The Big Fat South-West Bass Bash 2019 - Sun 7 April
scrumpymike replied to scrumpymike's topic in Events
Thanks, will do. Jabba has also offered, so I'll pm him too. I was about to post my usual N-Y call for advance payments from those sure they're attending so I can pay for the hall booking in advance. As usual, I'll be happy to refund later to anyone who then can't make it due to unforeseen circumstances Any more offers will be gratefully received 👍 -
Great news Andy!

Tina Weymouth BBC bass programme in Jan

I just took it on face value - and liked it! It will be nice if some of the alternative prog's suggested on here get made too. -
Shortscale opinions please: Squier Jag SS vs Gretsch Junior Jet II
scrumpymike replied to basshead56's topic in Bass Guitars
I played the Gretsch and liked it but didn't buy. I prefer the s-s Jag sound, look and feel with its lighter, chamfered-edge body. As already mentioned though, the downside of that is a touch of neck dive - not like an SG but still noticeable. I fitted a set of Hip Shot light-weight tuners to correct that on the grounds that I can always sell them separately if I move the bass on. -

Fender seem to have kept them a closely guarded secret. Apart from the ergo's (fixed by Andy's re-body), it was the best passive bass I'd ever played. Now it's the best in every respect. But enough of my bass - back to fleabag's 😉 -
Hey Rich, were you the guy who shouted "Judas!" at that Dylan concert?? 😄

Relax Andy, they're exactly as I told you I wanted them! Although it was mainly to maximise the continuous area of that lovely wood figuring, the ergo's of the switch arrangement are perfect for me. Glad that you've found a use for the remaining walnut and look forward to seeing the result. -

If her Birthday's the day after, you've got no excuse for not coming 😉 You could always bring her with you, as a few Bashers have already done - she'll certainly get a meal that's worthy of a Birthday - including cake! -
Thanks for the heads-up Blue. As a massive Beatles fan who came to love their music even more after being lured away by Hendrix and Cream, I'm looking forward to investigating this (I meet your age criteria too 😉). As usual, I'm refraining from waxing evangelical about The Beatles on this forum because all that really matters is what they mean to me (there are probably lots more like me out there). Still loving Hendrix and Cream as much as ever btw 🙂

Posted earlier about my new Bantam. Haven't managed to 'bond' with it yet and not quite sure why. Apart from changing over to it once for a second set, I've carried on gigging my other basses. Anyway, finally got round to having a proper look at what could be amiss. Started by sorting the binding stacked pot. Problem was that when you turned the top knob more than a short distance in either direction it picked up the bottom knob and held on to it for the rest of its travel. (To be fair, Bass Direct offered to fix it after I'd mentioned it in the shop but I said I'd rather get on the road and do it myself when I got home.) Anyway, on removing the top knob, I saw that the it had been fitted with the (extremely tight) grub screw not on the flat of the spindle but on the opposite side. I re-fitted it in what I consider to be the correct position but, having only just managed to get it off without damaging the screw head, decided against trying to remove/rotate the bottom knob to make the marker dots align again. I then had a closer look at the set-up. It's pretty much as I would do it myself with two exceptions: the nut slotting is strange with unstopped string clearances at F1 of E = 031", A = 027", D = 025" and G = 012". While a bit high for me, the first three are reasonable but the 011" on the G string just seems plain wrong. Also, the G-string is a bit difficult for my tired old hands to fret cleanly above F12 - which is one of the reasons I've only gigged the bass once. The G string is high relative to the others but the bridge saddle is already virtually sitting on the deck. Seems perverse that my most expensive solid-bodied bass is the one I least want to play! Any thoughts from experienced Spector fans?

Thanks basstone, hope you can make it! -
Thanks to our wonderful FS forum, I am now the proud owner of two short-scale headless basses - an ACG Border Reiver and a Mensinger Cazpar. One came in a gig-bag and the other a semi-rigid case, but both are over-sized. I'd like something that's a snug fit, at least length-wise for transporting in our smallish car. So far I haven't found anything purpose-made on line, which is no surprise as there won't be much demand for them. Any suggestions?

Met Grant to try and then buy his mint ACG Border Reiver. Arrangements were easy and spent a very enjoyable hour talking about basses (and bikes!). Also played the Spector Shorty he has FS as I was interested to compare with my Bantam. No hesitation in recommending him to fellow Basschat members.

Good stuff Rich! -
Thanks all for the positive comments. Just realised I'll no longer be limited by the 30" scale length when it comes to choosing strings for this one - no more nut changing/re-slotting either! 🙂.
