back until after the weekend im going to play it a lot at home and see how i get on. Im also finding it painful resting my hand on the bridge as the screws are quite high and scratching my hand when i play with a pick. I think a HW-one might be better for me. I definitely want a 70's style bass but maybe one with a flatter neck.
10. Well my Bass just turned up and i must admit the neck is a bit of a shock. I wasn't expecting it to be so chunky. Not sure ill get on with it. The build quality looks fine but the setup need a good tweak as there is quite a bit of excess relief in the neck. Not a problem though. Soooooo, not 100% with the neck but ill work at it. Ive got 7 days to return it so plenty of time.
11. Ive thought about that but i dont think it is. The action is pretty low (2mm at 12th fret on the E string) but ive tried adjusting the pup up and down to see if maybe that was causing too much pull on the string. The G definitely has a bit more power to it. Its funny because my other bass, the Ray34 has a weak string issue. Now, if only i could combine the two ;-)
12. Cheers. I changed the string and it was no different. The old string went on my Ray34 and it was fine. I rotated the neck pup and i "thought" it had cured it but not so sure. It does seem better though but that might be because maybe i havent go tthe pup at the same height as it was before. The bridge pup also seems to be doing it but it could well be my imagination. Im convinced its not the pups away. I think 3 strings is enough to tell its not the string. The Chromes really showed it up and im wondering if its a loss of higher freqs thats making it seem quieter. I does sound ok unplugged, i think. Im probably talking nonsense though. At the gig on sunday (with the XLs back on) it wasn't really noticeable although i did feel that more notes we getting lost on the D string than any other string. for example playing I feel fine up at the 10th/12th fret DA/D string the notes on D would just not be there. I do think at least part of it is to do with freq but im wondering if maybe the D string isnt seated properly in the nut or at the bridge. I have checked it all over as much as i can. Its not something im going to dwell on right now as i have a new bass arriving today, and i wouldn't hesitate to gig it as it is but i would like to get to the bottom of it at some point.
13. Just got a Sadowsky Pre off John. Painless transaction and a pleasure to deal with. Cheers John.
14. Cheers for the link Lozz. Once the bass turns up ill try and sort out what type i need. There does seem to be a lot of variation in the different models. Im also sure ill be happy with the bass. Ive not played that many Jazz basses, in fact im only on my second 4 string Jazz now, as ive always thought i was more in to P's as well, but im really looking forward to playing it.
15.
if it was me i'd just get a genuine Fender black/white/black one,at least you know it will fit.
Yeah but ive not had much luck finding the part number to order one.
16.
I'm sure you'll love it Dave. The neck is deeper than my '75RI but very, very comfortable to play. I had a good hour noodling last night on my classic 70s. Great playing and sounding bass. And the looks.................. Frank.
Yeah, the looks............. Cheers. Does anyone know a good place to get a Black pick guard, and what model to look for?
17. Ive just ordered one of these in Black from Soundslive. £519 inc delivered. Should be here tomorrow. I must admit im not sure what to expect over my classic Vibe Jazz, as that plays so nicely its one of the best basses ive owned. Plus i have custom wound Wizards in that. I did like the pups im my old HW1 and the 70's bass has the same i believe so thats a good thing. Ive not played a 7.25" neck before but im not too worried about that, as long as its a a 1.5" ill be fine. Black body with a blocked RW neck is my ideal look, and once i get a BAII and black PG on it im hoping this will be it for a few weeks lol. Its going to be a long 24 hours :-(
18. Cheers for the heads up Mark. They do look nice but way out of my price range. Ive got my heart set on a 70's MIM classic now. They only cost £520 :-).
19. I like Thunderbirds and Stingray but was never keen on Joe 90
20. Yeah, the classic. I like the idea of the smaller frets as well. I find my CVJ really nice and easy to play. Better than the DD even. Im not looking for any real vintage'ness ( I doubt thats a real word but it gets the point across), just something that ticks all the right boxes and the Classic 70s' seems to do that. Bloody GAS again. Might have to do a price drop on this soon.
21.
HAHAHA maybe just a finger then
As long as its not the one i use ;-) I think once this goes im going to go for either a HW-one or a MIM 70s' Jazz in black. I didnt know about the 70s' jazz until last night. Black with blocks and inlays sounds perfect. Just nee dot order a black PG. Not bothered that its a MIM.
22.
I so wish this was fretless. I would probably bite your hand off for it. I wonder how much it would cost to be converted and if its a good idea.
If you bit my hand off i would probably have to sell both basses lol.
23.
Can't say I didn't offer, hope you find something Dave.
Cheers Wayne. To be honest it would have felt wrong buying back an old bass.
24.
What are you after Dave?
There's something bugging me about my CV Jazz. It just seems to have a soft tone at some gigs. Maybe its because its basswodd. Its doing a great job but i cant help miss my old HW1 so something along those lines would be good, especially a black HW-one Jazz. A White CIJ would be perfect. Or a SB14 would be even better as i would hate to give up on the MM tone completely but i really cant get on with this neck, at least, not now i have a Jazz.
