1. if you're changing to lower gauge strings that have a lower tension, it also means theres less pull on the neck, so there will be less bow/relief in the neck. this makes it more likely that your strings will start buzzing, so you need to also consider tweaking your truss rod to keep the same relief on the the neck.
Im very eagerly awaiting sound clips of that ken smith!!! simply gorgeous,is that a bit of quilt maple in the middle with maple wings? you got me GASSING!!! again- all the best - lee
hi Lee, yeah, the whole body is maple - not sure if it's what you would call quilted though. at least it's quite different to what I would visualise when talking about a quilted top. I thought I had some more pictures at hand that I could link in showing more detail, but I'll have to get that done next weekend too. cheers G
  4.
That top really is lovely - well worth the effort! If this was a 5 I'd be seriously tempted, maybe it's time to brush up my C string skills
used to have a MPG Level 5 - which funnily enough is back in the US now and up for sale on TB at the moment. anyway - it was/is a really nice bass, as is this one too from the looks of it! have a free bump. not that you need it - Barrie has probably bought it by now

Barrie, Jack, Nik - thanks for the kind words! The KS is indeed a belter. I knew within a minute of playing it that it would be mine It has the Smith tone, but is much warmer sounding than other Smiths I've played. That said - it tonally doesn't quite fit with the band I've been playing with, and consequently I've only played it at home occasionally in the past 3 years. It needs servicing on a more regular basis than that! I guarantee if someone picks this one up, they won't be disappointed Right, I'm pretty certain I've replied to all the PM's that I've received - if you're still waiting for a reply from me, I guess something got lost in the ether, so please let me know. Update on trades: just to say that the only trades I will consider are a F bass lined fretless 5 or 6 string. Or a 535 mtd without a wenge neck. (bonus points for a 24 fret neck, matching truss rod cover, rosewood finger board, or alder body or maybe a fretless?). By the way, I will record and post sound clips of all these once I've had the chance - in around a week or so I guess. cheers G
Gwil, what on earth are you thinking!? I hope the GAS is truly serious enough to warrant letting those three beauties go?
hey Gareth, partly the realisation that I've only got two hands and don't want to be a "collector", and I guess a clearout of sorts pending a potential change in circumstances. GAS was also a driving factor, but it turns out I've been too slow in that department - I found out this morning and evening that the 2 basses I was GASsing for are either sold or on hold. Not a surprise, one was a spanking new NYC Sadowsky, and the nicest Sadowsky I've had the pleasure of playing. Should have been quicker off the mark and I'm surporised it lasted as long as it did. Any interest in the Smith? I know you like 'em
ARRGH..I want that Ken Smith!!!!!
Do it Cheltenham would be a easy spot for personal delivery
Hmmm... can i see some more pictures from the MTD ? Which serial number please ? Guess you'll like the sound of the maple / rosewood neck combination more ? Looking forward to your answer, greetings, Dave
Dave, I am about to PM you...

    RIP R,5,R,5...

Very sad news - RIP Nicola, a really sound guy. I met him twice, when I bought a Wal fretless from him, and when he was checking out a bass I was selling. My condolences to his family and friends...
  10. hi - it is at the moment, got a couple of people interested, but I can't do much about it till I get back to the UK on the 17th July. it is a 4ohm cab as things stand, I will need it for a gig on the 1st of August, so unless I can organize a trade, or three way deal before hand where I end up with another cab to replace it, then any deal will have to wait until after the 1st August. cabs I'd be interested in would be a quality compact and lightweight 1x15 (or maybe 1x12) cheers G
  11. my take on this is that it's not about the quantity but whether you play them or not. I've never owned a bass that I wouldn't take to a dingy rehearsal space or play at a gig. if you use them for what they are intended, and you enjoy them then fantastic.

    I'm off to NZ.
Yeah, thats Quail Island. You might not want it so much after learning it was the site of a former leper colony and quarantine station though. I've also just had a job offer in the last hour. I'm still negotiating the terms and salary but its been a dramatic day with learning of Nick's passing, to say the least.
i was just thinking that looked like it might have been around Banks Peninsula... google earthed it, and so it is... nice photo, beautifull countryside...
  13. cool, thanks for that... i bought the cd a few weeks back, but always good to have a few extra tracks! I saw him a few years back in Ronnie Scotts, awsome band, awesome player/bandleader.
  14. update: back in the UK in 3 weeks time, so this may become available again, if there is any interest...
  15.
Sorry to get all pedantic and anal, but the term 'Olive Wood' almost certainly refers to a variety of Ash. The Olive tree proper is not normally suitable for use as a tonewood, whereas Ash (a member of the Olive family) is a well-known and very widely used tonewood. The grain on the back of the body looks like Ash to me. The term 'Olive Ash' actually refers to a particularly distinctive type of grain rather than a species of tree. Whatever you want to call it, it's a beautiful instrument - every once in a long while I wish I wasn't lefthanded.
the olive wood is the top/facings. the body/back is ash.
  16.
when you understand why the C string on a 6 string bass is a C, and not a B, as on a guitar.
Given that a guitar is usually tuned EADGBE, and a 6 string bass usually BEADGC, then the bass C string would be the equivalent of the guitar top E string, and the bass G would be the equivalent of the B on a guitar?! Back on topic. I would say you know when you are a bassist when you learn to spend more time practicing and playing bass than browsing internet web forums, otherwise it's just pretending
  17.
I did have the phrase 'olive-wood' stuck in my head for some reason but thought I might have imagined it!
it's because thats what I told you and is also what I was told by the fellow who sold me the bass originally, but it's not that important, what is important is that it looks awesome!
  18. nice pictures - great bass A shame you are letting it go...
  19. what does the B string sound like acoustically? i've always found it a good yardstick to have a listen to the bass unplugged with my ear up against the body of the bass. if it still sounds iffy, you'll know it's either the string, setup or the bass itself. personally, i've always found that the string makes the most difference, not that i've experimented that much. as others have mentioned, make sure the string breaks properly over the bridge and nut. EDIT: I wouldn't get bogged down with amplification either - like many things, it's garbage in garbage out. a decent B string would sound better through a Behringer (which I think are quite decent amps I might add), than a crappy B string through a boutique amp - probably!.
  20. i think your Custom Nouveau 5 looks fantastic. visually it has elements that remind me of a few other bass designs but still very much has its own character and it certainly appeals to me
  21. i got together with Ari once and played the Celinder J Update 5 that he had at the time back to back with a Atelier Z 5 and what was then my Sadowsky Tokyo 5. Each bass I think intended to be a "70s" style jazz. I thought the Celinder was just too bright in comparison to the other two basses, definitely more modern/hi-fi sounding. Sound wise the Atelier was my favourite, marginally, over the Sadowsky, and I preferred both quite a bit more than the Celinder. The Celinder was still a great bass, and well put together, but I'm not sure what all the fuss is about

  24. I possibly need this for a gig on the 3rd of April, after which it will be available for sale. I'm heading abroad in April with work for a few months, so I won't need it while I'm away. In very good condition, bought a couple of months ago on this forum. I've used it for 2 gigs and it sounds great. No issues other than the fact that the tweeter contol knob on the back of the cab is missing. I mean the plastic knob that sits on the metal pole bit. The control works fine! If it's not gone before I leave the country then obviously I'll have to withdraw it £399 gets it - a lot of cab for the money. Pick-up only from West London (near Hammersmith) or I could deliver for cost of petrol depending on where you are, and if I have the time. Time is not on my side I'm afraid! Here's the original FS thread - it's looking even better now as I've given it a good hoover. Please note: I am away for a week from Saturday so probably won't be able to respond to PM's in that time. Snowboarding is much more fun than the internet cheers G PS if you need photos, you will have to wait until I get back on the 29th March.
  25.
ah nooooo!.... more head-wrecking - Why did I spot this!?!?!?!?.... And now it's active as well...  ...Hi Gwil, by the way, Sean
Well, i'm going to bump this again if anyone is interested in this then you better be quick. It looks like I'll be away with work from mid April for 3 months and won't be in a position to do any deals, so this will either go into "storage" or maybe on a commission sale at the Gallery. Willing to consider reasonable offers (£999 will do it!), as I can use the cash to buy a bass where I'm working so I can play while I'm away, but definitely no trades now, sorry. Still pickup only from West London too. cheers G
