  1. As I hit the 'submit' button I knew it would just be a matter of time. Thanks guys, you have not let me down 🙂
  2. And another thing 🙂 Since last year's Bash, the hall floor has been sanded and re-finished at substantial expense. Apart from asking for especially respectful use this time, I'd like anyone who has suitable (i.e. flat rubber) cable ducting to please bring it along to supplement what I already have. People tripping over cables is top of my risk-assessment list but gaffer tape will definitely be a no-no from now on. I'll be bringing a few rolls of wide masking tape or other low-tack tape if I can find something suitable. Any suggestions anybody? Ta very much!
  3. Definitely, and thanks for taking the recycling mission on.
  4. Hi Phil, Many thanks. See you soon. Mike
  5. Hi Phil, PM sent. Mike
  6. No problem, you can just pay on the door. Really hope you can make it.
  7. PPS - forgot to mention* that: we need you to bring your own mains cable reels/extensions to make sure everyone has power; we rely on having a few volunteers from 8am to help spread the load of setting the hall up; there will be a limited selection of food available early doors for those who didn't have time for breakfast. *You'd think we'd never done this before!? 😉
  8. Well, not long to go now so it's time for my usual shout-out to anyone willing to pay in advance. For those who don't know, we do this to make sure that our costs are covered before we have to pay the balance of the hiring fee for the hall and Mrs. Scrumpy starts spending money on ingredients for the stuff she makes and freezes in advance - e.g. fruit crumbles 🙂 We're keeping the price the same as last year at £13 - an absolute steal for hot drinks all day plus an amazing sit-down buffet lunch. So could those of you who willing and able to pay now please ping me a PM, to which I will reply giving either my PayPal account address (a PP'friends and family' payment is much preferred) or bank details if you don't do PP. See you all soon!! Mike and Team Scrumpy. PS - don't forget to look out whatever you have for the raffle!
  9. Just hedging my bets in case I've not sold this before the Bash 🙂 Unique Gillett Contour ST FS
  10. Yep, just viewed the Bass Gear interview video on You Tube via the link - once again featuring my actual bass. It reminded me that the RRP for the Contour ST in the USA was $4950!!! Also remembered an interesting encounter with the guys from the Hofner stand when we launched the Contour six-string guitar at the 2018 Bristol Guitar Show. About half an hour before opening time on the first day, they came strolling down the aisle past our Gillett Guitar stand as I was doing a last-minute vac over the carpet. They did a double-take and rushed over for a closer look. It was quite obvious as they handled the demo basses and fired questions at us that they were deeply impressed. After I'd swapped business cards with their Sales Manager, his parting shot was: "I don't know how you can offer premium basses like these for such a low price." By the bye, as one who grew up worshipping The Beatles and Macca, I couldn't resist asking him whether he could do me a good price for a new top-of-the-range violin bass. He said if I called him after the show, he'd be able to sort something out for around £800. I've never forgiven myself for not following the offer up.
  11. Knew I had this somewhere. Hope the link to the video of Michael Gillett still works. Bass Gear 2019 Summer NAMM Awards.docx
  12. Dohhh! Only just had a proper look at the link and realised that's my bass that Michael Gillett is holding on the cover shot of Bass Gear magazine. Unfortunately (or maybe luckily) my Norton software won't let me download the pdf file for issue 22.
  13. Gillett Contour basses are rare and very special, but this one is unique! It's the actual bass that the guys from the American magazine Bass Gear played on the Gillett Guitars stand at the Summer of 2019 NAMM show before declaring the Contour 'Best Bass In Show'. The ST had been launched just before the show and instantly became the most popular bass in the range combining as it does the 'pickup-plus-piezo' configuration in the slimmed-down 'S' body. The first batch had immediately been shipped to impatient customers - me included! As I was helping Michael Gillett out with his sales, marketing and PR, he asked me if I would lend mine back to him so he could have one at the show. Bass Gear played several Contours but it was the sounds of mine strung with the optional Newtone phosphor-bronze round-wound strings (still fitted btw) that really blew them away - see below. So what exactly is it? In summary, it's an active medium-scale (31.75") electro-acoustic with through-body stringing, a J-style pickup at the neck and a piezo transducer under the bridge. But it's the innovative design and construction combined with the finest components, materials and build quality that makes the Contour so rewarding to own, play and listen to. Playing as I do rock and pop covers on solid-bodied basses, I've hardly played my Contour - which is why I've decided to let it go. I'd really prefer the buyer to collect as the bass comes in a gig bag*. Happy to drive an hour or so from J25 of the M5 for a meet-up. * The OE Gillett hard case was made to accommodate the deeper-bodied Standard version and packed out with a thick foam insert for the ST. This made it needlessly big and unwieldy so I took a £200 discount instead of the case. https://www.bassgearmag.com/issue-22/
  14. Hi Dan, when I started playing back in the '60s my first bass was a s-s Watkins Rapier that I bought without even knowing that different scale lengths were available. When I found out, I made the conscious decision to play Gibson basses and have been playing s-s basses ever since. Compared to those early days I'm thankfully spoiled for choice now with so many top-drawer s-s basses and string options out there. Welcome to the best topic on the Basschat forum - for me anyway 🙂

  16. Don't worry guys, Mrs. Scrumpy has got the cake requirement covered - and then there's the crumble 🙂
  17. Busy day yesterday so just sitting down to report on Friday night's gig for my covers band In Like Flynn. It's a new start-up by 4 experienced musicians and our gig count hasn't reached double figures yet. We were playing in the beer garden of the White Hart in Castle Cary for the second time in our short career. Nice venue recently taken over by proper people who you really hope will make a go of it. By the advertised start time of 7.30pm, the garden was full with a crowd spanning 3 generations (come to think of it, I span 3 generations on my own 🙂). Despite a few mistakes - annoying to us but probably not noticed by the punters - it was one of those gigs where we felt we'd reached that kind of comfortable plateau where the enjoyment of playing finally overcomes the anxiety of not being totally familiar with what you're doing. It was the first outing of my active Sandy s-s TM with its Aguilar upgrade through my Ampeg SVT 7 PRO + LFSys Monaco + Barefaced SC3. Absolutely amazing sounds with more than enough tonal flexibility to cover the wide range of stuff we do!! So that put a smile on my face from the sound-check to the final encore. The icing on the cake was that we got a booking for a private function. Life's good!! If you get a minute, visit https://www.inlikeflynnband.com/home and have a look at our show reel.
  18. Hi kiat, more than happy to give advice but not really any need for me to travel to Bass Bashes out of area because a) one a year is enough and b) people tell me that I have the best in the country on my doorstep. (Sorry if that sounds immodest, it's not meant to 🙂). My best suggestion would be for you to come along to ours. That will tell you all you need to know. Otherwise, just jump on at the bottom of the learning curve in the way you've already suggested. I'd say you need between 10 and 20 attendees bringing lots of gear to qualify as an 'event' rather than just a few mates getting together for a chat. However, you may need to start small before you can get bigger. From memory though, our first Bash in 2017 was very well attended and that's been the case ever since except for the pandemic year. We've found that presentations like our amp and cab shoot-outs and diy cab-build workshops have generated a lot of interest but you need people who have the knowledge and know how to present it. The other big seller for ours is all-day catering laid on by Mrs. Scrumpy and the Scrumpettes. That part of it is damned hard work by an excellent cook for a couple of days though.
  19. Got my Cali ll TM SL Short ex-stock from Thomann. The only thing it didn't have compared with my configurator design was a roasted maple neck. I was happy to trade that off against immediate delivery plus a cost saving of over £400, which has funded the Aguilar pick-up set I've just had fitted. Now the Sandy is definitely 'the one bass that rules them all' - in our house at least 🙂 The pic is the shot of my actual bass taken by Thomann.
  20. The Bash starts at 10am but anyone who wants to come earlier from 8am is welcome to have breakfast served from Mrs Scrumpy's kitchen and maybe help us set up.
  21. Gigged my Aguilar-equipped s-s Sandi Cali ll TM bass on Saturday. Relieved to report a big improvement on the OE pickups. Much enhanced presence in the mix thanks to extra heft compared to OE pups. So I'm well pleased with the mod but getting hold of the Aguilar AG 4M/J-HC set was a saga of marathon proportions. My starting point was the decision to get the Aguilars based on how good the J-J set is on my Vox Starstream. My online search proved fruitless as none of the UK or EU retailers were showing any stock. Next step was to call round to Taunton Audio Visual Services for a chat with Kevin, who would be doing the pup change-over. He found the set listed in his Barnes & Mullins catalogue at £285 and gave them a ring to place an order. All B&M could offer was that they had none in stock and delivery would be 'several months'. Plan B was to find a set in the USA, preferably before any UK government response to Trump's trade war doubled the price. Sweetwater were listing the set at USD259.99 but temporarily out of stock. With the weak Dollar that price converted to around £210 although I knew there'd be import taxes and charges to add on. Sweetwater assured me that Aguilar could ship to them 'within a week' so I placed my order after checking with my friend in California that she was happy to take delivery of my order and forward ship it to me. What could possibly go wrong? The first problem was the shipping quote she got from her local Post Office for a USPS delivery was a staggering USD150 for a fully insured 2 to 3-week delivery service. WTF?! So plan B was on pause. Thankfully I remembered someone on here (forgotten who) mentioned that lots of Talkbass members were recommending a service called Pirate Ship. Next stop the Pirate Ship website, where I discovered that they are effectively a shipping broker offering USPS deliveries at massively discounted rates. I won't extend my already lengthy post by going into too much detail. The bottom line is that I got the Aguilars in 3 weeks fully insured for a staggeringly low price of USD29.99. I did have to collect them from the Post Office sorting office in town and pay the £53 import charges though. The final all-in cost of the pups came to £280. Inly a fiver less than the UK RRP but I'm betting that, when/if they finally re-appear in the UK and Europe the price will have increased. Most important of all, I've got mine NOW 🙂 and this is how they sounded on a mobile phone recording at Saturday night's gig. Sandberg s-s Cali ll TM with AguilarAG 4M/J-HC set
