Helix Floor/LT/HX/Stomp/PodGo owners' Club - Tips, Ideas & Patches
dave_bass5 replied to Al Krow's topic in Effects
Yeah, ive used that twice when my singer decided the key is wrong at rehearsals rather than when we are all (or are all supposed to be) learning the songs. After us taking two weeks to learn the songs in one key, i wasn’t going to bother changing this. They were only Christmas songs so not part of our normal list. -
I’ve had the v1 and v2 Paradrivers. Fantastic boxes and much better for EQ, but I always went back to my BDDI. I just felt it had the character i wanted. It didn’t help that I also had a Q/Strip when I got the V2 Paradriver. Thinking it could be a good middle ground between the other two.
-
This is why its a ‘thing’ IMO. This blanket statement is just not true. The V2 has a mid dial which allows the Mids to be independently adjusted. Thats also called a BDDI 😏. For those using it as a just a flat DI then it can be flat, for those wanting to use it as an amp sim , why would you want it to (which we all agree on of course) It doesnt have to be used as an amp sim though.
-
Might have been from my post, where i did say I use it at a low setting. This suits me. I do have a bit of drive to thicken things up but without the noticeable tone change you get when verything is running higher.

Cheers Paul 👍

Cheers mate. Its not perfect but a good learning experience. I even mixed it on my IEM’s lol.

We had a singer ask if we could record this for her, so thought we would give it a go. My bass player is on guitar and bass, me on the rest. Really struggling to get guitars and vocals sitting in the mix, more the guitar though. He always records direct to his DAW, no effects what so ever, and i add in the colouring etc in Cubase. I think i tend to over process them a bit. Good fun learning how to use all the controls though. . We’ve done 12 now, but none of the singers have used a decent mic (one used a phone). Would be nice to work with a really well recorded vocal at some point.

I loved the early version for years, but the V2 was just noticeably better to my ears. Slightly less harsh when using the Presence. I belive they made some under the hoods tweaks to the signs routing as well. The larger BDDI’s would have been perfect for me (ive had them), but after hearing the V2 i stopped using the others as i felt they weren’t as nice. I mostly use my BDDI with Blend around 9 o’clock, so not a lot of amp sim, but a healthily amount of active EQ if i need it. This seems to be the trick to getting the best out of them. For the first couple of times i had my first i had the blend right up and hated it with a rig. Now id never play without one if i was still playing Bass.
-
Yep. I had a BB2, which was a nice cab but lacked ‘oomf’. Same goes for the Frealess F112 i had. I just preferd a coloured cab. Strangely both BB2 and F112 performed quite differently, but both lacked ‘something’ that more than dial cab had. Ive been using a BDDI in front of almost anything ive used for the past 20+ years. Never too much Blend, and not for drive as such, but when my current amps sounded bland the BDDI always came in to its own. The secret is the Blend knob and keeping it low.
-
Good post. Personally I find ‘flat’ and even ‘FRFR’ to be over used by some people who think they need them. What’s the point of having a flat response? So you can colour it 😂.
-
Ok to both points.
-
What about with the Mid knob? With the amp sim off its just an active EQ. With bass and treble at noon its petty much (not exactly) flat. No cut in the mids at all, but obviously with the older version once you start adjusting low and thigh the Mods gets swamped.. The V2 has a Mid knob to help rectify this.

Yeah, sounds more like the software then. Thats not so much of a crisis I guess. Thats how i think of pedals, nothing absolutely essential, especially the Comp 😬. -

Oh, so you’ve decided to stop ignoring me now eh? 😃. I guess it could be a glitch but ive never heard of this happening with this device before. So this was using HX Edit, not on the Stomp itself? A bit worrying as it could happen at a gig. -

Ooh thats not good. Is it possible to re flash the firmware? Once you get it working do a back up to your computer just in case you need to do this again. Was this used? Might have been faulty before you got it. -

Yeah, thats a good plan. Actually I think i was wrong about using a mono cable. That was for something else. Yes, a TRS cable is needed. My dual switch came with quite a long cable so thats what Mande me think it was a guitar lead. Ignore me, its been a long day already 😁 -

Pretty sure I used a mono cable and it worked fine with my old Stomp. Not even a TRS cable, just one of my guitar leads. -
Well I said ‘some’, not all, but you have proven my point. So what if you got paid for your first gig, you also have done free gigs, and it seems they were done to help get more work. So not even you have always been paid. Point made.
-
Ive got quite a few hobbies that don’t pay. Ive never got the ‘spent loads of money learning to play and now i expect to get it all back, and then some’. If your doing it as a career this sort of gig won’t even be on your radar, its not a big deal. People can make their own mind up and be happy with that choice. I did one once for free and got 7 bookings from it. I loved playing in front of 1000+ people and made loads of money I probably wouldn’t have done had these people in the crowd not seen me. Yeah, that old ‘exposure’ thing. If you’re good it can work, if you’re dross of course its not going to get you more work. So when all these young bands are taking these gigs, it’s because they just want gigs and to play live, and hopefully get the experience they might not otherwise get. Isnt that something we have all wanted or gone through? Some people make out every gig they have ever played, from day one, has been an earner. Thats just BS IMO, we all started somewhere. Having been to many local festivals, I’ve often come away thinking ‘I hope that lot weren’t getting paid’

I agree with that, and ill add, IME, one with a decent set of LED’s. Ive had Comps over the years and as i was never really serious about using them i could never hear what was happening when tweaking the controls, at least not until i was at extreme settings. Even those like the Cali with its glowing single LED didnt really help me (probably my fault). Then the Becos came along and the LED’s are very responsive and i could finally see properly what was going on, but more importantly I understood what the main knobs did and how they interacted. Less knobs than on others ive had, but the right amount for me. Although i dont use a comp now, it really helped when i got in to home recording and using Comps.

Check the huge Helix threads on here for more info 😏

I’d say there’s you answer right there. Dont go chasing ‘better’ when you are happy with what you have. Keep it simple and concentrate on playing and enjoying your tone. Yes, there are better, much better, but (IMO) unless you know what you are looking for then stick with what you are happy with, at least for a while.

Ah cool. Yeah, Dom is a master of CB. I was already subscribed to his channel for the Montage/MODX synth stuff, so that was also a deciding factor to me going for Cubase, as i like what he teaches and his style. I got his 80’s drum set for Halion when it first came out, and was free back then. Ive also now got the same sounds for my MODX. Cant wait to start using them with the band 😂
