Hey Wylie, our OP friend is fixed up now but I didn't want to miss the opportunity to endorse your views on the excellent middle-of-the-range Club. Got mine as part of a trade and I absolutely love it. Nice and light too. Here it is with my other 2 shorties. If you want a distinctive-looking, top-quality short-scale, then check out the Gibson Les Paul Junior DC for sale on this forum at £450. They are superb, I've got one (paid well over £800 new for mine) and I can highly recommend them. They were a one-off special in Gibson's funky Pelham Blue 'custom' finish.

GIBSON LES PAUL DC JR. With Hard Case- Now SOLD
Genuinely very surprised this is still here - a giveaway price
Agreed - a fabulous bass at a great price! I prefer it to my SG Reissue (now gone) thanks to its slightly better strap balance. In every other way it's at least as good as the SG. The look is obviously subjective but personally I love it. Paid over £800 for mine, no regrets (except not getting Will's for £450!!). -
I've been tempted - that would be the ultimate treat for me too.

Sorry Pete, didn't answer your questions. Not sure where the Contemporary Club is made except that I know it's not Germany (I think the top-of-the-range model from The Fatherland costs around £1200) and I presume it's not China either, as that's where the cheapie Ignition version comes from. To my ears the bottom E sounds more than tight enough with the OE rounds still fitted, although that distinctive short-scale thud is still there.

Pete, got Jessica hippo in the shot as she was included in the deal - honest! My wife loves 'em and had already seen and named this one at GC Music & Collectables in Taunton)! Did the Hofner + hippo trade for my Ebony SG re-issue with Glen. As the man said while we were shaking hands on it, "I've never done a deal with a hippo before" (hope it wasn't me he was talking about). Rich - couldn't agree more mate, just my personal preference plus the sad fact that the SG wasn't selling on the forum.

Hi Pete, ended up with a Hofner Club CTE in cherry red - it looks gorgeous, plays great and, if the shop-window that Macca looked in had been displaying one of these instead of the violin shape, would now be a legend! Seem to remember BW with a similar looking Framus at one time. Visited Stephen and tried one a while back. Nice guy, very good bass but I decided to go for something more compact (more in the Wyman style??) in the end.

Mmmmm - I like my TE is the best too but like the idea of a brand-new Eden for £269 with the warranty and reliability. Worst case would be buying something used and then having to spend money fixing it. That's what happened with the TE I have - mind you, it's been perfect ever since!!
-
Thanks Dan and Paul. Just tried the Eden E300 that my local shop is doing at £269 new. They lent me their demo for our practice last week and I was quite impressed - certainly good value for money, though fewer bells and whistles. I'm tempted...
I've recently gone back to a Trace head - RAH-300-12 SMX - after some years of using Class Ds. Tone is very subjective - some people hate them, some love them! But, like you, I find that pushing in the pre-shape does everything I want a bass amp to do. The amp I have kept as back up (right up until I can get another Trace head that is similar) is a TC Electronic RH750. To my ears it sounds the closest to the Trace sound of the amps I have tried (GenzBenz Streamliner, Markbass Tube 800) and also it is nearly as loud. Doesn't make me smile in the same way, though. I'd be interested to try an Orange Terror Bass as a direct comparison but haven't got one yet.
Paul, just had a look at the TC Electronic stuff - very interesting, especially the features: 3-button memory, on-board tuner etc. Trouble is that 750 Watts is too much for my cabs (2 x 10 at 250W and 1 x 15 at 300W, both 8ohm). The RH450 might be better for me - any idea whether it sounds generically the same as its bigger brother?

Can anybody advise what head (pref used) would be a good backup for my TE AH300-SMC? I love the Trace (really sweet with the pre-set on and a touch of compression) and have used nothing else after buying it second-hand 6 years ago. I had it repaired/serviced/checked by EMS as it developed a noisy volume pot but it's been totally reliable since then. It's just that I'm starting to feel the need for an insurance policy! I play a selection of short-scale basses in a covers/functions band and run the Trace through a TE compact 15" cab and a same-size Ashdown 2 x 10". Btw I've ruled out an Ashdown MAG300 after reading bad reviews regarding build quality.

Possible that we can all agree that...

Hey David - never touched a Wal, have zero interest in them, so can't be bothered to read all the posts you've generated. Just want to say that I LUUUURVE your OP - since I was a kid, I've always enjoyed seeing a big, fat bubble getting burst!! -
How nice is that?!
