er...I'm not implying anything.
really?
there are many BSR models between it and the BSR-GN/EG models
I'm obviously reading into this too much then. Never mind.
Personally, I wouldn't pay more than 1200 quid for a used BSR-J. They're nice basses but there are many BSR models between it and the BSR-GN/EG models which top out at roughly 2000 quid used.
While you are of course free to set yourself any budget you like, it doesn't mean you'd get one at that price, unless it was damaged or otherwise in poor condition - the one with the headstock damage above being a prime example. You also seem to imply that it's the "bottom of the range" Smith, which I'd dispute. Yes it's simpler and less exotic and therefore reflected in the price, but a new one is still only around 15% "cheaper" than the BSR-GN/EG models that you mention.
Lovely .. Almost too beautifull good and honest price for one of the best basses on the market !
thanks! just a little bump - potentially still available for the right trade, or until my bass funds get back up to a decent level.

I saw LM with JZ a couple of times, and he is an awesome bass player. However, I think that he's obviously heavily influenced by Jaco. Maybe that's how JZ wanted him to play, but it'd be nice to hear a bit more of his "style", whatever that is.

In two: 1. I had a very brief chat to Sue Mingus last year. 2. She was married to Charles Mingus.

hi David, here are my thoughts....
This seems to be the 'budget' USA-made model, with a street price (new) of around $3500 - but no idea what sort of value they hold here; the bass seems goood overall, but there's obvious wear above the neck-pickup and a more serious repair to the headstock edge (lower) below the 'B' Tuner.
It looks like the current street price is $3850 (according to the horse's mouth: http://www.kensmithbasses.com/models/bsrj/bsrj.html), so cerainly not a budget bass
The BSRJ was Ken's first attempt at a less bling and J bass version of his US-made basses. They are very well made, as are all of Ken's US basses, have a good core tone and maintain the Smith reputation. They don't sound like his basses that have the soapbars in them, but you wouldn't expect them too. As to a price, personally, given their bolt on nature and simpler woods etc, I would say something less than £2k tops for a mint condition one.
Price wise it's a little difficult to judge as they don't come up for sale that often, but this one did just sell for $1700 (a very good price IMO) on TB, so around £1500 (factoring shipping + vat and duty into the UK). I certainly wouldn't sell mine (which I decided to keep) for any less than that (and it's certainly not in mint condition, but does come with the original Smith case and case candy - wax, Smith leather strap etc.). Given the damage to the headstock, I'd be looking for a hefty discount, as it might be difficult to move the Smith on afterwards? Regarding the bass itself, I really like it. Build quality is fantastic, and playability is awesome. The neck is quite slim and the string spacing at the bridge is 18mm (which is the standard on Smiths), so it's very comfortable to play, and there are no problems with the B string. In fact I haven't got a bad word to say about it - I decided to buy it within 2mins of playing it. Regarding comparisons to other Smiths, I've played a three other Smith basses, all of which were a lot more exotic neck-thru models, and all with the Smith soapbar pickups. Sound wise, the J model sounds different, but still has a Smith-like tone. I'd say it sounds a lot warmer than the others, but still with plenty of growl to the tone. I perfer my 5J to the others I've played - just a matter of taste though. This one also recently sold on TB for a similar price to the one I mentioned above, but the positive comments from some other players seem to echo my experience with my Smith. That's about as much as I have to say, so I'll just show you mine Cheers G
Ok im needing new strings and would like some input... I have had Elites, Rotos, La Bella's, XL,s, .. ive come to the conclusion that im a DR man..ive been using the Marcus Miller set...they just sound so good and last so long...very bright though.. Any other recommendations in the DR range that you have tried...that i should try..im torn between the smoothness of nickle and the snap of stainless... Anyone tried Slinky's on a jazz bass
was just thinking that if Molan didn't change the strings on that Sei Jazz after he bought it from me, it may well have been Hi-Beams on there when you got it.

i've always liked the Hi-Beams - and have been through a few sets, all of which have been consistent. If you haven't seen this before, take a look (and listen to the sound clips): http://www.bassemporium.com/newsletters/0609newsletter.html Based that I have a new set of Sunbeams waiting to go on my MTD
I'd love to buy them, but you'll have to lower your price - they're only £220 new!!
from where? Bass Direct? £220 plus £7 quid shipping. So £227. Mine are brand new in the box, pickups still sealed in the plastic bags. If you don't want to save yourself £27 on a new set thats fine by me. And I'll include postage/insurance. Of course you could have always PM'd me an offer. However I think you should now go and read the the Basschat Rules and Guidelines for the Marketplace which state quite specifically:
5. If you believe the price of the item is too cheap/expensive, then please PM the seller as to why. Do not ridicule or undermine the seller by posting how much you think it's worth or how much it can be gotten for elsewhere, the laws of supply and demand will determine if the item sells at that price.
and then go and sit on the naughty step thanks!

it's not the limit per se, it's the fact that you can't start composing your next pm until the 1min is up, rather than not being able to send the next PM until the minute is up. i did check the old PM's but didn't see the distinction being made.
Wow this one is a beauty Gwil For anyone who doesn't know Gwil I have to say he's a top bloke who really knows his basses - everything he has is absolutely top drawer
thanks! Great price!
Yep, a shame they seem to be gone for good...
Hi Gwilym, MTDs are amazing instruments. Just out of curiosity, what's your other MTD and how does this one differ soundwise? I've never played one in the classic wenge/poplar wood combo.
hi Chris, here's the pr0n thread on my other one: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=61071 it's ash body/maple neck. i think the poplar wenge is just naturally brighter. with nickel strings it sounds a lot closer to the ash/maple bass. There's defintely a MTD sound that is apparent in both of them, and I suppose that's the pickups and elecronics. Some would say its a great bass for slapping, and it is, but I've only ever played it fingerstyle in a band, and it's always been spot on. I think I'm less inclined to go for that bightness of tone when I play (or rather have no need for it), and I like a more vintage slap tone than the modern hi-fi of the MTD. (I think the best slap tone I ever heard was on the old Wal Pro2e that I sold to silverfoxnik a few years back) Anyway, you're welcome to come and try it for yourself if you want. cheers!
i have to confirm gwilym is a top guy to deal with, i enjoy his mint fbass now ID mine Bass had the original string on it!. He has 5 basses and play them all so i am sure this is in mint condition and top deal
cheers Manos, glad to hear you're digging the F so much - it is a very sweet bass.

i find this annoying. if I send a PM, there is a 1min limit applied until I can send the next one. but thats not quite the case because this limit kicks in when I hit "reply" to a message, or try to create a new one, rather than when I want to "send" it. i.e. there is a 1min wait until I can compose my next pm or pm reply, not a 1min limit on when I send a PM. got that? cheers G
Intonation???
definitely check the intonation first. the harmonic at the octave/12th fret should be in tune with the fretted not at the octave.
