I bought this from Harry about six months ago and sold it back to him not long who . regrettably, just 1 string too many for me, and I'm gutted. if it had been a 5er, it would never have gone anywhere. an outstanding example of Michael Tobias' work with all the bells and whistles. on top of that Harry is an absolute pleasure to deal with. p.s. It's a 635 not 636
Depending on the scale length and tension, I tend to go between DR 40-120 or 45-125. I like these gauges because they don't have a ridiculous B string, and there is consistency as all strings step up by the same amount. Unless you've got a 5 string with issues I don't really understand putting a telephone wire across the fingerboard (Massive novelty B string), and it not being relative to the rest of the strings.. 5 strings tend to have a different feel to the tension in the neck (obviously-more strings!) so it can be tricky getting the tension/sound you are happy with.
+1 Now using 40,60,80,100,120 sets. Going for a lighter gauge for 2 reasons. On a 35" scale bass, it means that string tension is perhaps closer to a 34" inch scale, but mainly because I think you get a better tone on the B string with a lighter scale non-tapered string. Similar to a taper core string, you get a better string break over the bridge (and nut too), so the string vibrates more freely from bridge to nut. However, IMO better than taper-core string which tends to vibrate too freely, clattering against the frets etc. So IME, for better B string tone (or at least consistent with the other strings), less is more. However, not all strings are created equal, so the brand of string seems to make as much difference as anything else. At the moment I'm using Dunlop nickel sets, with consistent results on all the basses I've put them on. DR have been good (Dunlop are as good but cheaper, hence not using DRs). Elixir Nanoweb were good, but not sure if available in my preferred gauge, and again are on the expensive side.
I'm in Hong Kong and that's no import duty or anything on top
i think you'll find that shipping from Hong Kong to the UK will incur customs duty and VAT charges, so about 23% on top of the combined declared value and cost of shipping.

and if that Hartke cab really does this: Frequency Response: 20 Hz to 17 kHz I'll sell all my bass gear on here for £1
-
ACME cabs are tuned to reproduce the low B fundamental @ 31 Hz. they sound amazing, but you'll need a decent amp to get the most out of them.

SOLD CoPilot FX Cubic Bass Octave pedal
If you haven't plugged it in by now, you don't need it... I'll take it off you!
get in line
I know EXACTLY what you mean. I was discussing this with someone the other day and they are in the amplification business and they did explain the science behind this perception of less 'grunt/punch/ooomph' from switching amps when compared to amps with big toroidal transformers and there is something in it... just don't ask me to relay all of the science behind it!
good - I was hoping it wasn't some kind of gas induced placebo type effect

cool, I'm looking forward to trying it out at rehearsal on Weds. so far I've been using my Tecamp (through the admittedly old and battered ampeg 8x10 cab), so I'll get to A/B them. The Tecamp sounds great, but I'm wondering if I'll ever be in a position to bridge it @1000watts into a 8ohm cab. The TF sounds more mid-present through the ACME cabs than the Tecamp does, and not as "wide" sounding. The class D heads I've tried all sound great, but I can't help feeling that they are missing something. I don't think it's power related or volume related. Just a certain "grunt" that I used to get from my old SWR Basic 350. Hopefully the TF will have it.

yeah, another 535 in different woods did anyone mention Celinder? Atelier Z was a very nice jazz. As was the Xotic I tried.

Backstory: I bought a TFB-550 new from Dave Funk back in July 2005. Maybe the first in the country? Anyway, I ended up selling it a couple of years later to Geoffbassist, probably for no good reason, other than going light weight. I've wondered since then whether I gave it a fair crack of the whip. Fast forward to last night, and I see that the Gallery have a used TFB-550 just-in, so I went up there this morning. It looked like my old one. "The swtich" was the old-style up/down switch from when it was an optional extra, and it had the optional rack-ears that I had also ordered with the amp. It sounded great through a Vanderkely 2x12, so the deal was done. After I got home I checked the serial number and as chance would have it, it's the same one I imported. So now I have a new amp day, with the same amp for the second time. Got it home, and it sounds very nice through my Acme B1's. Great EQ. Great sound. Job done!
