  1. Ive had comps quite a few times over the years. Always GAS driven by reading about them on here. I wouldn't say i didn't like them, more that i didn't really need them and after a short while id just stop using them. I dont know what it is about the Becos, but i feel im in control of what it does, and therefore i can get out of it whatever i want. There is some very good general comp advice on the Becos website as well, that even for me was easy to understand.
  2. At home I don’t bother with the Becos, I use the 3 band comp with some settings I got from thegearpage website, which seem to work better than the stock settings for me. Live I don’t use the Helix anyway, at least not at the moment. if anyone is intreated this is what I’m using as a starting block
  3. My Becos comp is the first comp ive actually understood how to use properly. I like that i can see what's happening and tweak as needed. Although im sure the comps in the Helix are just as good, i dont find them as easy to use. I like the simple things in life.
  4. But its a cheap way to get a good passive sounding 5 string P bass. Having gigged my active Sire V7 for a couple of years, mostly in passive mode, i have no issues doing the same with a P7 if i had one. I probably would use the preamp if needed, but wouldn’t use it much.
  5. Yes, its because i want to continue using the Beco’s (sticking with the one i have) that I’m thinking about another board. Im not sure what to expect with the Thump, but if i does what I’m hoping it will, I’d use that for a bit extra EQ and ‘magic’, and my PBDDI at the end for three types of dirt/OD (and more EQ) or Stomp. Won’t need an active bass at all, but if i did end up with a P7 it would be purely a passive instrument for me.
  6. Its always fun making these up. Expensive sometimes, but fun. Good to see the Zoom being used. Not touched mine since getting the Stomp, although i do plan on getting it out soon for the drum machine. Guess we all have a bit more time on our hands at the moment. I’m quite intrigued by that new MXR Thump pedal. If i get that ill need a small board like yours.
  7. Bugger, i can see a new board build on the horizon.
  8. Thanks, it seems very basic, but I’m quite keen to try one as I think I’d need to hear the magic fairy dust bit in the flesh.
  9. It does look rather neat though doesn’t it. Quite tempted to get one myself.
  10. That’s because its Thomanns own brand 😏
  11. I’m aware of the effect when these pups are combined, ive had a couple of PJs in the past, but this wasnt so much a loss of the mids, but a full on drop in volume, and only those two strings. Definitely the PJ effect, but not in s way that was expected. I did feel the P on its own really nailed the P tone, even more than the Yamahas.
  12. Yes, it could well be a ‘feature’ of these basses. Cant say I’ve noticed it with the Yamahas though, nor any PJ Ive played before. In hindsight I hardly ever use my basses in PJ mode so I could have lived with it, but it was not something I’d except to have to on a £500 bass.
  13. IIR it was when playing the open D and G. This produced a noticeable drop in volume compared to the fretted version, and only when both pups were on. Each pup was fine on its own. Definitely not a set up issue, and really only noticeable when played with a pick.
  14. My first (and current Sire) was gigged for almost two years, almost every weekend. Easily 30+ gigs. The P7 was faulty and lasted less than two weeks. Never gigged it, never even rehearsed with it. Was still debating another when the BB425 came up. You know my feelings about the P7 i had as far as liking it. Maybe when we all get back to normal ill try again.
  15. Nice looking bass. Looks wise it matches my V7. Have you tired loosening of the top part of the knobs and re seating them a little higher (if that’s possible)? What’s the neck like? I loved the one i had for a while. Will have to come over when its safer to. Your last statement.....nah, ill give it one gig if that lol.
  16. Maybe i just miss interpreted this statement If you adjust the mids above or below the flat setting it changes the set point for the filters.
  17. Dunno, the blurb is above. Thats as much as i know. I cant see whats special about it.

    Which Helix?

Need to change my vote. I voted for HFX, but now im back to just the Stomp. I dont really need to use effects live, so keeping both seemed silly.
  19. Anyone using or tried one? Looks quite plain to me but wondering if there is something not obvious. There is a short thread no Talkbass. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/mxr-m281-thump-bass-preamp.1443178/ MXR M281 Thump Bass Preamp The MXR Thump Bass Preamp is a tone-sweetening, signal-boosting, and altogether groove-enhancing machine. This pedal was conceived when the MXR design team and our in-house bass players discovered that the Echoplex® Preamp’s sonic secret sauce made for just as delectable a pairing with bass as it does with guitar. Using that circuitry as a foundation, the MXR team added a simple yet potent tone-shaping interface so that you can dial in the perfect bass sound for the stage and the studio. Crafting the sound you need is easy. The Echoplex Preamp circuit conditions your signal with a carefully balanced EQ profile, and this pedal’s tone controls let you take it from there. The Treble and Bass knobs cut or boost frequencies at 8 kHz and 40 Hz respectively, while the Mid knob cuts or boosts the midrange as set by the Frequency knob, from 250 Hz to 1 kHz. This range of frequencies was selected to give players maximum flexibility and minimal fuss when refining their bass signal. Whether you need to punch up a solo, boost your signal in a live mix, or sculpt more edge into the sound of a passive bass, the Thump Bass Preamp packs incredible versatility into an MXR mini housing. MXR M281 Thump Bass Preamp Features: All the tone-sweetening versatility bass players need in an MXR mini housing Combines the Echoplex Preamp with a three-band EQ and mid-frequency adjustment Punch up a solo, boost your live signal, or sculpt a more aggressive edge onto a passive sound https://www.prymaxe.com/collections/effects/products/mxr-m281-thump-bass-preamp?utm_campaign=privy_1156828&utm_medium=email&utm_source=privy&utm_email=%40%40%40%40070AObWOJvOCqJJIGcP295EqGkBKUc%2F4U%2BqkWWUw39MpmEXnzuZKXEuMHpUUbRzLLuJB00A0zquIjjo4tnhdWxhWGSaMSeQO4UTdzxCwOXxTB9jUH4a8wZk0LqEyvumOrxAMAx1zaKV5qtdmUlTEF3nd3uEFCgg9yyoF1jUTeqTZpXs%3D
  20. Thanks for taking the trouble to explain all that. I follow some, phase out at other bits, but seem to have my answer. I was thinking it was more variable in a controlled way.
  21. But T21 said its linked to the Mid controls. I realise the Mid sweep goes down to 40hz though.
  22. Ah yes, i understand that EQ settings will have a knock on effect with others, but im only talking about the preset freq that the HPF is set to, which T21 said moves. I understand the effectiveness of it will change, depending on what its fed, but surely the set freq doesn't change as such?
  23. I thought a HPF was something you set to a certain freq. In the manual it says its preset at 45hz. Sorry, i don’t understand why it would be designed to move in an uncontrollable way.
  24. I’m un following this thread now 😐
  25. Ive seen a few video reviews on this head, but this one is the first that has made me realise how small the head is. Either that or Dan has very large hands lol.
