sorry if you can't read my writing (ran outta' staff paper), or there are mistakes, I normally write things in treble clef. But yeah, this should be pretty close, since there's a lot of improv in the song there are some variences but...um..I wrote in where the improv solos go. Thanks for asking this question it was fun to figure out this song. Just a side note..since I don't really know a whole lot about bass, I think you might have to move it up an octave if you don't have a 5 string.
cool, thanks for posting that! I've been meaning to learn it for a few years now but never got around to it. I love Eddie Harris' playing and was priviledged enough to see him play live back in early '96 at "The Rhythmic" in Islington - he passed away later in the year... seems a long time ago now. He was totally on form too despite his advancing years. Eddie Harris! Eddie who?! http://www.eddieharris.com/

hey Mac here's a sound sample of your Shuker - hope you don't mind me posting it up here for you. It's quite boring really! Straight scales, up and down. I recorded it at the time as a favour for Dood who wanted to hear what the EMG pups sounded like. Consequently IIRC the eq was set flat, and I started on on the neck pup, both pups, then bridge only. cheers G
It's like this, I have 3 basses, a 4, 5, and 6, but because of the band I play in the 4 is tuned BEAD, so I don't have a proper bass. So I'm wanting to trade my custom made Shuker 6 string (EMG's 3 band eq) for a 4 of similar quality. Perhaps a Bongo, but open to suggestion and offers. I've had it for 2 years, and it has mostly been living in a case. Gwil had it before me, and the guy before him bought it from John Shuker (I think that's the history, I'm sure Gwil will correct me, or maybe Dood as he knows all things Shuker!). The action is incredible and the neck is amazing, the Shuker heritage can be felt. There are a couple of dinks on the body, nothing major, and I will have it with me at the South East Bass Bash.
hey Mac shame you're having to let this go... I was indeed the second owner (The guy I bought it from had bought it direct from Shuker), and I had it long enough to realise that I didn't need or want a 6 string fretted bass (at least not at the time anyway!) However, as you might expect it is a very well made bass and sounds fantastic, quite a mid heavy modern tone, which may well be the EMG DC40 pups cos it sounded very similar to the MPG Level5 that I had at one point. The electronics are the standard(?) Shuker 3 band eq I think, it balanced very nicely, not neck heavy at all, and wasn't particularly heavy either. Oh and i think the string spacing at the bridge was quite narrow ~16/17mm ? Which i liked. Hope that helps some cheers G

i'm sure people aren't as hen pecked as they make out. probably just an irreverant remark most of the time, and maybe a bit of sales patter if it's in a for sale thread. after all, a seller is rarely going to say "I'm selling this cos I don't like it".
Has anyone here ever tried a Cort Josh Paul sig? Based on an Elrick design. I've never seen one in the UK. Anyone know where I could find one?
hi Bigwan I played one, maybe a couple of years ago now. It was a five string version in the shade of absinthe green. It was in a guitar shop in Bangor, North Wales (doubt it's still there!). I was quite surprised to see it, as I didn't think at the time that they were available over here either. I had serious GAS for an Elrick at the time (which subsided before I did anything drastic), so it was nice to try it out just to get a taste From memory here's what I thought about it: i) Fit and finish appeared to be good. ii) In true guitar shop fashion, it was very averagely set up, and fairly dead strings. iii) The pups (EMG Hz I think?) and electronics weren't great, and I'm sure the bass would benefit greatly from an upgrade. iv) At £750, it probably was over-priced, and I'm sure you would get better value for money at that price elsewhere. Especially given what you can pick up for £750 second hand. In fact importing it new from the US would have been cheaper. v) Tone wise, I thought it wasn't as "modern" as the looks might have suggested, or as I expected. vi) It was green. (I much prefer the natural ones). Not a glowing review perhaps, but it can't have been too bad cos I spent about 20mins playing it. If it had been a dog, it would have been back on the stand quicker than you could say "Cort Elrick Josh Paul 5 string". If I saw one cheap-ish I'd certainly consider it, even if it was just to try it out over a long period, cos I still really like the Elick look, but wouldn't want to splash out on the real thing. I did consider getting one from the US for a time, as you could pick them up new on ebay for around the $500 mark, but ultimately my GAS wasn't strong enough to see it through. Hope that helps a little bit cheers G
Hi, I've recently purchased a warwick dirty blonde, and it's a great bass, just not what I'm after. I've been playing a Yamaha TRB 5 for years now, and should probably have stuck with that, but was seduced by the rarity and kudos of the Warwick. Anyway I decided to get rid of the Warick and try to get hold of a Yamaha TRB5PII (the really nice one with the thru neck and piezos). However I can't find one for sale anywhere, except imports at silly money. I really like the punchy and versatile sound. Can anyone suggest any alternatives to the TRB 5PII ? I'm worried that if i go of fbass shopping again I'll be seduced by another bass that isn't right for me. I reckon I'd be prepared to spend around £1300 Thanks in advance.
hey Gilmour if your heart is set on the TRB5, get the original TRB5P - I've played both and the TRB5P is a much nicer bass than the TRB5PII (IMHO). It was just more playable somehow. I sold my TRB5P as I decided that the neck was a big big for my tastes, but sound wise it was awesome, and I'd recommend it to anyone. They crop up on ebay quite regularly, and you could possibly get one relatively cheap ~£600 if you're lucky. Or as Nik suggests, there's a whole world of other basses to try cheers G

Serviced (£80 incl new set of Elite strings) by Chris as the Bass Centre a couple of weeks ago, and the electronics are working perfectly. Schaller machine heads, Schaller bridge and Schaller Pickup. Active electronics with: Vol, Treble, Bass and what Chris said was a series/parallel switch for the pickup. It comes with a well solid wooden case that came with the bass when my mate bought it direct from Ashley Pangborn back in the 80's. Condition is pretty good for it's age, and it sounds pretty damn good to me. A P-bass on steroids is probably quite a good description. Just a quick bump to say this is still available, but cash on collection (or suitable mutually convenient meeting place) as I dont currently have time to sort out packaging and posting etc. Also, it would be my preference to sell to someone who can try before they buy. It's in at the Bass Center getting a fret dress/full set up at the moment, and I'll have it back at the end of the week. So I'll include that in the price of £1100 and a virtually new Pro-tec semi-hard case. I'm in no hurry to sell, so if it doesn't shift at that price, I'll probably keep it. And when I get it back on Friday, playing like a dream, I might decide to keep it anyway Anyway, there you have it. Still open to offers on interesting trades too. Especially: NS 5 string upright, Pedulla Pentabuzz or WHY? (5strings only though) cheers G
Oh, quick question for anyone: What's the lower limit on importing outside the EU? A set of strings costing £29 (that's with postage) from America, would they charge duty/customs/whatever? Cheers, Paul.
i think the duty limit is around about the £30 mark, but they're not always consistent about it (ie sometimes you'll get away with a higher value. i my experience though, you should be ok with 1 set of strings. I bought 3 sets of DR Hi-Beams once, and did pay import duty & vat on them, declared value was around 65usd. so, while I'm on the subject can anyone tell me the difference in sound between the HiBeams and the Sunbeams? I've liked the Hi-Beams but find them a bit too bright, and a little rough to the touch. I really liked the sound and feel of Elixir Nanowebs, but they are rather expensive - luckily I didn't pay for them as they were on a bass I bought. It sounds like they are a good long-life option though as long as you don't use a pick.
The Tokyos are active/passive as usual for Sadowskies right? I imagine the preamp and the pups themselves are the same build and the truer 70's jazz sound is mainly from the body diference and the pup placement...
The pickups on mine are Sadowsky single coils. The preamp is the standard Sadowsky preamp: Volume, Balance, Treble Cut/Boost, Bass Boost/pull for passive mode.
Just wondering: Are those black spots on the neck dirt that has gone into the wood? I thought those maple necks were finished with a clear lacquer, thus making dirt removal easy (I'm thinking of my jazz).
hi BaL yes, i think it's dirt in the wood, but the finish looks ok, so I'm not sure how that happened... maybe the fingerboard has been re-laquered in the past - i have no idea. This bass has previously been owned by a couple of other forum members, so if they know, they might chime in cheers G
