Old Blood Noise Endeavors - Dark Star Pad Reverb
PianoFights replied to PianoFights's topic in Effects
So spotted that this was 22% off at guitarbox.co.uk yesterday, which pushed me over the fence to get it. Good thing I did pull the trigger too, as it looks like it's back up to full price now. I've not really used reverb before, so I won't have much of a frame-of-reference to judge this pedal by, but I'll report back here with my thoughts anyway -
Old Blood Noise Endeavors - Dark Star Pad Reverb
I've never tried it on bass so can't really contribute anything useful but one of the guitarists in my band has one and it's a fantastic pedal. The three modes make it really usable in loads of different contexts but in the same way you know most of the sounds are that specific pedal. I have no idea how it will handle bass, it is quite dark voiced anyway so assume you'll be ok. Sorry I can't help more but wanted to share positive experience of it
Nah mans, appreciate the input I'm pretty sure I'l love it... IF... it can deal with the TonePump without freaking out. I might message OBNE directly and just straight-up ask them what they think. -
Interested to hear if anyone has had any experience using the OBNE Dark Star with bass. I was in the market for a new pedal, was thinking something in a reverb flavour, and actually purchased the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath. The Afterneath is a really cool effect, but I'm getting horrible issues with it clipping unless I play really delicately. Another issue with the Afterneath is that the mix knob drops my clean signal pretty considerably as you turn it clockwise to "give the appearance of full wet", but it makes the difference in my overall level between pedal ON/OFF just too huge. So I think I'm going to be sending the Afterneath back, and now I'm eyeing up the Dark Star. From the demos I've seen it looks like it can do dark and beautiful washes, but is capable of some pretty weird sounding stuff as well. Just up my street, but since my crappy experience with the Afterneath (which was an ostensibly great pedal), I'm a little nervous that I'm going to get stung again. I play a Spector Euro with a TonePump circuit, which is pretty hot. Am I just going to end up with clipping issues with any reverb pedal? The Dark Star does at least have an internal trimpot to tweak the output level, so I should be able to avoid the level issue I had with the EQD. I'd be grateful to hear about any experience anyone has had with one, or any advice on the matter at all really Thanks! Josh

Yeah, of course! I'd love to put something together. Really psyched that you enjoy the track. If you haven't seen it already, some friends of ours made a really excellent video for Glow Coin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-kDbUQ35z4 The tapping bass line through the first part of the track is a little ridiculous really. The whole phrase is 11 beats long, but I guess it makes more sense to think of it as a phrase of 5 and then 6. I'll be out of the studio and back home on Sunday. I'll see if I can put something together next week. Audio and video quality is likely to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of crap to poor... I'll see what I can do. -
Charlie Barnes has been on my radar a while, but have never really given him a go. I saw him join Amplifier as a guest musician at ArcTanGent festival... I really don't like Amplifier at all so I think I just tarred him with the same brush. Listening to the single now, I kind of wish I'd watched his set (though he probably clashed with someone else amazing, as is often the case at ArcTanGent!). The track sounds a little more "anthem-y" than "post-rock" at the end for me, but overall he (and the band) explore a lot of ideas and package it in a very neatly constructed song. Excellent work man. Are you doing anything with any other projects in Leeds? I'll be up that way with my band Waking Aida for StrangeForms Festival 2015.

Production is all thanks to Jamie Ward... and will be again for album No. 2. He's so incredibly thorough, and every bit as passionate about making a brilliant sounding album as we are. Another great example of his production work would be his own band's most recent album; Jamie plays bass in Maybeshewill, and produced their album Fair Youth which was released last year. If anyone's looking to record in the future, I'd recommend Jamie for sure. Without a doubt, he'll make your work sound the best it can be.
In - nowt (that could change) Out - nowt (that's about to change) Procrastinated over buying a Gibson Thunderbird at a very reasonable price...and lost it. My band parted with our old drummer (nice guy, couldn't keep time, very very loud leading to an arms race on stage to compensate) and found a new one (nice guy, keeps time, real good handle on the groove) who is worth his weight.
Technically, this thread is "Bassess In/Basses Out 2014...", so how could your In/Out possibly change?! -
Fender/Squier Bass VI instead of a regular bass.?

Now that you guys have pointed it out, I recall having been through this very same discussion and realisation before... The human brain is supposed to retain information, right? I think mine may be faulty... -
Just had a look, looks like a squier jaguar bass which has been modded to be 6 strings.
Thanks for the correction; that's cool to know! -

Well now, let me check the old transaction log... Hmm, nothing in 2014... Nothing in 2013 either... Let me see... Ah! Here we are... 2005, IN: Spector Euro 4 LX, one of. -
I would recommend having a go with an EHX Superego Synth Engine. Works like a Freeze pedal, so you can hold and sustain a note or chord and then play over the top. It adds a subtle synth-y sound to the sustained sound... Nothing too over the top.
