1. Handy little rig here for someone after a classic look and sound. I've gigged both for years (usually with a multi-speaker Marshall cab) and they've never let me down. Had the amp serviced a few years back by the truly excellent (early)TE specialists EMS. They gave it the once-over, replaced the couple of noisy switches I told them about, and pronounced it A1/bomb-proof! Otherwise everything is original (including cab driver) and works as it should. Both items are in very good condition - no real damage to structure/cover materials, just what I would describe as 'roadworn lite' (no extra charge for that btw ;-) ), including some surface corrosion on the metal fittings of the cab. My attempts to get a good set of pic's this evening were thwarted by the arrival of menacing black clouds and poor light but I'll try again tomorrow. Price is collected from Taunton but can discuss other options (preferably meet buyer half-way rather than courier).
2. I'd recommend your friend takes an informed guess based on a bit of research/advice and spends say two-thirds of his budget to buy one of the excellent used head/cab offerings FS on this forum. Not much lost if he's not totally happy with it and he'll have some cash left to change something. Best bargain heads seem to be the stuff that's not necessarily flavour of the month but known to be good (e.g. a TC Elec head that's not an RH).
3. Why haven't you listed a Markbass? (I make that 1hr:08mins!)
4. I used an old Mustang (rescued from a skip!!) with flats and it sounded just sublime.
5. Can't really disagree with that. I think that I'd be going for the Mesa D800+ but IMHO their UK pricing policy fits neatly into the 'rip-off Britain' school of marketing. Not so with the Magellan 800 and it's likely that my hard-earned money will be going to that nice Mr. Genzler
6. After a lot of online research, review reading and video watching/listening for this and similar amp heads, I'm liking this one a lot! I play covers (mainly '60s thru '80s) and original material (from electric folk via folk-rock to 'world music') on a variety of basses (active, passive, electro-acoustic). My current gig-amp is a trusty TE AH300 SMC GP7, which does a pretty good job after much experimentation with control settings. I'm using a range of BF 12" and 10" cabs, which are keepers. The only pedal I own (apart from tuner and volume) is a Bass Soul Food. Anyone know of any good reason why I shouldn't go ahead with the Magellan? The dealer has a 7-day return with no questions asked policy (I would pay the return carriage), so trying it out at home will be cheaper (and much better) than a try-out in the shop.
7. Cripes - my head hurts! Just read this topic in a one-er while studying the combined Basschat 'knowledge' to help me find something modern/compact that floats my boat as much (though not necessarily in the same way) as the TE AH300 SMC GP7 I've been gigging for years. In another thread, I came across mcnach waxing lyrical about his D800+ - which is now on my shortlist (along with the Streamliner and Fusion for core sounds and RH750 for functionality). Oh, and maybe WoT's HandBox as well (should be able to play nicely with my Polish bass )! At risk of introducing another, off-topic, variable, the fact that mcnach is running his D800+ thru my beloved BF Two 10 cab's is of special interest to me.
8. Thanks for your comments everybody. Yesterday I got the SWB-1 out for the first time since I changed my amps & cabs. All I can say is that if somebody buys the Rascal or Hohner Jack I've also got FS, I'll be pulling this one double-quick. Not only is it such an easy player, but it has a great core tone. Scott W told me a sound engineer reckoned that his SWB-1 was one of the best basses he'd ever recorded.
9. I currently play in 2 bands - one all covers, the other all originals, as I have done at various times over the years. In my experience you definitely need a very charismatic lead vocalist/front line to carry your audience thru unfamiliar material, however good it is - just playing it well isn't enough. If you only have a few original songs in your set, that won't be a problem.
10. Thanks for all comments - looks positive so.
11. That is GORGEOUS - and even more desirable to an existing Marus' player like me - but I only play short-scale nowadays GLWTS - and congratulations to the new owner!
12. I wondered that too - and decided there isn't. Thought long and hard about making an adjustable prototype that would fit the SWB-1, SG and similar. Trouble is you'd need to simplify/minimalise the design for production, which would call up complex shapes that are beyond the scope of a hobbyist like me. The alternatives then would either be to get tooled up or sub-contract stuff out - and the size of the market/expected price point wouldn't justify it. So this really is a one-off - but thanks for asking
13. Thanks Mel and sorry we couldn't sort things for you
14. One of my bands is folk-ish/folk-rock/world original material (7-piece btw so not 'chamber music!) and I'm getting an electro-acoustic bass for use on some of our numbers. I've bought a pedal to switch between that and my solid electric and am looking at an RH750 because 1) it will allow me to switch between different memorised settings for each bass and 2) it should work well in my covers band too. Anybody had experience of using an RH750 (or anything else) in this way?
15.
Has anyone tried one of these? http://bassdirect.co...Ass_straps.html I'm after the most padded strap I can get (within reason). Already have a Mono, and a Neotech - both work on my other basses, but my old Ricky is a bit of a boat anchor, and very tough on long gigs and rehearsals. Saw these, and thought they look of good quality, especially given in how high regard their instruments are. Ideas?
I've got Maru's - wide and extra-wide. With my heaviest bass I find the extra-wide as comfy as my ridiculously expensive Gibson strap that has even more padding. The normal wide is just as comfy with my lighter basses. Re colour-fastness, can't comment as mine aren't black and I'm not much of a sweater
16. PS Just spotted that bass in case shot was taken while gizmo was away for powder coating - it still fits perfectly with gizmo attached.
17. Looking for a beautiful and unique bass that's compact, light-weight, perfectly balance and super-easy to play? This mint SWB-1 with flamed maple top and matching headstock was a special, extra-cost order to match the one-off bass that Scott himself was playing at the time. I had it professionally set up with my preferred D'Addario EXL220S 040-095 nickel rounds and my luthier made a new 'antique bone' nut to suit. The other special thing about this bass is the one-off 'gizmo' I designed to fix the awkward positioning/balance on the strap by shifting the top button to the f12 'sweet-spot'. This works a treat, is made from light-weight aluminium and looks like a professional job with its black powder-coated finish. (I put a lot of thought and time in to designing something that's quickly removable, won't mark the body and requires negligible modification to the bass itself. The top fixing is the original strap button screw/hole so the only addition is a small screw hole in the back.) The only reason I'm selling is that I decided to buy a Maruszczyk soon after and the SWB-1 hasn't seen any action since. Please note that I've priced it to reflect the work done because I want it to go to someone who needs and values the mod's. Both bass and case are as new. 18. Useful info Phil - that's a pretty heavyweight cv! Shame he's not a bit nearer to me; my local luthier was a 20-minute drive up the road but tragically passed away last year. Suppose I could always persuade Mrs Scrumpy that we need a holiday in Brighton . What are his charges like for fettling/set-up work?
19. Hmmmm... definitely a bit 'loose' - still good though
