After reading the early posts on this topic I've just hopped back on at the end - so apologies if this has already been mentioned. I recently bought a new Genzler Magellan from Andertons for £749. This is a latest-generation, fully-featured D-class amp that oozes quality and sounds great. I take my hat off to them for bringing it to the UK market at such a reasonable price. Compare and contrast with the GK Fusion 800 (equivalent but around £220 dearer) and Mesa D800 (fewer features, a bit of a one-trick pony and around £120 dearer). I've owned both and they are great amps but not IMO good value for money and too expensive for me to buy new.

Vanderkley are better than Barefaced cabs, right?!
scrumpymike replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
All very interesting this! I bought into BF with a couple of used cabs - an SC Gen3 and Midget T. The latter went in favour of another SC G3 (didn't really need/like the tweeter). Now I've added a used Two10 and plan to keep all 3 cabs until I decide whether the retro 10" drivers suit me and my amps/basses better than the 12-inchers. If both styles work equally well in different contexts, I'll keep/use all 3 cabs (not mixing the different driver sizes as recommended by Alex). If the 10s turn out to be better for everything, I'll sell the SC G3s and buy another Two10. Oh, nearly forgot about the One10 I use at home and small gigs - that's brilliant for what it does and is a keeper. I've decided against trying other makes as I like the BF sounds, size & weight are over-riding factors for me - and life's too short!! -
Really enjoyed that! Great example of a bass player giving the song exactly what it needs - especially the way he picks up the brass vibe.

There's been lots of them out there - including some more obscure ones that wouldn't immediately spring to mind - like this one: The Faces - I'm Losin' You Any more for any more? I've got a few...

Alex at BF will give you proper advice re pairing with your AC50 - and doubtless let you try his demo cabs if you're anywhere near Brighton. (If you're anywhere near Taunton, you can try mine.)

Cripes - yet another Barefaced user checking in! I use a couple of Super Compact Gen 3 cabs - each is 8ohms, of compact size, weighs 11kg, will handle 600 'clean' watts, and has a single high-performance 12" driver. I also have the BF Two10 that has the 'retro' voicing - 4ohms, 14kg, up to 500w. The minimum recommended wattage for these two cabs is 150 and 100 respectively, so I'm not sure how they would work with your AC50 - although I would guess you should be fine as the amp is a valver and the drivers BF use are highly efficient. These cabs typically come up FS on here at £400-£500. BCH also a nice, as-new Aguilar cab on here at the moment - which I mention because I know him and I know it's right.

Hi Wotcher. Just a couple of observations from a s-s (30") player. Changing to a lighter-gauge set will tend to give you 'floppier' strings. It may also affect the way the strings 'speak' if the nut slots no longer hold the strings firmly. There will be less tension on the neck too, which may well reduce neck relief and cause borderline fret buzz. In all cases, the E string is likely to suffer most. Fyi, my gig bass still has its OE strings, which I measured at 038/059/074/094" (probably Fender Super Bass 5250XL with nominal gauges of 040/060/075/095"). I play in a rock-covers band tuned down to Eb and my bass sounds great - even the open E has good dynamics.

Fyi, turned out that a few top-end frets needed levelling - now done and much improved.

Sorry to hear that Frank! Nothing reported so far but I'll ask the caretaker just in case. -
SOLD!! Superb example of this blindingly good amp in perfect condition having spent its life in a Gator 2U flight case (included in sale together with foot-switch). Triple tube preamp, 560W into 8 ohms, 800W into 4 ohms. http:// I can send more pic's on request - but all you'll see is what looks like a new amp 🙂 No trades thanks.
