Who's Next? Need to decide who to write my next book on...
Take your amp to a BC bass bash and ask to swap it around through some different cabs. Most folk at these events don't mind, it can be an interesting experience for all. BC bashes are your friend
this. was just typing a reply and lost it, but this, and Gallery/Bass Direct or start buying blind and experimenting from the sale forum. at least you then can gig/rehearse in a real world situation.
Clearly no-one is expecting a set of rules. Was just wondering what others actually ended up spending on each. And yours is, of course, a bit of a cop out answer ultimately.
you say my answer was a cop out, and that "Clearly no-one is expecting a set of rules", yet clearly that is effectively what you asked for! so my previous answer was the short one from my phone. I would however say that it's probably worth investing more money in a "better" amp as the amp is what's driving/controlling the speakers. I say this based on results from upgrading my hifi amp, but I guess the same principle applies. obviously, the cab needs to be able to reproduce the "right" frequencies. (i.e. the ones that make the amp/cab combo sound good to your ears). to try and answer you specifically, the only time I've bought a "matched" amp/cab was a SWR Basic 350 and SWR Bigfoot 2x12 - both were the same ballpark - amp about 750, cab about 650 IIRC - this was back in 95. so a 54%/46% approx split. BUT, I bought them after trying the various (not many) options at the time, and they were the ones that sounded best to my ears. My current set up: ACME cabs (300 quid of ebay) and Tecamp Puma 1000 (800 quid from these forums), so 27%/73% split. I think it would probably be the same ballpark had I bought these new. The major difference now is the second hand market is much more liquid due to places like Ebay/BC and therefore far more options to entice and confuse! Anyway, it doesn't tell you much other than perhaps my tonal preferences. You might as well ask "what's the best [s]bass[/s] cab for metal?" If you're happy with your current set up, keep it, and your pennies. If not, work out what it is that you don't like, and use that as a starting point to finding a cab (or amp) thats more suitable, just because it's more expensive, it doesn't mean it will work for you. Apologies if I'm stating the obviousl, and good luck in your quest

buy what sounds good, don't think a set ratio of monetary value needs to be / should be the yardstick

off to New York next week...Music stores?
Gwilym replied to MartyBRebelMC's topic in General Discussion
absolutely - just wanted to know if there was a decent store there i can pop into without going too far out of my way and save a few quid on the UK price...
in that case, you probably aren't buying a guitar while you're over there? Rudy's and the other Sam Ash shops are all close together. Guitar Center might also be worth a look, thinking about it. The always had some nice stuff there too - non-US MTDs, Lakland Skylines a few Pedulla Buzz and Modulus Quantum basses, and sometimes some nice second hand stuff. Service in there isn't the best, but not too bad once you have someone's attention. Rudy's were fine with me playing an "expensive" bass in there as well, so it's worth a visit. Sadowsky may be more out of your way though, and probably not worth the trip unless you are seriously thinking about buying one at some point. What I would massively recommend is, if you're there on a Monday night, head to the Blue Smoke/Jazz Standard to hear the Mingus Big Band. They have a residency there every Monday. And the food there is very tasty "southern" style cooking, and a big selection of very nice beer. http://www.bluesmoke.com -
Just realised that there are some reasonable recordings of some of our songs on our website. http://www.borderlineartistic.com/ Me -> MTD 535 -> preamp -> Interface -> Mac/Logic. Not sure what preamp these recordings were using, it was either a Sansamp or my Demeter. Anyway, I've just been listening to the songs through my PC speakers and the bass has been mixed quite high in the mix (I would say it's just right!). So, it's a pretty good representation of my 535. If anyone takes a listen, I hope you enjoy it Cheers G

off to New York next week...Music stores?
Gwilym replied to MartyBRebelMC's topic in General Discussion
Sadowsky are up in Queens now I think. Having spent 6 months in NY a couple of years ago, it was enough to find out that there aren't any decent bass retailers there, and TBH there's much better things to do with your time while you are there. By comparison we are spoiled in London with the Gallery, Bass Merchant, Bass Direct and Bass Gear all near by. However, if you insist, then a visit to Rudy's and Sadowsky are what I would do. -
Hi there. I'm sure nothing is meant towards my ad in this comment, but I just want to make absolutely clear that this bass is bottom end of the right money. No offense taken at all, I just wanted to make that absolutely clear for my own reputations sake! Nice to see some Celinder history going on. And 10 Celinders sounds like bass heaven! Wow.
Yep, nothing wrong with the price. If I sell my Sadowsky anytime soon and this is still available I may be in touch
Have an admin bump - I think this might have been one of mine at some point? Needs a minimum of 600w for live gigs at wedding venues, but sounds brilliant when it builds up a proverbial sweat.
I don't think so. I bought it off ebay from a chap in Milton Keynes who bought it direct from ACME I think. It's also the newer "series II" version of the cab with the polyswitch on the tweeter.
I heard back from them asking me to reconsider this morning but my mind is made up.
hey Clarky, sorry it didn't work out, I know you've invested a lot in that band on many levels. Is it not worth reconsidering if the underlying issues can be resolved? Whatever happens I'm sure it will work itself out for the better. Cheers G

if you slap a lot, then it will affect the position of the slapping hand relative to the body of the bass, and your body. this may or may not be a bad thing for you. also the slap sound is a little different on the 24th fret IMO/IME because you're slapping over the octave harmonic which is more likely to introduce unwanted overtones that when slapping on the 21st fret. the other thing is whether there is suitable access to the top frets, no point having them if you can't access them properly. most importantly, 24 frets look better
UK MTD Dealer: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/
yes, but I don't think they are a dealer for USA MTDs. in fact, I don't think there are any dealers for the US made instruments in Europe.

hi Hoff, I've previously owned a sadowsky Tokyo, a precursor to the metro uv70, and I've been playing a 535 for a while now. played them both in the same musical "rock of some description" setting. both very different instruments really. IMO the MTD is far more versatile from an eq perspective. for me, the lack of mid control on the sadowsky is not ideal. I also prefer the neck and 35" scale of the MTD. I've played 2 different mtd's and sadowsky's at gigs and or rehearsal, and never had a problem cutting through the mix with the mtd, whereas I've not found it so easy on the sadowsky. however, the sadowskys were/are both great instruments, and I'm sure many would prefer them to the MTDs. downside of MTD is that different woods used can change the tonal character of the bass quite a bit. so, if you can, it's really worth trying out a few. they all have the MTD vibe though. e.g. my first MTD was wenge necked, and was naturally a little scooped in the mids, and it had the "classic" MTD slap tone. my current one is ash body, maple neck and is a lot more punchy/aggressive in the mids. the eq is so flexible, I think you could use them in pretty much any style, not just r'n'b or gospel, where there seem to be a lot of MTD users. hope that helps...
I have one of the ACME 12 cabs. It is lush. I could be persuaded to part with it because I am thinking about getting an 8 Ohm one (the power amp I want to use will only go down to 8Ohms)
nice! how does it compare to a B2 2x10 ?
-
Lower in sensitivity than the Midget though I believe. So the 3db advantage gained from having a 4 ohm driver will be couter-balanced by the loss in sensitivity.
yes agreed, if the OP wants more volume per watt, the ACME probably isn't going to compete with the Barfaced cabs.
-
The main reason is that it's very dificult to find a 4Ohm 12" neo driver on the market. I've had that same question a while back and i couldn't find one on the web... do manufacturers actualy do them?!!
The ACME Low B2 112 has a neo driver, and available in both 4 and 8 ohms. That is why I posted it up earlier

If I was in the market for a 1x12 - I would be getting this: ACME Low B2 112

Quick dumbass impedance question - 8ohm and 4ohm cabs together?
Gwilym replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hmmm good point about power mismatch. Think I'll give my scheme-y type scheme a miss! Thx gents
but you'd get around the mismatch by using 1 amp per cab, and slaving one amp from the other, then you can match the individual cab volumes with the master volume of each amp. -
Quick dumbass impedance question - 8ohm and 4ohm cabs together?
Gwilym replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
Is it possible to stack a 4ohm and an 8ohm cab and run from an amp that goes down to 2 ohms (like my Acoustic Image Clarus+)? Also, I presume it definitely wouldn't work with an amp that only goes to 4 ohms (eg, Markbass F1)? I'm sure its in the Wiki somewhere but there are 127 replies on the impedance thread and life is too short ...!
you'll get a power mismatch as well, even if your amp does handle a 2.7ohm load, i.e. the 4ohm cab will be louder - assuming the cabs are the same sensitivity - which in this case I think they are? -
Bass Strings for Fender Jazz 5 string - Problems with Floppy B
Gwilym replied to spiderjazz's topic in Bass Guitars
IMO/IME - a heavier gauge string does not necessarily give a great tone, though it may cure the "floppy" string problem. The bigger gauge can makes matters worse in the sense that (unless the string is tapered at both ends) getting a decent break over the nut and the bridge saddle becomes more difficult, which means string isn't vibrating as it should. A stiffer string with lower gauge (eg. a 125 lo-rider which I've been using) seems to solve both the "floppyness" without causing a "choke" at the bridge/nut, and therefore gives a consistently good B string tone. FWIW - I was talking with Martin Petersen at the Gallery a few months back, and he was of the same opinion, which might lend more weight to my argument
