hi Max, These Thumpinators sound very interesting - are they completely transparent? Do they have any effect tightening up the low-end at "home practice" volumes? I guess they might filter out the neighbour-annoying sub-sonics anyway. I'm guessing it would probably be quite good with my ACME cabs, just to optimise the work being done by my amp. The ACME's are tuned to -6db @ 31 HZ (i.e. the low B fundamental), and quite power hungry, is the Thumpinator going to clash with that 31HZ tuning in any way? Thanks! G

Bass Strings for Fender Jazz 5 string - Problems with Floppy B
Gwilym replied to spiderjazz's topic in Bass Guitars
DR Lo-Riders should do the trick -
I just bought a second hand bass F bass from Nikola Adamovic of Adamovic basses, which was a trade-in on one of his own creations. The transaction couldn't have been easier, and communication was excellent throughout. I'm not sure how much gear he's going to be selling on Basschat, but based on this experience, I would be happy to deal with him again in the future. If I decide to order a custom bass, he will be on my shortlist Deal with confidence. Thanks Nikola!
In that case the EBS Fafner has a semi-parametric mid which I love - I tend to leave the bass and treble more or less flat, boost the mids and use the frequency control to tune it to the room. I think fully parametric eqs are less popular as a lot of people don't really know what the Q control does and so ignore it or mis-use it, both of which will make it sound a bit sh*t. Like you say it's not that complicated but it's not something a lot of people are familiar with

Hartke HA4000. Had, on both Low-Mid and High-Mid, a Frequency Select, Bandwidth Size, and Boost/Cut. Worked very well.
The Hartke and the Fafner are both with "low-mid" parametric EQ's rather than "bass" parametric. Although the Fafner does go down to 50Hz, which is almost bass
My Eden WT400 has a semi-parametric EQ. It's the best sounding amp I've ever had
Yes, I'd spotted that - sweepable down to 30Hz I think? Although there is a separate bass control too?
Weren't older yamaha combo/heads fitted with parametric, B100 series?

My Yamaha PB1 Preamp has a fully parametric eq yeah. It's really handy. It's got the all important Q filter which makes it far more useful. I've been using it with a QSC RMX850, weighs 16kg alone but is thunderously powerful and barely gets warm. I am selling it though, trying to go down the 1u class D route.
Cool, I'll check out the Yammys..
It stops feedback on my DB. It is convenient to have it all in a 1U rack space. I could not live without parametric for amplifying DB for loud gigs. My B/Bb on my A string would howl all night long without something to tame it.
And what about for bass guitar?
BC'er Chris Kelly (chrkelly) is selling a Baby Blue combo for not a whole lot of moolah (£320) on the forum, Gwilym .. and he's in London too Here's the link: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1515842
thanks Clarky, I've already spoken the Chris about it - unfortunately by the time he got back to my PM I'd already bought another bass, so can't go for it at the moment. I'd prefer the Electric Blue anyway, which is the head only version of the Baby Blue.
-
well i can vouch for the SWRs - i love my baby baby blue. having the para eq really shows you what a little bit of boost or cut at just the right frequency can do. i've got a studio 220 head as well which has four (count them ! four ! ) bands of parametric eq. that's for sale btw
hehe, I've a softspot for pre Fender SWR, and I'd love an Electric Blue if I could find one
The bandwidth (Q) control is the bit that can make it seem that nothing is hapening or that EVERYTHING is happening. EA has semi-parametric.
So what's the main benefit on your Demeter? Or could you live without it?
-
just to say - neither of the SWRs you mention have Q-control on the parametric eq - you can adjust the frequency and boost/cut, but not the Q
ah yes, I'm actually not that bothered about the Q, so anything with a semi-parametric EQ that goes down to the bass frequencies would do.
-
Because if you are not a bit of a geek, a full parametric is somewhere it is easy to get lost.
Surely it can't be that simple?
-
I assume you're after heads with fully parametric EQs with the Q control?
Indeed. Not that I'm necessarily looking at buying anything at the moment, I thought compiling a list of them might be useful to someone. It seems to make sense that a bass amp would have this as a feature. Most do not, therefore I'm also wondering why that might be?

Where are they? - Demeter HBP-1 - Demeter HBP-600 - SWR Electric Blue / SWR Baby Blue - SWR Spellbinder Blue combo - Eden WT800, WT550, WP100 Navigator - Mesa M-Pulse Walkabout I think I saw one of the Genz Benz heads had it, but can't find which one so I could be mistaken. Any reason why is it not a common feature?
what in particular about it's location, makes it do well?
right in the middle of London. very convenient if you have band members coming from various parts of London, but still a horrible place.
-
Not quite on topic, but one of my biggest disappointments of last year was seeing that Enterprise Studios (near Denmark St in London) did not get demolished to make way for the massive cross-rail project. Many buildings in the area were levelled, but they literally stopped 1 short. It's the worst place I've rehearsed in London, but because of its location still does well.

F-Bass BN5/Alleva Coppolo LM5/Sadowski MV5 VTC : cut through mix
Gwilym replied to nonkel26's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd point out that the F bass is the only one with 3 band eq, and it's all about the mids if you want to cut through IME (although with the rig in your sig, I'm sure the Fafner would sort you out with either bass). -
Can you tell me the neck width at the nut; the string spacing at the bridge and a little more about the neck profile please?
hello Hamster, Nut width is 1 7/8 in / 46.5mm String spacing at the bridge is 19mm Neck depth at the 1st fret is about 18mm The neck is the proprietary asymmetrical MTD type, so slighly thinner towards the G side than the B. I'd say it's a medium wide, and slim front to back. I find it very comfortable. Thanks G -
beware, parcel force insurance small print does not cover musical instruments as I recall.

For Sale: MTD 535-24 ash/ash black sassafras top
Gwilym replied to Marlat's topic in Basses For Sale
Not 100% sure on the weight, I could weigh it tonight. Its not a heavy bass, but its not Sadowsky light either. I'd guess in the 4.2-4.4 kilo range but will confirm tongiht.
I just got a chance to A/B this bass with my ash/maple 535 - I'd say they are about the same weight, and mine is a shade under 9.5lbs in old money (about 4.3 kg). It's a very nice bass too (the pictures don't really do it justice!), but too similar sounding to mine for me to seriously consider buying it. Mark's bass looks a lot better though. Mark, thanks for indulging my curiosity this evening, and good luck with the sale. Whoever picks this up should be very happy. Cheers G -
Cool story! Aren't these the MTD basses as used by Gail Ann Dorsey? I had two MTDs some years back and I've also owned a pre-Gibson Tobias and they were all so easy to play...and sounded great too. Seems like a fair price for a quality 5 string and Gwilym is a very good person to deal with. Best of luck with the sale!
thanks Nik! I didn't know about GAD, but a quick Google bought up a picture of her holding a Grendel 4 stringer, while playing tug o' war with a dog! I think the early Grendels had "Grendel" on the headstock (as in the picture) and were also 34" scale. Having re-read my first post, I just wanted to also clarify that the upgrade to the US Bart pre and pups was done after the bass was originally bought (so not by MT). Cheers G -
hey Shep, sorry to hear about your troubles, and I hope this new bass works well for you - it sounds like it's going to be a (little) monster It might also be worth having your bass technique evaluated by an expert (if you haven't already), to fix any "issues" that could also be aggravating your physical problems? Cheers G
