    Personally I've found that medium-guage La Bella flats work best for me on my 30"-scale basses even though the band drop-tunes to Eb.

    BASH NEWS - OFFICIAL T-SHIRT!! OK guys, we've bitten the bullet and commissioned another Bass Bash T-shirt - incorporating the Basschat logo (thanks Ped!). This time it's a more colourful design (that's not specific to this year's event) on a combat-green, 100%-cotton, good quality shirt. To keep the price down to £15, we've had to order 70 shirts. This means that me and Mrs. Scrumpy will have to fork out a big chunk of money for these in the next couple of weeks so could those who definitely want one please PLEASE get behind this by PM-ing me your order and paying in advance. There will be enough shirts for anyone who's not sure to purchase on the day. We've ordered in M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL so just order what you normally wear and we'll measure/confirm the actual sizes when received. Thanks in advance!

    I'm gigging a couple of BF SC3 (single 12" driver) cabs with a HandBox R-400 and Mesa TT-800, both of which sound sublime. GLWTS

    Picked one of these up off here last week, gigged it for the first time on Saturday (classic-rock covers band) and was deeply impressed. The controls are minimal but have been extremely well thought-out to deliver a wide range of great sounds that are very easily accessible. IMHO one of the best-kept secrets in the world of bass amps and I may well make this my main gig amp going forward. Given that it would be replacing my state-of-the-art Mesa TT-800 that cost more than double the money new, that's really saying something. GLWTS

    Just as others have said, top Basschat member so deal with confidence. The amp I bought from Warren was in top condition and packed to perfection.

    If your band has a right-handed bass player and a left-handed guitarist (as mine does) it's also the most compact line-up with the necks of both instruments across the front of the drums rather than butting up against the walls of the pub.

    You're probably right - it's the effect of that wonderful though relatively large 4-in-line Fender headstock.

    That should work perfectly for me to boost some of the thinner voices I use for some numbers without fiddling around with volume controls on the amp or bass. This amp really has been well thought-out. Btw, before the gig I replaced the rubber feet with some larger diameter ones I had and moved the originals to the side opposite the handle. Much better IMHO... and Mrs Scrumpy is making a nice cover for it too ☺️

    Great gig at a new pub venue last night! The R-400 blew me and the band away (apart from our drummer, who can only relate to standard P-bass sounds) and some of the muso punters came and told me how great the bass sounded. For me this amp is a real 'find' and in all honesty I wasn't expecting it to be vying with my wonderful Mesa TT-800 (just short of 1200 quid's-worth) as my main gig amp. Only remains to be seen how its 400W cope with bigger spaces. I just have to get my head round the relationship between the gain 'Crunch' and the Drive button. Obviously time to read through this topic and see if there's a user manual out there.

    So, I've just acquired a used R-400 off here. Based on first impressions at home and subject to tomorrow night's gig, I have the feeling that I'll be giving wateroftyne a big virtual pat on the back for spreading the word about HandBox on here. My main amp is a Mesa Subway TT-800 and I'm pleasantly surprised by how close the relatively simple R-400 gets me to the satisfying sounds I've dialled in to the highly-sophisticated TT-800. Leaving control of the mids to the 'Contour' pot works unexpectedly well and having the 'Crunch' at the top end of the gain control plus the 'Drive' and 'Bright' buttons comes close to achieving the different voicings that the TT-800 relies on 2 channels to deliver. The only thing I can find to criticise is the absence of 4 rubber feet on the side of the box opposite the carry handle, but that's an easy fix. The added nice touch for me is that, being half Polish, supporting Leszek's stuff - albeit indirectly so far - gives me extra satisfaction 🙂

    I've found fitting Ultralites is a game changer as the weight at the headstock end exerts the biggest leverage effect on the pivot point, i.e. where the strap sits on your shoulder. At around £100 for a set of 4, even if you fit them yourself it's not a cheap fix though.

    Correct! If the design of your bass is prone to neck-dive, then lightening the body makes that worse.

    In addition to the dreaded neck-dive, you get this extended reach issue with any s-s bass that has the top strap button closer to the body than F12. Having the bridge/string anchor a fair distance from the bottom strap button pushes the nut even further away - so your lovely bass qualifies on both counts 😊

    One of these was my very first bass bought new circa 1965 for £33!! It's a steal at the asking price and if it was blue like mine I wouldn't be able to resist it. GLWTS.

    This is the fretless from my small Gillett Contour collection. Probably about as rare as the ACG prototype though.

    The s-s 'Ray is a great bass and massive value for money. I bought one and a s-s Sandberg Cali knowing I would only keep one. Almost had to toss a coin to decide in favour of the Sandy.
