1. Hi, I have a mtd 535 21 fret for sale. Not 4 string, but still might be of interest?
 2. Here's my old TRB5P. fantastic basses, and I'd be happy to have another one. these pics were taken by the previous owner, but show off the bass in natural light, and nicely shows off the burgundy finish. 3.
I'm sorry but I don't understand the quote at all... Can someone explain it for me?
a little bit more context: http://www.united-mutations.com/t/scott_thunes.htm
What does it matter if you're a bass player? Pick another instrument you can express yourself on. I express myself on the bass because I've been playing it for 25 years. Visualizing its fingerboard is simple for me. It's simpler than the guitar, which has that third between the G and B strings that throws me off. The joy of playing the bass is having my voice come out on an instrument; I don't understand how that makes me a bass player. I also can't understand how that makes me a chosen role model, because it's the voice that's important, not the instrument.
I liked this from another interview here: http://www.planetzappa.com/index.php?optio...3&Itemid=32
John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin taught me to mix melody and solid bass playing. Chris Squire taught me that good/interesting tone can take many forms. Jaco taught me that it's ok to play too many notes. Jean Jacques Burnel taught me that it's better to play rough and be true to yourself, and not try to play to please the masses. The Fender P-Bass can take care of many faults, and amplify others. Stanley Clarke taught me that it's not ok to play too many notes. Graham Maby taught me that you can be a nice guy and still be a great bass player.
The bit about Stanley made me laugh
Bc-Rich Wave.
thanks Shockwave. I just googled it. To be honest, it isn't the first time I've jumped to some rash conclusions in a dark club. I can't say that I like the look of it as much in the light of day The bass version of the shape is still much prettier than the guitar version though. cheers G
Bubinga- it is not often I will sit and just watch and listen to something on youtube for 3 minutes without drifting off, let alone 10:23, but that was, by a long way, the coolest thing I have seen in ages. Just cool in many, many ways. Oh, and there was a BC Rich looking in place too! Thanks.
+1 What model of BC Rich is he playing? - it looks fantastic.
 6. I've not been one to chop and change amps/cabs a great deal. Over the last 15 years I've had 2 "proper" amps (SWR350, Thunderfunk550), and 3 cabs (SWR Bigfoot 2x12, Accugroove Tri210, EBS Neo 2x12), before arriving at my current set up. This rig was motivated mostly by the fact that it's small and compact (easy to manage in London), however it also sounds fantastic. All things considered I can't think of anything (at the moment) that could replace... MarkBass F500 -> ACME Low B2 -> :brow: (and cuts through every time) The F500 is super light and portable, and has enough juice to power the ACME. The ACME is just awesome for the size. Trouser flapping low end, and to my ears sounds similar to a 2x15 Trace stack that I once played through at a rehearsal studio. I'm so glad I took the gamble on the ACME. Seriously, I have no amp/cab GAS at all at the moment, although there have been weak moments, I have come to my senses

 8. hi Chris. What's the string tension like on the MTD sets? I've just started using DR Sunbeam 40s to get a more flexible string at 35", so wondering of you had any view on the stiffness of the MTDs by comparison? cheers G
 9.
Hi, i'm new hear and have a question for the masses of technical genius' that are on this forum. I have just replaced my strings for the first time and i have suddenly developed a problem. all my strings are fine and all sound nicer and brighter then the old ones. However my "A" string buzzes. It buzzes when open and fretted and i know it's not Fretboard buzz. It sounds to me to be coming from the bridge. and raising and lowering the bridge has done nothing to remove this buzzing. Neither has lengthening and shortening it. Iv'e even tried tightening the bridge and still nothing happened. All help would be appreciated, as i have found nothing about this problem anywhere on the internet at all! P.S apologies for the bad pun in the title
i've had something similar happen in the past, and it was one of the grub screws in the bridge saddles (not necessarily the one on the saddle for the problematic string) that was loose and vibrating. it was just a matter of ensureing that all the screws we tightened so they were at least putting some pressure on the bridge plate. a quick way to tell is to put some pressure on each bridge saddle in turn while playing your A string. It could also be one of the bridge saddle springs vibrating due to being too loose. this has also happened to me
 10. bump there's not a great deal of info around on Pangborn basses. They were built by Ashley Pangborn in the UK, and there's a bit of info here: http://wikibin.org/articles/ashley-pangborn.html From that wiki page I'm unsure if this bass is a Warrior or a Chieftan, but I'm pretty certain that I read on a (now defunct website) that this bass is indeed a Cheiftan, and that wiki may be incorrect. Regardless, it's safe to say that this bass is the Precisioin style Pangborn bass, rather than the Alembic styled thru-neck bass! I had a query via PM, which I though I'd add here, and my subseqent response, so I was asked:
Have you played this bass? If so, what's the neck like? What's your honest opinion about the playability of it? How heavy is it? Is the back sculpted or flat? What do you mean by P "on steroids"? (I've heard others use the term when referring to jazzes and don't have a clue what that means, either! smile.gif ) What strings are on it-flats/rounds?
to which I replied
Yes I've played the bass, but it's been at the Gallery on comission sale for a couple of years at least, so I haven't played it for that long at least. So, basically, I can't remember the detail - I don't think the neck was like a tree trunk or anything, but I couldn't give you an opinion on whether it was more P or J. Not sure by what you mean by "scuplted" but there is a "forearm" chamfer at the top of the body, like many basses have. It's not that apparent on my pictures, but if you go to the Gallery web site, you can see it better on the pictures there. I think that generally by "on steroids" people mean the extra "oomph" given by the active electronics. Thats what I mean by it anyway, and thats my understanding of it. The strings were rounds. Pangborn basses were made by Ashley Pangborn in the '80's. Hand made in the UK. There is some info on him if you spend some time on Google. I won't include any of that here, but I'll try to post some addtional info on my for sale thread. Hopefully I've answered all your questions, if not then feel free to get back to me.
just reading this, i relalised i didn't answer the queries about weight and playability. I've no idea what the weight is I'm afraid, and as i remember it played quite well, and sounded very nice. Best bet is if anyone is interested, and wants to try this, is to head to the Gallery and try it. I don't have time or the inclination to post this either, or deal with tyre-kickers. This bass is what it is, and would be a great bass for someone out there. If you're serious, I can deal, but not quickly. Am busy with work and will be away for a few weeks. (note to self, don't start pushing a sale just before going on holiday - will remember that for next time:) ) Did anyone notice I didn't put OVNO or even ONO or next to the asking price?!! thanks G ps apologies for the rambling post, just been down the pub!
 11. right chaps - I'm selling this on behalf of a friend. it's been at the Gallery now for some time, and not shifting. probably because the price is too high at £500 - i guess it's difficult to price these things! i had a beer with my mate on Friday and after talking to him about it, here's the deal: if we take the %15 commission off a £500 sale, it would mean around £425 going to my mate. So, £425 is the maximum he will accept, and for the sake of complying with the rules, let's say that £425 is the selling price. However, if anyone is interested, then please make an offer and I will pass it on, he wants to sell this - so I imagine that any reasonable offer will not be refused. Also, if anyone has a view on the valuation on this bass, feel free to post it on here. Thanks G
 12. you must state a for sale price.
 13. bump, and to confirm that this is 19mm string spacing at the bridge, and neck width is 1 7/8 " at the zero fret.
 14. I think I forgot to mention this comes in the branded MTD Zero-G case EDIT: i think I'm looking for a sale only on this now. If anyone is seriously interested, I will entertain offers, so PM me if you're keen.
 15. I use (a bass specific) one I picked up on ebay a few years ago, relatively cheap from the US. I'd just started playing 5 string basses at the time - and there was a definite difference in the low B between the Monster and the 15year old Klotz cable I'd been using. Couldn't hear any difference on the other strings. The Monster was clearer/deeper sounding on the B - but this was listening carefully though headphones. The differences could have been due to a number of reasons, maybe any new-ish cable would have been better than the old one I had, and also the Monster was quite a bit shorter too. I've been using it since with no problems.
 16. nice - where did you get it? I've a Demeter preamp which is really nice, especially for recording. Used to have Compulator too, but sold it when i realised i didn't really need a compressor.
I got a Grendel 5 and it's the bargain of the year strung with flats it's become an all purpose #1 gigging anytime groove machine if the USA ones are that much better than the Czech I'd be more than keen for whirl.
always wanted to try a grendel - what wood is yours made of, I think I've seen them with various different neck/fingerboard woods. I think the main difference with the non-US MTDs is that they have massive competition at that price point. I've only played 1 when I was in NY last year, and I'd say they are quite different to the US models. IMO they'd look better without the fancy topwoods too. I'd be interesting to hear how they sounded with the US-MTD electronics/pickups in there.
 18. Joe - trade offer still stands - if we can manage the logistics
 19.
Double Bass. You can run, but you cannot hide.
you knows it, clart!
 20. I was just wondering if there's a way, either technical or otherwise to curb the amount of space taken up by user signatures? I don't want to switch off the feature entirely (as I know I can do), because I think the information displayed can be interesting), but neither do I want to have 1 users signature take up literally the whole of my screen from top to bottom, when all that has been posted is a 1 line reply on a thread. I'm getting RSI just scrolling down threads where 90% of the content is signatures, and often repeated numerous times. So, please please please can people show some restraint? /rant
 21.
I have a Gewa (http://www.gewamusic.com) that I like. There's been a thread on here recently that's got more info on other's preferences: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50277 Never had a re-hair done. The woman who works at Healy's (http://www.healeyviolins.co.uk/) did my teacher's, I think. You could ask whilst you're having your set-up done. He's very good. He'll also stick any strings you bring to him on it, which might save some cash. He's done set up + quite a number of little jobs on mine that I've been very happy with. Check out http://www.amateurorchestras.org.uk/olondon.htm - caution; some I've spoken to are quite snobby & think grade 8 is a "minimum". Let me know how you get on. This might not be the best time to find one as the friendlier ones are run by school teachers who go on holiday over the summer. YMMV.
thanks dougal - i posted in a rush last night, and hadn't really done a search yet - I checked that thread on the cases, and theres some good suggestions in there, plus yours, so it looks like I've got some research to make. Thanks for the healys link too, I will take a closer look... I think I'd already found that link to London orchestras - there were a couple that rehearse quite close to where I live - I guess I will follow up with them and see how I find them. Otherwise, if anyone has any first hand positive experiences, please let me know. I'm not really looking at doing much about it until the autumn anyway, I don't think I'll have time between work/holidays etc, and I'm sure most of them wind down in the summer months anyway. I'll let you know how it goes!
The best guy I know is martyn bailey http://www.mjbl.co.uk/ Check out his repair/restorations. His basses are also amazing. Sounds like you have a great bass so let us know how it goes
Thanks Geoff, I will check Martyn's site. Even more reassuring to know that he builds basses himself cheers G
 22.
Is duty on the item only price or the item plus shipping price? Also IIRC duty has to be at least £7.00 before it's charged (or has that changed?)
iirc duty is only on the item price, but vat is on the item+shipping combined
 23.
VAT pedant strikes again... it's actually going up on 4/1/2011 (first non-weekend, non-bank-holiday day of 2011).
LOL
 24. woof woof - mighty tempting
 25.
I'm considering buying a LM2/3 off the TalkBass forums. I guess I'd have to pay the 17.5% VAT and that's it? Or would it be more because it's electronics?
be carefull, a lot of Mark Bass amps (if not all) are not dual voltage, so I'd be wary of buying any Mark Bass amp not originally produced for the Eurpoean market. And yes UK VAT charges go up on 1/1/2011 - still 17.5% until then
