i suspect that best practice when playing quavers would be for the first finger to be on the beat. however, usually it's not quavers all the way, so as long as you work at getting a consistent tone, whichever finger you use, and can accent the notes appropriately, it probably doesn't make to much difference.

i've just started using 40-100,125 ("lite") set of DR sunbeams on my 35" scale bass. it feels like now I've got back the flexibility I was missing from 34" scale basses, and the narrower gauge feels better under my fingers too. Definitely would recommend the sunbeams if you want a warmer tone out of the box.

right, my double bass has been lying dormant for longer than I'd care to admit. I'm looking to get back on the wagon, but need to sort out a few things first and get the bass checked over. 1. I need a new decent soft case for it. Any recommendations? I think it's a full size bass, as far as I'm aware. 2. My (German) bow needs re-hairing, if thats the correct term! Can anyone recommend somewhere in London who's good at this kind of thing. 3. Ditto, a luthier to do a once-over and set up, new-strings etc, again in London or South-East. 4. Any recommendations of good amature orchestras in west London? If any one is interested, my DB is a 1966 Pollmann, and looks similar to the Busseto model: http://www.poellmann-contrabass.de/index.html although it doesn't state the name on the label inside. thanks! it wouldn't surprise me if the label was wrong. i once had a Little Mark 250, but the label on the back said it was a Little Mark II

hello all, In a fit of gas I picked this up on ebay a few weeks ago: I'd been hankering after one of these for a couple of years since I played one at the Gallery. Really nice fretless for the money, or even for double the money. 1 minor ding on the bass, as I was informed by the original owner, but I've not been able to find it yet! Other wise in 9+ (out of 10!) condition, as expected from a bass of this age (about a year old) thats not had a great deal of playing time. Some minor marks on the finger board, typical of a fretless having been strung with round-wound strings. I've set the bass up since I got it, truss rod adjusted, lower action etc, and not sounds/plays as a fretless should IMO I paid £380, and looking to recoup as much as I can (so thats what I'm asking for), but the price isn't firm, so offers will be considered (anything over £300 will get my attention for a quick sale), but please no trade offers. Very basic gig bag included. Pickup preferred in West London, but I do travel to North and South Wales fairly often. Also pickup possible during the week near St. Pauls/Mansion House area of the city. Prospective buyers, are obviously welcome to come see/try it. I'm selling because despite the awesomeness of this bass, I find that the string spacing is just a little too tight for me, I think it's 16/17mm at the bridge, and I've become accustomed to 19mm. Plus, I really shouldn't have bought it in the first place, as I knew full well that I was possibly going to splurge on a dream "mid-life crisis" bass. Anyway, there you have it. I'll try to get pics up in the next couple of days. Otherwise the previous owners ebay pics are pretty good, and nothings changed since then. Cheers, and have a great weekend! G EDIT: having had a think about it £325 takes it, collected from me in London.
And lastly, but this is a very big if on the sale of this item 3: 1990 Trace Elliot GP12 Series 6... I'm not putting much of a description apart from that it's in perfect condition (one tiny tiny scratch on the front of it) and it's been regularly maintained professionally. Not putting a price either, this is purely for offers.
Read the T&C. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=SR&f=19 - if this is for sale, you must post a price.

Recommendations for fretless strings? I'm a fretless virgin!

i'd be surprised if even rosewood fingerboards will wear that much even with round wounds on. i think that potential problem is a little over stated? never noticed a problem with mine anyway. -

What strings do you use on a five string 35" scale bass????
Gwilym replied to voxpop's topic in General Discussion
i just put a set of DR Sunbeams 40 - 120 on a 35" scale bass. They don't feel very low tension, but they're an improvment on the 45 - 125. And the B string still sounds great. I think the main difference is just feel of the narrower gauge, rather than the difference in tension. -
I think sig basses might ok if they are good basses and have had a substantial design input from the signatory, e.g the Fender Roscoe Beck, Ibanez Gary Willis, and I'm sure there are a few more examples. However, just spending a chunk of cash on a sig P-bass which is basically just a P bass seems a bit odd. I've nothing against P basses though, I'm just using it as an example of a well established design that probably isn't augmented in any way by the involvement of some name bass player.

what Shockwave said - if you want a really nice fretless for the money get the GW. I'm sure you could find one used too if you didn't want to fork out for a new one. I played one at the Gallery once and it really was *almost* as good (sounding) as a F-Bass fretless which was 5 times as much, and arguably had better playability especially if you like sightly narrower string spacing. -
What is the right trade? I have a nice Modulus just waiting for a new owner...
hi! pretty much this:
I would consider trades on this, with cash either way if appropriate. However, I think if I were to trade it would have to be meet-up involved, rather than shipping. Preferred trades would be another MTD, a Smith (both either fretted or fretless), or fretless FBass. 5 string only on fretted, 5 or 6 for fretless.
I've seen your Modulus around on the forum, and it does look very nice, however I'm not keen to trade by post for a number of reasons. Also, my main motivation for this sale is to get cash for a MTD fretless, so anything that comes my way in a trade is likely to be going straight out again. I would be willing to trade for a bass + cash as long as I consider that the bass would be easy to move on. This probably means a 4 string bass, and where I get at least £1000 in cash, but again, I would be keen to play it before committing to a trade. Realistically, it limits a trade to a local deal. cheers Gwilym
