  1. Jeez, you really nailed the member profile description didn't you?
  2. I play both fingers and pick. I find it easier to maintain fast equal notes with a pick, but for complex rhythms fingers are better.
  3. At the risk of raising the old argument, they sound good on a precision.
  4. Ah, you utter b*****d. I'd almost completely blanked out The Power of Love from my memory until I read this.
  5. Almost everything the dull lifeless vocalist with a backing tape managed to kill in my local last night. Absolutely horendous versions of songs that wern't my cup of tea to begin with.
  6. The singer/guitarist in my band leant his PRS against the back of the car while trying to get his stuff out of the garage. It turned out the car was too close to the garage door so he got in and, you guessed it, reversed over the guitar,. It snapped the glued in neck in half. As it turned out his insurance paid him a nice chunk of money, and the lead guitarist who is a bit of a luthier managed to repair the guitar. Its posssible to see a small crack in the neck but you wouldn't otherwise know. Theres still a tyre mark on teh PRS soft case. The singer is now the proud owner of the repaired PRS and a rather nice Telecaster that he bought with the insurance money.
  7. I have the same thoughts about Coldplay and Bryan Adams
  8. I particularly dislike playing Are you Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz - the song structure is basically dull, dull, dull, freeform, dull. On a similar note Alright Now. Structure Nothing, nothing, do a bit, nothing, do a bit.
  9. In a rather Donald Rumsfeld kind of way, theres about 50 songs I know I know, about 50 I think I know , possibly another 50 that I don't know that I know, and a huge list of things I know I dont know. Put anoyther way Things I currently or recently played, things I used to play regularly (which I think I know but probably don't if I try to play them in a band), and things I have played cos I fancied learning them but have forgotten that I did.
  10. WTF? A waste of great chicken.
  11. Proguard mould you own ould allow you to make the inner ear part really short, although this would make them less effective it would be better than nothing. Alternatively speak to one of their affiliated audiologists who should be able to work up a solution (at a price)
  12. I suggest you get yourself a KFC bargain bucket and after eating the lot neglect to use the lemony clean up wipe before playing the new bass. That should fill all the gaps in the windings nicely.
  13. Generally have a beer or two on stage. Our last gig was at a bar with a huge number of TV screens and I was caught watching the cricket at one point - in my defence it might have been during Sex on Fire.
  14. To be fair, the Gibbo is set neck not bolt on, and it comes with two pickups. The aluminium Roswell is the one to have too..
  15. As far as I can figure out the Gibson guitar brand is not the issue here, and why should it be? They are managing to sell poorly manufactured instruments at a premium price. The issue is that the "Gibson family of brands" includes non core businessess and the aquisitions have cost them dear. Why would a corporationn which sells itself as a craft luthier brand purchase Phillips consumer electronics (AV and multimedia). I can just about see the TEAC consumer brand fitting due to the Tascam subsiduary.but turning u at electronics shows and not at NAMM seems to dilute the brand.
  16. Is it the sound or the feel? Obviously a PB has a different neck profile and width to a jazz. I had to force myself to adjust because I wanted the sound.
  17. 1. You are right on the pronunciation, maybe the people you know are from Batt-er-see-uh (Battersea) Balm (Balham) or something? 2. Epiphones are not fake Gibsons, and until Gibson bought the name were a well respected brand in their own right. They still do some Epi only models (Sheraton, Casino etc). 3. My Epi branded 339 semi is bueatiful and sound great.
  18. The only guitar visible to visitors is my acoustic. They are generally quite impressed by a rendition of Dee (Ozzy) or Spanish Romance, less so by something more rocky. To me bass isn't about the notes, its about the vibe and without a drummer its just noise.
  19. My American special precision has a 1-5/8 (41.3mm) slim C neck, and my Squier CV 70s has a 1.65 (41.9mm) modern C. I struggle with a Jazz neck width as it seems a bit cramped, but dislike the really chunky neck profile on some of the PBs. I hadn't considered whether its because of the nut width, or whether the nut width also adds extra meat to to profile, but I suspect it does because I've tried some modern C profiles that feel too big..
  20. I know I'm being not only deaf to the sound but also completely thick but on a fretted bass as opposed to a fretless the string vibrates between the fret (or nut) and the bridge. How is the material of the fretboard relevant? I can completely understand the difference a tonewood makes on the body, and how the construction overall impacts the sound but not the fretboard.
  21. When I first joined a band as a bassist I did it because I was living in a portacabin in the middle of a desert a few thousand miles from home and there was absolutely nothing to do. We used to do a three hour practice once a week when everyone was available, but I'd have been happy rehearsing every night. The band played about 5 gigs in the 18 months I was there. I hated most of the songs we played, and t was all unpaid, although the drinks were free. Its the only thing that kept me sane.
  22. I'm assuming you are doing small sale mnufacture of bespoke instruments shipped individually? I completely understand this sort of regulation puts you at a disabvantage compared to large scale producers. It will be interesting to see whether things like Fender custom shop will withdraw the option of rosewood for the same reason,
  23. I'm not quite clear on the rules, but as far as I can gather its OK to use sustainably sourced materials. To be honest, adding £74 to the cost of a shipment simply mean that the import of individual instruments will cease and import of larger shipments will continue. I think the OP is correct that the tonal differences for fretboards is minute, and its reall a case of tradition and cosmetics. I have a number of guitars with maple boards and a couple with rosewood. It doesn't bother me one way or the other. My telecaster is maple and woud probably look better with rosewood but when I play it it doesn;t really impact the feel of the guitar. On the other hand just how wrong would my ES339 look with maple?
