Yes, I think Moos3h is right. I've had a bit of a dabble at this with winISD and I reckon an Eminence Kappalite 3015 (not the LF variant) will fit the bill. It's nominal overall power handling is 450 watts and it's very efficient; like LOUD. It models quite well and even showed a rising bass output below 100Hz. Smoothing that bass out is relatively simple, but see if any other respondents agree with my assessment. Didn't check the cost. Balcro.

Cab lining stuff, matress topper, the cheap way
Balcro replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Repairs and Technical
This is a ported cab, so it is about lining rather than stuffing. Although according to the maths, it is tuned so low it might as well be a sealed cab. I want basic fingery foam, I've got loads of little bits from packaging, need a big bit.
Good morning Mr Foxen, It will require a bit of maths to get value for money, but try the following 2 links to get what you want. www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk www.soundservice.co.uk Different shapes, thicknesses and sizes.
Great to hear a kindred spirit out there in the wilderness , again I have nothing but respect for the audio engineers who probably know squillions more about cabs + speaker design . But please give us mavericks in our woodsheds a chance . I am constantly tinkering with my cabs , stripping them down , adding bits + bobs and seeing how it effects the sound . I will never go into production , but just enjoy ''punking '' around in the woodshed . After all, you Americans did put a man on the moon using slide-rules and one of the best Harley Davidson flat track racing bikes was designed by a dentist !! I may never change lead into gold , but who knows what may happen along the way .
Maybe you do tinker with the wood, but using some good software will help no end, because it doesn't just give you the modern optimum, whatever that is/may be! The software is basically clever enough for you to even deliberately design your speakers so that they're technically Wrong and take your choice of a thousand points in-between optimum & wrong. It doesn't just show the size of the box but it can also show you how easily you might blow it up! That bit does come as a surprise. It's all good fun. Try a little science and you will save yourself a lot of wood and splinters. Enjoy. Balcro. PS. By the way it will also tell you how loud it will go. Yee Ha. After a lot of surfing I put the best figures I could find on the D140 into winISD. Put two units in that old Sun cabinet and came up with 127dBa in the " mids" (460Hz) upwards. All from 120watts input. Welcome to the deaf club.

Kenny Passarelli first to use fretless bass?
Balcro replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
The article states that he was AMONG THE FIRST, not the first. I cannot see a problem with the statement, although I have not heard of the man nor have I heard the Joe Walsh LP mentioned. The record could be the earliest with a strong fretless presence, in which case the whole thing seems fully valid. Of course, if the record is not the earliest [etc]
My first and only hearing of him was as bass player to Elton John on the "Rock of the Westies" album, circa 1975. Credited with playing for Jo Walsh, Stephen Stills and "Gonner Ears"! Balcro. -
Hi Bilbo, Further to your Post #79 - My remark about the students was not to argue that Yes were indulgent. I was trying to set some historical context to how I saw them and their audience at the time when the college music scene was booming. At that time, the put-down use of indulgence hadn't been thought up. They were just very new and progressive. Once the media found the need to criticise them and others as indulgent, they, the media, were probably pursuing their own agenda. See the first para to SteveK's post#84. The put-down has stuck.
OK, I've got the a*** I keep hearing the term 'self indulgence' used whenever there is any suggestion that a musician is moving away from the groove and into the area of soloing or collective improvisation. I have heard this term since the heady days of punk when the bands I liked (Yes, Genesis etc) were dismissed by the monkey-booted, donkey-jacket wearing Philistines that surrounded me as irrelevant because of their 'self indulgence'.
Who first used the term indulgence to describe the likes of Yes? I don't know, but it was probably some journalist in the NME or Melody Maker. It's there for provocation to make the story/article run in the days when popular music lasted no more than 5 minutes. Then came progressive rock! Students liked it even if they didn't understand it musically, 'cos all their mates liked it. Non-students didn't get it so they mocked the "self-indulgers". Improvisation and technique are fine in the right place, but I do think some musicians push it to the limit, because for them it becomes part of their CV and they rise or fall by the regular demonstration of their virtuosity. Take that multi-themed Keith Jarrett video. That's the first piece of Keith Jarrett that I've found enjoyable (although I could have done without the face-pulling). Technically that wasn't a difficult piece but the usual ensemble pieces are on a different planet. You don't go to a Keith Jarrett concert to listen to old standards like "The Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" drifting into a film theme followed by "DannyBoy" etc...and on.... Must agree with you there Beedster - "One man's self-indulgence is another man's virtuosity. It's about taste, and people have different tastes; no amount of ranting about it eloquently or otherwise will change those tastes substantially." The original critics probably had a point. When having to listen to endless repetitions and improvisation for the sake of improvisation, then I think it's fair comment, but just improvising and expanding within the context of the piece and moving towards a conclusion shows both control and the ability to entertain. As Mykesbass said "and jazzers taking improvisation further off piste) where it becomes competitive, and having become competitive they are then doing it for their own personal achievement, not for the benefit of the listening public, thereby becoming self indulgent?" Balcro.

Source: - Go to stringsdirect.co.uk - and send an e-mail via "Contact us". Brite Flats are not listed on the web-site shop, so ask in the e-mail for the one's you want. I did that about 9 months ago. Strings were delivered in about 4 days. Balcro.

Anyone got the WinISD driver file for the Kappalite 3015?
Balcro replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Amps and Cabs
Got a new PC and it isn't saved on it. An Greenboy's site that had it seems to be gone.
Here - It's probably best to go to the horses mouth and enter from new. Some of the buil-in files give "remarkable" results.
I bought a Kappalite 3015, and with the WinISD Alpha version I got the ports to 5 1/4". My info wasn't 100% complete as far as the physical specs of the driver, so I approximated on the remaining cab volume with the inwardly protruding basket, bracing, and ports. Couldn't do every single calculation... but it sounds pretty dern good! Played out twice over the weekend, and I'm getting to know it. It's got a nice low-end punch, moves a good deal of air, and feels like it'll handle what I've got for amplification without a problem. It's new to me, and I'm still learning about what it does. I may need to add a third port if I get a stronger amp, to avoid "chuffing". But so far, so good. I sold my heavy Trace Elliot cabs, and boy is this thing light! I'd like to clone it, get another 3015, then I'll be in Piggy Heaven. Meanwhile I've got a GK 800RB and am getting an old Celestion 12 re-coned. I'll build an open-back cab for it, and will use it for a top-end to bi-amp the 800RB into... I guess I'll cross it over at around 1KHz or so. Here's the cab with the longer, pvc ports: Fun with noise!
Good luck and enjoy! Balcro.
Hi all, I am new to the forum and this is my first post so sorry if it is a bit long winded. I have recently inherited an Acoustic Model 220 amp head and matching 402 2x15" speaker cab that I know little about. So far all the info I have I found here: http://acoustic.homeunix.net/twiki/bin/vie...cousticProducts The amp will be going up for sale soon, but I would like to know anything more about the amp and cab that the above link doesn't cover that someone else might know. Unfortunately, I am not a bassist and the amp is too big for my situation at home - otherwise I'd keep it. Also, as I have no idea what it's all worth any insight into a good asking price would be most appreciated. Many Thanks
Use the above link and then click on the further link to the "Forum". Go from there. Those guys know pretty much all there is to know. As for the UK, "Bumnote" and friends will be along shortly. Balcro.

Yes. Same here. A post at 6pm seemed OK, but when I checked back just now, it had disappeared. Using Talktalk ISP and Opera browser. Balcro.

Oooh that's weird. My post at 6pm disaapeared into the ether. The rest is a repeat..... Sorry it wasn't very helphful, but it reminded me that I must get that set of Brite Flats out of the box. That video and the others in the GHS bass string series prompted me to try a set. No messing about. Thats the tone on offer. WYSIWYG. There not widely available here, but a quick e-mail to stringbusters.com and they were mine in 5 days, although not displayed on the web-site. Balcro.

Thanks for that. Really something to look forward to. Saw them at the Bath Festival back in whenever, maybe '68. They were just spot on. So here by way of an indulgence is one my favourite youtube clips. Somedays everything just works and this was one of them............ Using WinISD v 0.50a7, I get similar basic figures to yourself. However, I suggest you go back to Etone and try to get hold of more speaker (T/S) parameters such as "Xmax", "BL" , "Sd" and confirm that the resistance as 8 Ohms. When you've got those figures, enter them into the database following the guidance on "data entry" in the help file. Re-run WinISD. Also click on the "Signal" tab and put in a realistic wattage signal to test at figures higher than 1 Watt. Good luck. Balcro.

Markstuk, Doddy and Bilbo are all correct in their descriptions. Think of it as a music writing protocol related to the key in which the music is written. Yes C# and Db are the same physical note (and so are all the other combinations of adjacent notes), but if the key changes then so does the note description on the stave. Balcro.
I just downloaded WinISD. Maybe I can make heads or tails of it.
Have fun with that. I find both brilliant and maddening! Check out the "Help" menu on how to enter data and in what order. The minimal entry of data seems to work best. Try the Eminence 15" Kappa LFA. Balcro.
The cab, on the outside, is about 24" x 18" x 19". It's full of insulation, and due to life here being less than friendly to industrial-oriented projects in the home, I haven't pulled the insulation from the cab to measure it inside... but it's 3/4" ply. It's got 4 1/2" x 2" ports in it, but I can adjust those once I find some pipe that's of that size. I'm also thinking the 3015 will do, but I have to look again (I'd rather go cheaper!). Thanks for looking at the specs for the recommended volume! Tell you what, I'm pretty distracted for a guy trying to focus on this kind of thing. I tend to be very slow about all this...! Thanks for the reply.
Did a quick check based on your measurements. Cab seems to be 105 litres. Will come back to you later today. Balcro.
Any of you guys ever seen one of these? I'm wondering what the best inexpensive speaker might be for it. I'm thinking along the lines of an Eminence Deltalite-II 2515, that kind of thing. Ideas? Thanks!
As it stands, from my onscreen diagnosis, that looks like an 85litre cabinet (approx 5300 cu.inches) (net of driver, ports and handle recesses). Just so happens that........ http://www.eminence.com/pdf/DeltaliteII_2512.pdf ....and what's the largest recommended size for a vented cabinet????? You'll need to check the dimensions, the pattern and diameter of the baffle securing holes for yourself, but that looks workable. Balcro.
I haven't got a copy and no-one ha been in touch for my address.
Then you should be the next recipient. Judging by the recent posts, "Jaqueslemac" could still have a copy. Lets hope he's not in Normandy. All yours. Balcro.

G' morning everyone. I've checked the posts and some of my own PM's. It looks like YouMa and BassBunny are the current holders of the two of the copies. As I'm on the list after BassBunny and there seem to 3 copies circulating, can someone make me an offer. Thanks. Balcro

Hi JD1, I'm similarly numpty in this area, from the point of view of never having tried it , yet. Anyway, look at this link and it gives you a clue - http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UCG102.aspx So its bass guitar -> IN to the device - [levels reset to USB standard] and -> OUT via USB cable to the PC. By desk, I presume you mean a mixer desk? Okay. So in your case bass "IN" (DI) to mixer. Plug a USB lead between the "USB OUT" and a spare USB socket on your computer. Download "Audacity" and use that to record the signal coming into the USB port. There are other options available, but that would depend on your computer soundcard. Balcro.
Thanks for that link, it's very helpful. Is it me or the La Bella have the biggest sound? I've been playing for the past two days a set of TIs and I'm very impressed with the strings, I prefer them over Chrome's, both sound and tension, if tension perhaps a bit too low.I Some of you have mentioned La Bella's tension sit in between the Chrome's and the TI's so I'm trying them next. I just want to make sure I'm going for the right set, please advice me: - The 760FS have much higher Tension than TI's? - And the Extra Light set of La Bella's, the 760FX?
I have no direct experience of any of the current 3 brand choices, but to my ears and the computer speakers, I would say the La Bellas have a touch more middle while the Chromes have a very shallow scoop to their sound. The TI's seem just a little polite in the dynamics but with a tonal balance similar to the La Bellas. I compared the latter two again & again: - noticed that the La Bella's stopped and started between notes while there was some "smear over" between notes with the TI's - could have been the player adapting to the different tensions? Balcro.
