1. Nice to know I'm not the only one who thought this was easily missable. The only thing that caught my attention was one of the guitarists in the Maccabees playing through a Selmer amp and cab! Balcro
2. It's the clean resonant tone i get from the combination of strings and the Ash body. It sounds good even unamplified. It's light, about 8.5 lbs, balances quite well, I've got two pick-up blocks for resting the thumb, the versatile pre-amp with a mid-boost toggle and another 3 position switch for engaging any of the three single-coils. Terrific versatility. And then there's the neck. It's that Ibanez/Cort/G&L neck: it's fast, say no more. It was this or the Classic Vibe 60'sJazz. This won for me.
3. Try this link and listen to the video on the page. Try to copy the link in one line and paste into the address bar. If that doesn't work then go to Ibanez - bass - SR Series - Sr1200 Premium. http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eb_page12.php?area_id=3&data_id=85&color=CL01&year=2012&cat_id=2&series_id=17 I had and listen. That is one nice sound. Balcro.
4. Welcome to the forum Paul. I'm sure you'll receive lots of good advice from the jazzinistas and EUB brigade. Bilbo, calling Bilbo... Regards, Balcro.

6. Someone will tell me who it is I don't like. He's even worse than that first sentence. I know they've got to "have something about them", but not like that............ He fronts quite a biggish name band; they come from Leeds; wears shiny suits that are too tight as are the necks of his shirt collar; arrogant enough to demand applause and cheering before they've played a note; appeared on the McCartney gig at Anfield football ground a year or so ago. Balcro.
7. Can't find anything which matches all your criteria in the general price bracket. If the speakers are more efficient they only tend to be either 8 ohms or have slightly lower overall power handling. There are a few loudspeakers available which are louder, but they're not obviously designed for bass guitar and are often over £200 each! The KappaPro 15a only appears to be available in 8 ohm versions, but it is very efficient in the 100Hz - 1kHz area. Just going by frequency response graphs alone it seems to be 4dB louder for a given input. However I can't vouch for it's tone. Why not send an e-mail direct to Eminence for their suggestions. They've previously responded to me in under 48 hours. Good luck. Balcro
8. Hello Redlawman, Obviously there are a few 4 ohm models about as I've just found this: - http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/eminence-delta-15lf-4ohm-15-500watt-speaker-p-1199.html It should do the job. Apparently works best in an enclosure between 85 - 167 litres in volume. Don't expect a massive difference in volume by allowing the amp to double it's output. Maybe just a decibel or two at best. Balcro.
9. There are more questions before we can give you advice. 15" 4ohm drivers aren't too common on the Eminence site. What do you mean by high-end and full-range? Presumably you mean "not a neodymium magnet". Is the original driver in the cabinet and if so, what are the markings on it? What power handling is required? Preferably from internal dimensions, what is the size of the cab. Balcro.
10. Sticks head above parapet! I'd suggest some more "light 'n shade". Dip the master volume a touch during the verses and then let the volume rise during the choruses. The rhythm guitar with effects pedal is often too prominent and competes too strongly with the vocals and other instruments. The bass is nicely in the mix; sounds great when you give it some welly! So how's that from someone who is a complete amateur and doesn't know his fuzz from his overdrive. Balcro.
11. G' morning all, Just delivered by the postman 10 minutes ago. Cheers Fumps. 220 pages to go. Balcro.
12.
I was wondering if people had had any more recent experiences with these? Has technology moved on and improved the lot of the function band? I've been asked to do a wedding gig at a venue with a "noise limiter set at 86db at the outside wall". My first reaction is to say no but I wonder if I'm being too hasty. We're not a particularly loud band and have good volume control when required. I understand why the venue has one, it's a country village pub / Coaching Inn type of place with plenty of houses around it. My worries are: Disrupting the flow of the gig / party / atmosphere Potential damage to equipment from sudden power cuts Any experiences / recommendations?
That condition on the licence "86dB at the outside wall" is another way of saying "86dB at the boundary wall to the next premises". In practical terms that will mean you can exceed 90dB inside the hall with ALL the doors & windows closed!! The problems occur when the sweating horde fling open the windows or french doors and the sound bursts out. If the sound limiter is linked to a switch on the doors, then you have very short interval before the limiter cuts in. It can still be a precarious situation. If the pub's got good ventilation or air-con then you're less likely to be troubled. All limiters are not created equal. The cut-off type are oudated but cheap to buy. The better noise squasher/compressor type are much better and allow the band to continue playing at a set level without cutting off. The downside is that they cost hundreds of £ more to buy. As borisbrain says, limiters will often be tripped at mid-to-high frequencies because the units are either old, or cheaper versions. Any good modern limiter will have selectable weightings ( "A", "B", "C" or "Linear") built inside the box. If only "A" is available then that will result in audience noise and clapping setting the thing off! Balcro.

Now I think there is only one. I presume form the above that I will receive the copy from "fumps". Unless something odd happens, I will pass the book on to "munkonthehill". Balcro.

15.
Hi, I'm new to the forum and to bass playing. I'm enjoying playing and writing my own stuff after a 30 year break and am venturing into recording my own material. I needed to add bass lines to my stuff so have stretched my already stretched budget a little further and bought what I believe to be a Peavey zephyr, 4 string, bolt on neck and passive PUP's. To my "new" ears it sounds pretty good. The pickups seem to give a good sound range and it feels good to play. I don't have an amp but it should be fine for recording. It was previously owned by another lead player so has sat in the corner for years unplayed. I was thinking I should treat it to a new set of strings. Like I said I'm on a tight budget so was looking on ebay and got confused as I know nowt! Can anyone one advise me on a decent set of all rounders for a new player?
Just looked up your bass in a search and the indications are that it's a 35" long scale bass, with 2 adjusters either side of the headstock. You may need a set of extra-long strings. So it'll be worthwhile contacting stringbusters.co.uk or stringsdirect.co.uk to check what might be suitable. Balcro.

I was sent this link in an e-mail about 3 weeks ago. someone must have shown him a piano when he was about 5! May I recommend a quick trip to youtube. The best stuff in my opinion are the compilations in Black & White from an English ITV show called Don't Knock the Rock! Sounds Incorporated are the backing group. Magic. Balcro

21. I tried yell.com for bed & breakfast. The answers are for the better end of B&B, but I came up with this. http://www.bedbreakfast-stevenage.co.uk/ Good luck, Balcro.
22.
Since living here, I've had no shortage of offers to play in bands, do loads of deps etc and always seem to be playing but on the last night of the festival, I went to see Jennifer Batten. She was supporting the Michael Jones group. He's the ex guitarist for Jean Jacques Goldman and to be honest, I'd never heard of them. Anyway, I was watching the bassisit for the whole set. He made it all look so easy. Didn't play anything flash or outlandish, classy and subtle basslines and totally nailed it. Minimum movement on the fretboard and was so tight with the drummer you couldn't get a Rizla between them. Made me realise that I'd really got complacent. For the last 8 years, I've assumed I was an average to good bassplayer but watching this other player made me realise that I've not moved forward as a musician and just sat on my arse and now, have a serious amount of work ahead of me if I'm going to be satisfied with my playing.
I'm with TheRevs last paragraph on this - "It's good to be humbled occasionally and it's good to be able to recognise and work on the weaker points of your playing but don't beat yourself up about it. I bet if he guy you watched came to one of your gigs, he'd be impressed by your playing. It's all relative." I've remember watching a young bass player in a nationwide touring pop/rock show and he did exactly the same. Immaculate straight fingers technique (how I wish I had fingers that long) but surprisingly little movement on the fretboard. Everything sounded spot on with the drummer(s). Then I fell in. The lines sounded really good. As you say, nothing flashy, but he'd probably economised on perfect originality. It's a brave musician who produces 30+ bass lines in one evening. Balcro
23. Nope, haven't had a play, but that is because these models weren't originally destined for the UK market. I think they're from the US. Have a look at - http://www.ibanez.com/BassGuitars/home Tweaked Ibanez house pickups instead of the Bartolini MK.!'s and different neck materials but probably close to the classic SR500. Just look at that price! Balcro.
24. Hello Guys, Is there any action on this thread. Who hasn't finished their holiday reading................? Balcro.
25. I can't see how generate beginning & end youtube tags so it will have to be a link. Something like these - & Balcro. Edit. Oooh, what happened, they're there anyway.
