I only play if I'm at band practice / gigging / jam night. I very rarely pick up the bass at home. I used to, before I started jamming with others / gigging.
Ditto.
Life is to short, and I never wanted to spend it working for "the man".
That's one approach. Another is to choose which 'man' to work for so you can make enough to retire early and then do whatever you like, when you like. If you're dependent on someone giving you money, then you're still 'working for the man'. -

Trigger's Amp? -
To be honest, there's not much point discussing 'perceived' volumes of different amps based on one listener. Not that I'm questioning the sincerity of the OP, but a different person might well assess the volumes of the amps differently, for all manner of reasons. There is so much psychology involved that such individual assessments are about as worthwhile as those hi-if reviews where the reviewer can allegedly hear the difference between a gold plated fuse in the mains plug and a standard (ugh!) one. If we really want to have a meaningful discussion then we really need some better data. A double-blind listening test with many people would be a minimum place to start. Of course, if the OP thinks a particular Amp sounds loudest then that should be good enough for them, but I just think we should keep such findings in perspective and not draw unwarranted wider conclusions

What do you favour -straight plug or angled plugs

Playing in an original band has opened my eyes

+1 We play mainly originals but also play some covers, which we play in 'our style' so they are not slavish copies of the original or we'll play a less well known version of a well known song, though also usually in 'our style'. For example JJ Cale's original version of 'Breeze' instead of the better known Lynyrd Skynryd version. We also have a bit of fun with Route 66 by basing it on the original version (though we don't have keys): http://youtu.be/kLUYf6cekMA -
"Buy cheap, buy twice" as my old gaffer used to say.
Yep. Or as Ruskin is widely attributed as saying somewhat more long-windedly: “There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
Why don't you want to turn it up more than halfway?
Yep, that would be my first question. It sounds like the easiest, simplest and safest solution for a bit more volume.

Bad drummers - how do you deal with it?
4stringslow replied to project_c's topic in General Discussion
I've played with loads of drummers who play their best fill at the end of every 8 bars, only to rush/wreck the tempo & confuse singers/ horns or whoever. Or guys not knowing or articulating the structure of a tune Playing with a good drummer is truly a beautiful thing!
I'd call this a lack of musicality - the ability to hold a beat but a complete lack of awareness of the song structure, no appreciation of dynamics, playing fills at inappropriate or apparently random places etc, almost as if they just 'zone out' and go into some form of autopilot. In short, not serving the song. I put it down to boredom. Just keeping a solid, steady beat with no frills is sometimes all that's needed, yet many drummers seem unable to do this and insist on ever more raucous fills as if it's a good thing - thrash it and bash it! Arrgh! -
This whole episode throws into doubt the effectiveness of “buying local”. I can’t really see the point of making the effort to visit a shop to make a face-to-face purchase if you have to eventually go to an online retailer to get things fixed. I realise that this is probably not a typical occurrence and there are many shops that provide excellent after-sales service.
I don't think customer service is relative to local shops or online in any way. Either can be good or bad. Nice story though, and shows that excellent service is out there somewhere.

This^ Just to add that I have a BH250 and frequently use it with a single RS212 cab (8 ohms) with no problems at all. As the BH250 is a 4ohm amp, it won't deliver its full power into a single 8 ohm cab. When I need some extra oomph I also connect an RS210 (8ohm) cab, which gives a 4ohm load and full power from the amp.
I remember when The Beatles brought out that Free As A Bird, 20 odd years after they split Expectations were high, but it was not well recieved.
Probably because it was the right decision not to release it at the time. Most bands have loads of songs that don't quite cut it and so, quite rightly, don't release them. If they become hugely popular the demand for new songs remains even after they split up, so record companies trawl their archives and end up releasing new but ever poorer songs, which the fans lap up because . . . . well, because they're fans.

In the 70s there was so little choice, now there is loads and people are choosing accordingly. Simple. I doubt it's an age thing - have bass-player demographics really changed that much? Interesting that this topic should be running concurrently with the 'Justification' topic, where the consensus seems to be 'because I want to'. -
I bought a Cymatic LR-16 multitrack recorder and cables from Harry. Good communication, pretty much 'as new' in original packaging and better wrapped than most commercial parcels I receive from companies. An exemplary transaction! Thanks Harry.

Bass Player Competence Study - for my PhD research
4stringslow replied to EvilSmile's topic in General Discussion
Your survey language is tutored/schooled, so might exclude many players who don't fall into that category, such as myself. Some of the most competent and musical players I know are unschooled, whilst many of the schooled players I know are less competent and relatively unmusical. Many unschooled bassists can perform some or all of the techniques listed with competence, but without knowing the labels you use, whilst schooled players might know the terms but be less competent.
I once got myself into a lot of trouble by saying much the same thing to some young musicians proclaiming that their various 'grade' qualifications made them musical experts despite their demonstrable inability to jam along with a bunch of their unschooled mates. -
as for using another DAW, i had a cursory glance at reaper but i get really annoyed with demo versions. its bad enough with the sonar thing and figuring ways around what is usable or not.
Reaper offers a 'demo licence' (i.e. free for 60 days) but it is fully functional and not limited in any way as far as I know. They state on their website "There is only one version of REAPER. The license price depends on how you use it.", i.e. for personal or commercial use. At £60 for personal use it seems like a bargain to me.

Sounds like a simple case of the two parties having slightly different expectations. The arrangement needs to be properly discussed before too much bad feeling sets in. If the band really doesn't want to help the sound guy set everything up and take everything down then just tell him exactly what you expect him to do. He can then decide whether to provide that service or not, charge a bit more for his extra work, hire his own helper, whatever! But at least both sides will then know exactly what is expected of them. Of course, this might lead to a parting of the ways, but it sounds like it might be heading that way anyway given the current tensions on both sides.
